Outfitting & protecting your e-bike
Checklist for useful accessories when getting a new e-bike
When you buy a car, many extra items are included that are important for safety (like lights and seat belts), security (locks and keys), functionality (trunk for carrying things), and repairs (spare tire, jack, and wrench). When you purchase a bicycle some of these are not included and must be purchased separately. Consider the useful items below when you buy your bike.
- Visibility . The following are recommended to keep you visible and secure on the road
- Lights - A front white light is legally required and a rear red light is recommended
- Helmet - MIPS style is recommended.
- Bright yellow jacket or vest
- Bell
- Pant clips - if the bike does not have a chain guard
- Security - Bikes are attractive to thieves. Get a tough lock and learn how to use it well to lock at least both wheels and your helmet. Lock it securely at home and work, not just when you are out in the world.
- Lock - You get what you pay for. Get the highest quality lock you can afford. Heavy duty, keyed U bolt or chain is best. Avoid combination locks or cable locks.. Look for “Sold Secure Gold” or “ART 3 stars” or higher ratings if possible.
- Wheel & seat security - Options include cables:(to thread through the wheels and helmet and lock with the main lock), security skewers & pin lock bolts that require a special tool to remove, and a small seatpost lock & cable
- Lockable battery
- GPS Tracker
- Carrying capacity - Consider what you want to be able to carry with you on your bike
- Cargo Rack - including seats or seat pads & rails if for a cargo bike carrying kids
- Panniers - there are waterproof versions if you are planning to ride year round through rain. Consider fenders too.
- Front basket
- Tools: If you live far from a bike shop or just like doing your own minor maintenance at home, you might want to consider tools for maintaining tire pressure, fixing flats and tightening bolts and keeping your chain running easily.
- Pump & Pressure gauge
- Patch kit &/or a spare tube & tire irons/levers:
- Wrench &/or Hex key set for axles, seat post and other bolts on the bike
- Chain lubricant
- Chain wear tool
- Warranty & Maintenance plans: Ask your dealer about what is covered under their warranty. Find out if they offer a prepaid maintenance plan and consider if that is right for you. Some dealers offer special deals in these with the purchase of a bike.
- Insurance: Consult with your insurance agent to insure that your bike is covered under your homeowners or renters policy or consider a dedicated policy.
