Echosis

Set Notes

Echosis is set in an ancient future, where classical Greece is spliced into a ambient utopia. There is only one city left on earth, Thespia, a lush oasis surrounded on all sides by an endless gradient of grey desert. The Gods are in power, and they dabble in the lives of the mortals via two rival alliences, Mt. Olympus (run by a council of Goddesses) and The Underworld (run by Hades and Persephone). Central to life in Thespia is liquid light (often referred to simply as “water”), a semi-divine fluid which can manifest the likeness of anything imaginable. There is a dazzling, acrobatic form of ceremonial combat called “dualing” which captivates everyone in the oasis. The two divine allience use dualing as a form of proxy warfare to assert their dominance over Thespia.

Dualing is a high-speed, turn-based tag game. Players alternate offensive and defensive turns. The hands are the target, and once both hands are tagged, a player is eliminated.

Set A: The Megaron

Narcissus’ spacious chill-pad. 4 translucent pillars elevate the high ceiling, and a small pool of liquid light is sunk into the floor at the rooms center. There is a 12-sided levitating table for Narcissus’ accessories. Sun-light pours in from an open-air oculus overhead.

Set B: Mt. Olympus

Towering above Thespiae, Mt. Olympus is a sleek, golden-cone of a skyscraper. At its base is a grand dualing court, and at the peak is are the chambers of the Goddesses.

Set C: The Underworld

Buried deep underground, beneath the oasis of Thespiae, sits The Underworld, a subtle brutalist compound. Hades and Persephone sit perched on high thrones of black noise, surrounded by a deathly-still lake of liquid light. All the liquid light in Thespiae is pumped from The Underworld.

Echosis

"... god-like ...

... ...

He had a cruel heart, and hated all of them,

Till he conceived a love for his own form:

He wailed, seeing his face, delightful as a dream,

Within a spring; he wept for his beauty.

Then the boy shed his blood and give it to the earth

... to bear "

- The Oxyrhynchus Papyri - 60BC

(oldest known account of Narcissus)

ACT I

SCENE 0

Hermes’ Intro

SETTING:        The infinite horizon of the gradient desert.

(Hermes approaches swiftly from the endless horizon, playing his silver harp and singing with haunted certainty. His lithe, mercurial form flickers with potential energy, graceful and restrained. He wears a cloak of quicksilver, and there is a small amphora strapped to his belt)

HERMES

(to the audience)

TO REVEAL THIS TRAGEDY,

THE ONLY THING I NEED

(Hermes dips his finger into the mouth of the Amphora, withdrawing a glowing tip.)

IS SOME LIQUID LIGHT.

IT’S A TRICK OF THE EYE.

(Hermes flicks his finger casually, as if to clean it off. The droplets of light dance in the air, making a spectral mandala of pattern before dissipating)

TO SEE IS TO BELIEVE.

THOUGH EACH AMPHORA HOLDS A UNIVERSE WITHIN,

BOTH ECHO AND NARCISSUS WILL BE EMPTY IN THE END.

AND IT’S A FAIR PRICE TO PAY,

OR SO THEY SAY.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW THE WAVES.

THE CIRCLE NEVER BREAKS,

AND THEY CANNOT ESCAPE.

EACH MUST PLAY THE 無理ゲー (Muri gē).

(As Hermes sings “Muri Gē, he overturns the amphora, which pours forth a prismatic wave of liquid light. The radiant fluid splashes wildly against the ground)

(Hermes alights)

(The splash dances with a divine enchantment, quickly rendering the marshy scene from it’s particulate droplets.)

SCENE 1

Dualing

SETTING:        A spring marsh at dusk. Insects and frogs chatter. A calm, shallow pool of liquid light is surrounded by moss and crystalline daffodils.

(Narcissus stands at the edge of the water. His hands are wet and glowing with liquid light. On all sides of him are Automotons, human-like, but clearly non-player characters. They all stand frozen.  Suddenly, as if unpausing a game, Narcissus and the automotons spring into action and the dual continues. They splash wildly in the pool as they take rapid turns attacking and defending. The automotons' mirrored exoskeletons reflect the water in prismic bursts of any-colored droplets. Narcissus is utterly confident, and competes with a casual aggression. )

(They take their turns rapidly, and Narcissus eliminates 2 of them in quick succession. The 3rd Automaton is clearly much higher level.  After a fierce volley of turns, Narcissus finally gains the advantage. He takes a moment to admire his own reflection in the surface of the automaton’s back before making an athletic final tag.)

NARCISSUS

KOOOWAAAA!

(Automaton 3 loses it’s balance and falls into the pool with an epic splash, merging with the liquid light)

(Pulling a small towel from his waistband, Narcissus drys off his hands. The marshy setting dissolves with a hiss of steam, revealing that Narcissus is in fact in his Megaron)

SCENE 2

Secret Reason

SETTING:        The Megaron -  Narcissus sits in his pool. A lavish plate of fruit and a towel sit within arm’s reach on a levitating table.

