In the Beginning

A 3,000-year-old Egyptian scarab used as an ancient seal was recently discovered at the excavation sites in ancient Shiloh in the Binyamin region. Previously, an altar beam dating to the Iron Age was found in Shiloh. This findings among many others relates to the biblical testimony of Bne Yisarel who settled in the area after the Exodus from Egypt.

Shiloh - שִׁלוֹ ,שִׁילֹה ,שִׁלֹה, and שִׁילוֹ variably - was an ancient city in the Shomron. It has been positively identified with modern Khirbet Seilun, a tell or archaeological mound, called Tel Shiloh. It is located near the modern town of Shilo, a home to 4,500 Israelis.

Rav Question -

Which is harder to switch: a political party or a favorite sports team?

A Moment of BAN

“In Israel, in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles.”

- David Ben-Gurion

During The 3 Weeks

It is customary to abstain from reciting the “Shehecheyanu” blessing during the three weeks between the Seventeenth of Tammuz and the Ninth of Av on a new fruit or a new garment. One should leave the new fruit or garment for after Tisha Be’av rather than to eat the fruit or wear the garment without reciting “Shehecheyanu.”

The source for this custom can be found in the Sefer Chassidim who writes that they would not eat a new fruit during the “Three Weeks,” for how can one recite the blessing of “Who has given us life, sustained us, and allowed us to reach this time,” during such a tragic period? Maran Ha’Shulchan Aruch likewise writes that it is preferable to abstain from reciting the “Shehecheyanu” blessing on a new fruit or garment during the “Three Weeks.” Rabbeinu Ha’Ari z”l rules likewise, as do the consensus of the Acharonim. (Chazon Ovadia-Arba Ta’aniyot, page 129)

One may purchase new clothing during the “Three Weeks” until Rosh Chodesh Av; nevertheless, customarily the garments will not be worn until after Tisha Be’av.

On Shabbatot that fall out during the “Three Weeks,” it is customary to recite “Shehecheyanu” on a new fruit or garment.

A pregnant woman who sees a new fruit during the “Three Weeks” and craves it, customarily may recite “Shehecheyanu” and eat this fruit during this time. (halachayomit.co.il -)

Daf Bite  –

Massekhet Temura: Introduction to the Tractate

Massekhet Temura deals with all aspects of substitution of sacrifices, of which the central aspect is the prohibition against attempting to remove the sanctity of a sacrificial animal by exchanging it with an ordinary animal that will be sacrificed in its place. All these laws are derived from two short passages in Sefer Vayikra (27:10), which state that someone who tries to exchange a sanctified animal will result in both animals becoming sanctified.

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Parasha: Pinḥas - Bamidbar (Numbers) 25:10-30:1

Historical Context: Creation Time: 2487 (1437 bce).

Bnei Israel's 40-year journey is close to an end as they encamped in the plains of Moab, across the Jordan from Jericho.

Parashort: Aharon's grandson, Pinḥas, is rewarded for his act of zealotry in killing the Shimonite prince Zimri and the Midianite princess: G-d grants him a covenant of peace and the priesthood. A census of the people counts 601,730 men between the ages of 20 and 60. Moses is instructed on how the Land is to be divided by lottery among the tribes and families of Israel. The five daughters of Tslofḥad petition Moshe that they be granted the portion of the land belonging to their father, who died without sons; G-d accepts their claim and incorporates it into the Torah's laws of inheritance. Moshe empowers Yehoshua to succeed him and lead Bnei Israel into the Promised Land. A detailed list is given of the daily offerings, and the additional offerings brought on shabbat, rosh ḥodesh, and holidays. (chabad)

Haftara: 3 Weeks (1) - Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah) 1:1-2:3

