November 8, 1938 - April 6, 2019
Edith S. Reed, 80, of Bloomington, Idiana, passed away at IU Health Hospice House on April 6, 2019 with family by her side. Born November 8, 1938, in Columbus, Ohio, where she lived nearly her whole life, Edie was preceded in death by her parents Hazel and Ephraim Smith, half-siblings Dorothy, Harold, Don, and Opal, and cousin Sylvia. She is survived by her sons Andy, now in Canada, Timothy and Daniel (Christy True) of Bloomington, grandchildren Zoe and Adrian Reed and Jessica and Connor True.
Graduate of Linden McKinley High School, Edie earned BA and MSW degrees from Ohio State University. As a young adult, Edie taught and played violin, viola and French horn for various ensembles, including the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, volunteered for many causes including La Leche League and civil rights, and ran Happy Hollow Day Camp with Ronald D. Reed, to whom she was married from 1959-1972. As a single mother, Edie worked for nearly four decades as a social worker, in private practice, for Franklin County Children's Services, and Family Counseling and Crittenden Services. A seeker of spirit, Edie was a long-time member of Unitarian Universalist and Unity Churches in Columbus, OH.
Edie was the most loving and supportive mother imaginable. She instilled in her sons many passions including music, spirituality, love of nature and animals. Edie also nurtured her extended family, her devoted friends, her many cats and dogs, and wild animals, especially birds, who frequented her feeders like she frequented ice cream. Memorial service to be announced.
