What about COVID-19?

While we are so excited to return to camp in 2021 and know our participants will need unplugged time spent in community with their peers this year more than ever, we also know and expect COVID-19 will still be a present concern.

The health and safety of our campers and staff is, as always, a top priority.  We have been and will continue to closely follow updated information and guidance from the American Camp Association and CDC, along with the requirements and recommendations for camp operations during COVID-19 from the Minnesota Department of Health, and have planned adjustments to our programs, practices, and policies in summer 2021 accordingly.

While we cannot 100% eliminate the risk of COVID-19 at camp, given what we have learned in the past year both about the virus and from camps that safely and successfully opened in 2020, along with our unique setting with abundant space to spread out outdoors and years of experience focusing on the health and safety of all our participants, we feel confident we can greatly reduce the risk and provide a safe (and fun!) experience for our campers.    

Given the current expert guidance (as of the update date in the top right corner) we are planning for the following to be in effect this summer:

Given the fluid nature of the situation, registered families can expect there may continue to be updates to some of this information, the information you have been sent about preparing for camp and traveling to camp and potentially to the forms and information we need from you as well. (As of the 5/20 or 5/21 updates to this document, and the Preparing for Camp Guide and Travel Guide sent to registered participants in your confirmation email, we expect to have updates only if clarification is needed, other entities such as airlines change policies or procedures, or state or federal health authorities make significant changes to their requirements and recommendations for safe operations of camps during COVID-19). We will keep all registered families updated and have provided our Preparing for Camp Guide and Travel Guide for registered participants as links that will be updated as needed, instead of a published final document, and we thank you in advance for your adaptability as well as your very important role in helping us provide a safe and successful summer at camp to each and every person who needs it.

What will we do?

The Family Camp schedule is designed for your family to have fun, try new experiences, and enjoy the summer in a safe environment, to connect with each other and spend quality time together, and to build community with others, individually or as a family,

while also giving you choice and flexibility in how you spend your time.

While at camp, our staff will let you know the full schedule of what’s going on, and help you plan your day.  Some of the activities we offer are:

Where will we sleep?

Your family will stay together in a cabin with bunk beds. Some cabins are one large room, and some have a divider or partition separating the space into one smaller sleeping space and one larger sleeping space. Cabins have electricity (but are not air conditioned). Bathroom/shower facilities are located a short walk away (a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on the cabin) and shared with several other cabins. (Bathrooms/showers are modernized indoor facilities, with electricity/running water/flush toilets).

Are we eligible/Is it right for us?

Family Camp True Colors is for families with at least one member (of any age or family role, adult or child) who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community.  While all families that fit this are welcome, as is anyone of any age who you consider to be a member of your family, this program is best suited to family groups with at least one child age 5-17, and at least one adult 18+ who is a parent and/or primary caregiver of that child. If that doesn't describe your group but you are interested in Family Camp, please contact us before registering so we can help make sure it will be a positive experience for everyone.

All children under 18 must have a custodial parent/guardian/caregiver at Family Camp with them, who will be responsible for their overall supervision during the entire session.

Can we combine both sessions for a longer stay?

Yes! We do have a cleaning period between the two sessions, so we will likely ask you to spend a few hours exploring the nearby area if you have transportation, or stick to a specific area of camp if you do not. We will try our hardest to keep you in the same cabin for your whole stay, but can’t guarantee it.

What will we eat?


Participants are provided with 3 balanced (and delicious!) meals and 2 snacks daily and have the option of visiting the cereal or salad bar instead of or in addition to what is served
(Due to COVID-19, the cereal and salad bar will not be open in 2021, but an alternative option to what is served will always be available).

We recognize the individual needs of our participants and have dietary restriction friendly foods, as well as extra snack foods, available on an as-needed basis to guarantee that our participants get the nutrition they need.  Given advance notice, we have a gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian version of each of our menu items that can be made and we will work to accommodate other needs as well. Due to the nature of our facility we cannot guarantee an environment free from cross-contamination of any allergen.  The best way to let us know about dietary restrictions, food allergies, or other unique dietary needs is on the participant’s Medical Form, at least four weeks before your session. If you have a more complex dietary need and/or would like to talk about dietary or other needs before signing up, feel free to contact us.

Who is in charge?


During family camp, the adults in your family are the ones ultimately responsible for the supervision and care of the children in your family. However, with their adult’s permission, school-age children and teens are able to participate in some activities separately, supervised/led by camp staff. Our expert staff are also there to lead the activities, take care of food service, and help you throughout your time at camp.

Our summer staff are dedicated to making sure camp is a safe, welcoming, and fun place for each and every participant. They are carefully chosen through a rigorous screening process, and all attend an extensive, immersive pre-summer training where they are specifically trained to work with our participants, as well in areas specific to their individual role. Camp staff members come from many backgrounds and many places, but what they all have in common is they are fun, energetic and devoted to making camp a great time for each and every person!

All of our staff that work directly with participants are required to be certified in CPR & First Aid, and all activities at the pool and lake are supervised by certified lifeguards.

