WMHS AFTERSCHOOL OFFERINGS

Session I: September 18-December 1, 2023 (unless otherwise indicated)  


There is no charge to participate in 21C afterschool programs.

This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

While this is not a first come first served program, we need forms to be returned right away as programs fill up quickly. To sign up for an afterschool class:

Please check each class for start and end dates as it varies from class to class.

Each student is offered a healthy meal. Please stay home if you are sick.

WMHS students attending 21C classes will exit the school building through the middle/high school doors unless they need to pick up a sibling from afterschool at JFK.

MS Neighborhood Indoor Games for 5th-8th graders with Ms. Shumski in the library

begins 9/18 ends 11/27

Join other MS students in our new library to play card and board games. Challenge yourself and learn how to play some new games! We will even have Chess available, which has been a big hit at our MS.

If your favorite game is not there….let us know so we can work on building our supply of games! MS Poetry for 5th-8th graders with Ms. Nixandy, HS student leader and Ms. Poleman in A139

begins 10/2 ends 11/27                                                                                                                                   Writing Poetry with Nixandy is a space where you are able to write down your emotions and express them. All you need for this class is a pencil, journal and your feelings. Composition books and pencils will be provided.

MS ELA support with Ms. Thomassen-Tai in A116 begins 9/18 ends 11/27

Need some extra support with reading, writing, or staying caught up with ELA/Humanities work? Come to A116 to work alone, with a small group, or with Ms. Tai to improve your reading and writing, and be ready for class. Bring an essay to edit, reading you may need support with, or ELA assignments you haven't finished yet! This class focuses on the Communication GX in the area of Writing and Critical Reading.

Youth Skateboarding @ Talent Skatepark for ages 8-13 begins 10/23 ends 12/18

Shred it Up with your friends at Talent Skatepark! This program is open to all levels of

Skateboarders-from first time skaters learning the basics to experienced pros practicing tricks. Transportation is provided-pick up and drop off a the Winooski School District JFK Playground

WMHS Weight Training with Ms. Messier and Mr. Coutts in the weight room begins 10/2 ends 11/27

Middle and high school students are invited to join us in the weight room to experience the satisfaction of improving your body's strength and endurance by weight training. You are free to perform your own work out, or we can help you get started. This class focuses on the Well-Being GX in the area of Physical and Social-Emotional Health.

HS Core Support with Ms. Poquette in A216 begins 9/18 ends 11/27                                                                                                   

The primary focus of this support will be to help students with financial questions and assignments, but the space is welcome for any high school student looking for a quiet place to focus on assignments. This class focuses on the Critical Thinking GX in the area of Financial Literacy.

WMHS Instrumental Support with Mr. Argraves in C160 begins 9/18 ends 11/27

Do you play a band or orchestra instrument but do not have the time to practice at home? Or, do you simply want some extra help with a piece of music? If you answer yes to either question, then stop by on Thursdays to work with Mr. Argraves. This class can help support growth in the Creativity GX, which is vital to developing musical and technical skills.  

Safe-Sitter course in A202 begins 10/2 ends 11/13 (no class 10/9)  Meets until 4:30. Are you a teen interested in gaining a new skill set that could lead to helping out families in your community and earning some money? Join Community Services Admin and Outreach Assistant, Zahra Mohamed, in this 6 week babysitting training course to obtain your Safe Sitter Certification as well as an introduction to First Aid/CPR this fall. This is an amazing opportunity to bulk up your resume!

HERO Program ( 9th-12th) Complete application by Sept 21st!                                               The goal of the program is to support science achievement and postsecondary pathway planning for Vermont teens. HERO, which stands for Health Exploration Resources and Opportunities, is a no cost, four month, 1-to-1 online mentoring program that pairs high school students with volunteer medical students trained in mentoring and STEM education. Students engage with their mentors in ten learning modules: one focused on health career exploration, one focused on goal setting, and eight modules focused on human biology, health science, and medicine. These sessions are scheduled by the participant and their mentor once per week from October to January.

HERO Mentoring Program Application (jotform.com).  Space is limited in the HERO Mentoring Program.  Selection will be based on participants’ demonstrated interest in health and medicine and ability to commit to the full duration of the program. There are no academic prerequisites, and no prior knowledge or experience is required.

HS Student Leader Job Description (11th and 12th graders) Youth-developed and youth-led projects provide opportunities for academic growth, hands-on learning and personal development. HS students provide meaningful service to the school and surrounding community to achieve their learning goals and develop their academic and transferable skills. Students explore their own passions and interests supported by an adult mentor. MS Linking Engineering to Life for 5th-8th graders with Ms. Krol and UVM Student Mentors from the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences in A113 begins 9/26 ends 11/28 Class meets until 4:30

Are you interested in making cool things? Join Linking Engineering to Life to do hands-on engineering challenges with college students. This will be a place for girls and non-binary individuals to explore STEM and work together to design and create! This class focuses on the Critical Thinking GX in the area of Math Reasoning.

Teen Cuisine for 5th-8th graders with Ms. Puttlitz and Ms. Pinard in A218 (WMH Health Rm)

begins 10/3 ends 11/14  Class meets until 4:15.

Do you want to make your own salsa? Or learn how to make easy fried rice? Then come cook with us!   Teen Cuisine uses fun and interactive strategies to teach you key concepts about food preparation and cooking, food safety, nutrition and physical activity. This program will empower you to work independently in the kitchen and cook delicious and nutritious snacks and meals, and to develop skills to help choose healthy eating habits.This class focuses on the Wellbeing GX in the area of Social-Emotional Health.                