(Narcissus takes the same small towel and begins to wipe his eyes.)

NARCISSUS

(to himself, irritated by the demands of his body)

I WIPE THE LIGHT FROM MY EYES.

I’VE GROWN TIRED OF MY FATIGUE.

EVEN ONE MOUTH

IS ONE TOO MANY TO FEED.

(pushing the food away)

THE NEEDS OF THE FLESH IMPEDE

MY QUEST FOR IMMORTALITY.

(looking straight upward, with ambition)

I WILL NOT REST TILL I SLEEP ON OLYMPUS

PERMANENTLY.

(Narcissus stands up slowly in his pool, revealing a bare chest and a high-waisted lower torso wet-suit, branded with the logo of his sponsor, Mt. Olympus)

FOR THIS WORLD IS NOT MINE.

I AM NOT MY MIND.

MY BODY IS NOT ME.

(gestures as if he is going to step out of the pool…)

I AM BEYOND THESE THINGS.

(reversing direction/succumbing to temptation, he begins sinking back into the water)

AND I DO NOT NEED DEATH’S RELEASE TO BE FREE.

(the pool flickers, with building intensity, a swirl of spilling red, foreshadowing ACT II Scene 3’s climax, contradicting Narcissus’ claim of liberation.)

‘CAUSE I’VE GOT MY VERY OWN

SECRET REASON TO STAY AT HOME.

WHY WOULD I LEAVE WHEN

I ALREADY HOLD THE KEY IN MY HAND?

(Cupping a bit of water from his hand, it turns into a hand mirror)

AND I HAVE TO ADMIT,

I KNOW MY FACE IS IMMACULATE.

SO WHY WOULD I WASTE IT ON

SOMEBODY BASIC?

(stops admiring)

I’M GONNA SAVE MY KISS

(loneliness overtaking him briefly)

FOR JUST A COUPLE MINUTES MORE.

(Narcissus splashes hard twice with the beat, and snapping himself out of his self-pity. Stands and exits the pool)

I DON’T PRETEND TO PREFER

THINGS OF EARTH AND SKY.

I LIVE IN THE WATER,

(flexing)

HARDER THAN ICE.

I CAN’T RECALL THE FIRST TIME I IMBIBED

THE LIQUID LIGHT OF INFORMATION,

THAT MY MOTHERS PROVIDE.

(Unbeknownst to Narcissu, Echo peeks her head up out from below the water)

(awash in bliss)

I AM A FLOWER BLOOMING TONIGHT.

IF YOU PICK ME YOU’LL FIND,

YOU CAN’T PICK ME AT ALL.

‘CAUSE AFTER ALL...

I AM MY VERY OWN

SECRET REASON TO STAY AT HOME.

WHY WOULD I LEAVE WHEN

I ALREADY HOLD THE KEY IN MY HAND?

AND I HAVE TO ADMIT,

I KNOW MY FACE IS IMMACULATE.

SO WHY WOULD I WASTE IT ON

SOMEBODY BASIC?

I’M GONNA SAVE MY KISS

FOR JUST A COUPLE MINUTES MORE.

(loneliness overtaking him again, more deeply this time)

I HOPE

THAT LOVE WILL JOIN

ME WHERE I AM.

OOOO...

NARCISSUS

DON’T TURN ME AWAY!

ECHO

DON’T TURN ME AWAY!

(Upon hearing Echo’s voice, Narcissus turn around, mildly surprised. Seeming to recognize Echo, he is visibly uninterested in her presence)

SCENE 3

The Heartbeat Never Stops

SETTING:        The Megaron - Hermes floats outside the scene.

(Echo and Narcissus move in spurts of slow motion and regular speed)

HERMES

“BUZZ ME IN”

(Narcissus buzzes Echo in)

THIS IS HOW IT BEGINS.

(Echo enters the Megaron)

ONE MESSAGE TO GAIN ENTRANCE.

(Echo waves hello to Narcissus)

NOW THEY’RE FACE TO FACE,

(Narcissus plays in the water, ignoring Echo)

BUT SHE STAYS HIDDEN.

(Echo begins approaching Narcissus’ pool absentmindedly)

SAYING NOTHING TO HIM,

PRAYING FOR SKIN TO SKIN.

(Echo reaches into her purse...)

BUT IT WON’T HAPPEN.

ALL SHE’LL NOM IS KLONOPIN.

(removes a medicine bottle...)

2 FOR 5$.

WE ALL TAKE SOMETHING TO SURVIVE.

(opens it…)

SHE WON’T GET TO DECIDE WHAT SHE’S TAKING.

(pours a few pills into her hand...)

THEY PUT RESTRICTIONS ON HER,

ANYTHING JUST TO CALM HER DOWN.

(and takes them without water, just as she sits down next to Narcissus, who is oblivious)

NOW NARCISSUS IS MUCH TO VAIN FOR LOVE.