One Heartland is licensed as a Youth Camp through the state of Minnesota, as well as accredited by the American Camp Association. Accreditation is a voluntary designation earned through thorough and regular review that signifies a high quality, safe, and nurturing camp program, facility, and staff above and beyond state licensing requirements, and  reflects the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation.  For more information about ACA accreditation, refer to their website at acacamps.org.

What does it cost? What does the cost include?

We believe camp should be available for everyone who needs it, regardless of their financial situation.  All of our program fees use a sliding scale fee structure, with costs for Family Camp ranging from $50-$200 for ages 7-adult and $25-$100 for ages 3-6, based on household size and income. Ages 0-2 are always $0, but must still be registered.

We also offer payment plans, with the non-refundable deposit ($5, $10, $15, or $25 per person depending on your sliding scale level) paid to register and hold your spot. Your remaining balance must be paid in full no later than four weeks before your camp session, unless you have arranged a different payment agreement with us. However, for those who are able to pay or begin paying sooner we encourage you to do so, as it allows us to begin fully preparing for camp sooner.

Included in the cost of Family Camp is 3 night’s stay in a cabin or retreat room, all meals and snacks during your stay, and all activities. Transportation from a central location in the Twin Cities metro area or MSP airport, and bedding/linens are also included if those options are selected in your registration. The cost is a flat fee per person, with no hidden costs - options offered by One Heartland such as bedding/linens, bus transportation, or special activities do not have any additional charge.

Not included is any additional individual travel costs beyond what we provide. We are also unable to provide cribs, high chairs, or meals for children who are too young for solid food. However, children 2 and under are welcome at no cost if families are able to provide for these needs.

What if we have to cancel?

If you need to cancel one or more of your family members’ registration(s), all but the deposit amount is refundable up to four weeks prior to the start of your camp session.  Between two and four weeks prior to your session, 50% of your fees (minus the deposit) are refundable.  No refunds are available for cancellations received less than two weeks prior to the start of your camp session.

Exceptions to this policy are made only:

In these cases, the camp fees can be transferred to another suitable session later in the summer or the following summer.  If another appropriate session cannot be determined, the fees will be refunded, minus the non-refundable deposit amount.

Refunds will not be considered for participants who are absent on arrival day without notifying One Heartland, unless it can be shown that an emergency situation occurred that made communication impossible and the circumstances also meet the criteria for a refund listed above.

In all cases of cancellation, we ask as a courtesy to other participants that you let us know as soon as you know that you need to cancel your registration, as there may be other participants on the waitlist.

One Heartland is committed to keeping costs/financial concerns from being a barrier to attending camp, while ensuring our programs are financially sustainable for years to come.  Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about this policy or the cost of camp.

How do we get there?

How do we sign up?

Registration, the forms to be completed before camp, and payment are all online at https://oneheartland.campbrainregistration.com/ (or through the “register for camp” button at oneheartland.org).  If online registration is not possible for you, contact us to get the materials in an alternate format. For questions about or help with the online registration process, please contact us - we’re here to help make it as easy as possible for you.  

Common questions about online registration:

Who can I register? 

In your online account at https://oneheartland.campbrainregistration.com/, you have the ability to register anyone in your household/family who lives at the same address as you. You can register everyone at the same time, or come back later to add someone else - however we recommend registering everyone at once if you are able to as spaces may fill up.

For anyone additional in your family group, an adult from the other household(s) will need to register their household with their own account. During registration, you’ll be asked to let us know if there’s anyone in another household who should be part of your group and housed with/near you.

I don’t see the session I want and/or I don’t see any sessions.  Is it full?

Not necessarily! You will always still be able to see a full session and add waitlist spots to your cart.  

If you do not see the session(s) you want as an option, first make sure that you are in the correct registration season (Family Camp, not Summer Camp), and secondly check that the birth date of the person you are trying to register was entered correctly on the previous page. If you need help with this or the problem continues, please contact us.  

What name should I use to create my account and/or register? Do you need my/my child’s legal name?

I can’t get into the registration site!

Accounts are by household/family. If anyone in your immediate family/household has attended any One Heartland program before, whether you registered online or on paper, you already have an account.  If anyone in your immediate family/household has started to register online, but did not finish or did not attend the program, you already have an account. If this sounds like you, try the following steps:  

  1. Confirm you are on the correct registration site - https://oneheartland.campbrainregistration.com/
  2. Try logging in with the email address and password you have used in the past. If you forgot your password, or have only registered on paper, click "reset password" and enter the email address you have previously provided.
  3. If you no longer have access to the email address you have previously provided, previously only registered on paper without providing an email address, or are otherwise still unable to log in, contact us to be sent a link to re-access your account. Please do not create another account.

If you are completely new to One Heartland, follow the prompts to create a new user (household) account. The first and last name provided must be of a primary parent/guardian/adult caregiver if the participant is currently under 18, and the email address provided should be the main email that communications about camp should go to for your family/household.  If you get an error message that the email address is already in use, follow the steps above.  If you get another type of error message, contact rbell@oneheartland.org for assistance.