Haftara in Short: Introduction of the prophet Yirmiyahu the son of Ḥilkiyahu, a Cohen that lived in the priestly city of Anatot, in the region of Binyamin (north of Jerusalem). Yirmiyahu had a prophetic experience during the reigns of the Judah kings: Yoshiyahu ben Amon and Yehoyakim ben Yoshiyahu. While still in his mother’s womb, Yirmiyahu was approached by G-d and told that “from the time he leaves his mothers womb, he will be a prophet of the people”. Yirmiyahu declined the position and G-d told Yirmiyahu that he would let the necessary words flow from his mouth. G-d spoke to Yirmiyahu in a vision and asked him “What do you see?” Yirmiyahu replied “I see an almond tree’s branch”. This prophecy was symbolic of the rapid surrounding and destroying of the first Temple. G-d spoke to Yirmiyahu again, asking Yirmiyahu what he sees. Yirmiyahu replied that “he sees a boiling pot with its contents spoiling over from south to north”. This vision was symbolic of the outpouring of the enemy nation of Babylon. This is the prediction that the Babylonians will overcome the Jews in their own land. G-d gives Yirmiyahu an encouragement not to be afraid of the visions. Yirmiyahu’s first message to the Jewish people is to do teshuvah, repentance. (haftoraman)

Connection to the Parasha: The Haftara is the first of three Haftarot that we read before Tisha Be’av. They are about the Temple's destruction and the exile of the Jewish people.

Biblical Quiz: Pinḥas

Kids: How many daughters did Tslofḥad have?

Teenagers: What are their names?

Adults: Were the Levites counted the same as the other tribes?

Experts: How many more women are mentioned in our parasha? What are their names?

Rabbis: What did Moshe ask when G-d told him that he would only get to see the Promised Land?

Speechless in the Parasha: Pinḥas

How many daughters did Tsəlofḥad have? Look at their names: Can you find a common thread? What is it? Do you know anyone with this name?

A Parasha Bite - Pinḥas

This shabbat’s parasha, Pinḥas, accounts for 4 types of leadership. First is Zimri ben Salu, a president in the tribe of Shim’on who publicly participates in a promiscuous activity with the daughters of Moav. Second is Pinḥas ben Ela’azar Hakohen who acts zealously and takes the law into his hands in killing Zimri. On him the sages said “halakha, but we don’t instruct as such.”  Third is Moshe ben Amram who shows responsibility nominating Joshua as his successor and does not leave a leadership void. Last are the 5 Daughters of Telofhad who had no brother to carry on their father’s land and name, and therefore take the initiative and raise the voice of women in a patriarchal society, ask for and achieve justice and the continuation of the name their father’s household. Hazak U’varukh!  tbs.

Riddle Solved 1

The first man to walk on the moon was Neil Armstrong followed by Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, on July 20, 1969, during the Apollo 11 mission.

Total 12 astronauts, all Americans, walked on the Moon, all as part of the Apollo program, between July 1969 and December 1972.

The 5 Psalms words inscripted on a pinhead in both Hebrew and English are: “ וְרֹב שָׁלוֹם עַד בְּלִי יָרֵחַ - and may it be abundance of peace, till the moon is no more (meaning, forever).

The full verse is:

In his days may the righteous flourish, and may be an abundance of peace, till the moon is no more (= forever). (Psalms 72:7)

Riddle Solved 2

- Yitshak Shamir, Israel’s 7th prime minister, served for 2432 days, which is 6 years and 242 days. Shamir is the 3rd longest serving Israeli PM after David Ben-Gurion, who served cumulatively 4875 days which is 13 years ad 128 days, and Binyamin Netanyahu who took the lead from Ben-Gurion last Shabbat 19 July.

- In the current OECD countries, Netanyahu holds the 3rd place of cumulatively longest term in office, after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who assumed office in 14 March 2003, over 16 years in power, and of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who assumed office in 22 November 2005, almost 14 years in office.

- USA’s 32nd president Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) served for 4,422 days from 4 March 1933 until 12 April 1945, serving over 12 years, slightly into his 4th term.

- Manashe the 7th century BCE king of the Kingdom of Judah was the longest reigning king in either Judea and Israel. Menashe became king at the age of 12 and reigned for 55 years

- The longest reigning modern monarch, still in office, is Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom who assumed office in 6 February 1952, and has been serving over 67 years. We wish her until 120!