WMHS Anything Goes with Ms. Maeve in A139 begins 9/19 ends 11/28

Come for homework support, classwork questions and review, or enrichment and challenge! We will focus on math but learning in all subjects is more than welcome….Anything Goes! Feel free to drop in, but make sure you are there to learn :) This class focuses on the Persistence GX in the area of Math Reasoning.

WMHS Music Support with Ms. Kelemen in A149 begins 9/19 ends 11/28

This session is open to anyone who would like to practice piano, singing, making beats, writing your own music, recording music, and more! This class supports growth in the Creativity GX for the Performing Arts.

WHS Math Support with Ms. Lawson in Rm A156 begins 10/17

Ms. Lawson looks forward to working with you afterschool to answer any HS math questions.

MS Rosie’s Girls for 5th-8th graders in partnership with Vermont Works for Women in the MS Art Room begins 10/11 ends 11/29               This class meets until 4:30.                      

Learn how to use TOOLS, BUILD fun GROUP PROJECTS, and CREATE LASTING FRIENDSHIPS at Rosie’s Girls Afterschool! Rosie’s Girls combines hands-on learning in trades skills with opportunities to learn more about yourself and make new friends. This year, we’re building projects that will be gifted back to the MS! We practice how to grow your self-confidence, curiosity, and take healthy risks in an

inclusive environment. All necessary tools and equipment included. No experience necessary. We strive to accommodate youth of all abilities. * Rosie's Girls welcomes into our program anyone who identifies as a girl regardless of assignment at birth. Our programs also welcome youth who are non-binary or gender expansive who are comfortable in a girl-centered space.

WMHS PeaceJam with Ms. Aftaba, Ms. Melissa and Ms. Maeve in A156 begins 9/20 ends 11/29

Come and engage in activism that spreads good and makes change in our local Winooski community and beyond! Peace Jam is a club that hosts winter clothing drives, cooks and shares meals, and supports friends and neighbors. We can use all the creative ideas and big hearts that we can get! Please come and learn more :) This class can help support growth in the Culture and Community GX in the area of Cross-Cultural Engagement.  

HS Career Discovery Club with Jess Handrik in the library begins 9/20 ends 11/29

Are you looking for a job? Do you need to create a resume? Do you know what talents and skills you will bring to a new employer?  Do you need to practice your job interview skills? Would you like to visit employers and businesses in Winooski to explore the careers available in our city?  What is your dream career? If you answered “Yes” or “I Don't Know”, to any of the questions above, Career Discovery Club is for you!  Join Ms. Jess in the library afterschool on Wednesdays to discover your future career and current job possibilities AND identify the talents and skills you have to offer the world of work. We'll role-play, make resumes, conduct online career research, complete career interest quizzes, practice job interview skills through role-play and get out into the city to see what Winooski has to offer. We'll have fun while we learn about ourselves and our city. High School Cooking Lab for 9th and 10th graders with Ms. Putlittz in A218

Description: Do you want to learn how to cook? In this cooking lab, you will become empowered to use kitchen equipment and cooking tools safely to make your own meals. You will learn the importance of “mis en place”, proper knife skills and the culinary techniques necessary to follow a recipe successfully. And the best part–you will get to eat delicious food! Please note that this class ends at 4:15pm so you can fully clean up your working space. Students can sign up for one cooking class per month: October 18 or 25, Nov 15th or Nov 29th and Dec 13th or Dec 20th. Please email Ms. Suzanne at: sskaflestad@wsdvt.org

Youth Climbing offered by City of Winooski in partnership with 21C

Join the City of Winooski for youth rock climbing! Youth will work with coaches to learn the basics of climbing techniques, get comfortable with safe belaying, and build their confidence. All gear is provided.         Registration is online at winooskivt.gov/recprograms

SCHOOL DAY Pride Clubs welcome members of the LGBTQA+ community and allies/friends of this community. What is an Ally?  Anyone, regardless of their orientation or how they identify who supports/advocates for the LGBTQIA+ community.  

High School PRIDE Club meets every Thursday during Advisory in 208 and Middle School PRIDE Club will begin meeting 11/30 during lunch (room TBD)

Winooski Above the Influence (ATI) for 5th-12th graders (in partnership with The Winooski Partnership for Prevention) in A114 at the MS begins 9/21 ends 11/30

In this class students will join MS students to develop their leadership skills and participate in making community changes. They will learn about the health impacts of substances and how substances are marketed. The following activities will be offered, but not required, based on students’ interests: weekly meetings, walking field trips, participation in city government, including the process of policy change, and creation of media. This class focuses on the WellBeing GX in the area of Social-Emotional Health.

HS DREAM M2 Mentoring Program at JFK continues with the JFK mentees and WHS mentors from last year. The first meeting day for returning mentees and mentors will be Thursday, Sept 21st in A154.

DREAM is looking for 5 NEW HS MENTORS currently in 10th or 11th grade to work with 5 NEW MENTEES. The training for new mentors begins in September and the first meeting with your mentee would be in November. The DREAM Program is a volunteer mentoring program that pairs high school students with elementary school students to form a strong mentoring relationship. Most of our meetings happen at the school with occasional field trips. Please let us know on the registration form on the next page if you are  interested in being trained to be a HS mentor. Or, you can email Ms. Suzanne at sskaflestad@wsdvt.org.  These leadership opportunities help build your resume, confidence and transferable skills.