SPENDS ALL DAY PLAYING IN THE TUB.

(Echo sits admiring Narcissus, clearly in love with him)

WHAT’S IT GONNA TAKE TO WAKE HIM UP

FROM HIS PRIVILEGED IGNORANCE?

LIVING WITH HIS HEAD WET.

THEY’RE LUCKY THEY’RE NOT DEAD YET.

(Echo reaches out to touch Narcissus, then hesitates)

MAYBE THEY ALREADY ARE.

EACH MORTAL LIVES BUT A MOMENT.

IF I CLOSED MY EYES,

BEFORE THEY REOPENED

BOTH OF THEM WOULD BE GONE.

(Echo stands, frustrated)

MAYBE THEY ALREADY ARE.

EACH MORTAL LIVES BUT A MOMENT.

CUT ONE OF THEM OPEN AND RIP OUT THEIR HEART

YOU STILL WILL NOT SLOW THEM DOWN.

(Slow motion movement ends, normal speed resumes)

FOR THE HEARTBEAT NEVER STOPS. (x 12)

(Echo begins dancing passionately, desperately trying to get Narcissus’ attention)

(Narcissus is uninterested in Echo’s displays)

(Echo continues to increase the speed and intensity of her dancing, until she finally collapses, exhausted)

(Just as Echo falls, Hermes alights, running with an impossible speed towards Mt. Olympus)

SCENE 4

Behold Amphora

SETTING:  The Goddesses’ chambers on the top floor of the Mt. Olympus building. The Goddesses sit in council around a large round conference table. There is a circular opening (18 inches diameter) at the center of the table, out of which dances a small fire of liquid light.

(Hermes enters the Goddesses’ chambers and whispers something to Aphrodite, clearly gossiping )

(Hera stands, centered behind the dancing fire)

(As she begins singing, Hera sticks both of her hands into the fire, which crackles and intensifies in response)

HERA

ON THE DAY THAT PROMETHEUS CAME

(she lifts the fire upward out of its vessel. As she removes her hands, the ball of flame hovers)

TO STEAL OLYMPUS' FORBIDDEN FLAME,

(the fire ball morphs into a long slender cylinder)

I HANDED HIM THE FENNEL-STALK HE DIPPED

(the cylinder rotates until it is standing vertically)

INTO THE GODS' INFERNAL LIQUID.

(one end of the cylinder bursts into bright orange flames)

HE RETURNED TO THE EARTH.

(the torch morphs into an iPhone)

IN TIME, HIS TORCH TURNED TO HAND-HELD DEVICE.

(the iPhone’s glow pours out from the screen like milk in zero gravity)

WHERE FIRE ONCE BURNED, NOW LIQUID LIGHT.

(the spill swirls in the air)

SPILLING OUT INTO THE NIGHT

(the swirl begins to organize itself)

A PHOSPHORESCENT PANTOMIME

(the swirl turns serpentine)

A PHANTOM SLIME.

(now clearly a feathered serpent chasing it’s tail)

A RING OF GLOW.

(The serpent eats it's own tail and begins to spin in a circle over the center of the table. An egg appears in the center of the Ouroboric orbit. As it spins, the diameter of Ouroboric ring grows gradually larger, and it’s Egg becomes more spherical .)

SEMI-DIVINE OUROBOROS,

)

RIPPLING AROUND THE GLOBE.

(The Ouroboros is now the size of the entire table, and the sphere is now the earth )

AS OLYMPUS' CEO

I KNEW I HAD TO TAKE CONTROL.

(Hera slams her hands down on the table)

(the serpent now begins orbiting the earth in chaotic, wavy patterns)

(Athena stands, bringing forth a small blue porcelain amphora)

AND SO I HAD A VESSEL MADE,

(Athena hands Hera the amphora)

TO HOLD THE SERPENTINE WAVE

(Hera tracks the serpent’s trajectory carefully with her eye)

AND THE HUMANS' GAZE.

(Hera suddenly thrusts the amphora into the serpent's path)

A SAFE PLACE FOR THEM BOTH TO PLAY.

(The serpent flies directly into the mouth of the amphora, and as the last of it’s tail slams into the trap, while the earth continues to spin)

(Hera holds up the amphora triumphantly)

BEHOLD AMPHORA!

(Athena gazes upon the vessel with pride)

HERA + ATHENA

LIGHT'S CONTAINER

IT'S THE RULES THAT MAKE THE GAME WORK

IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE NOW, NOT TO REMEMBER HOW

TO FACE YOUR FATE:

(The stage lights suddenly go dim)

(Hera pours a few drops of light from the amphora onto the earth, which absorbs the light and grows brighter)

HERA

TO ILLUMINATE THE WORLD

(The earth turns to the head of Medusa the Gorgon, each snake on her head is clearly the Ouroboros)

AND SUBLIMATE ANIMAL RAGE.

(Hera pours more liquid light from the amphora onto Medusa’s head)

TURNING VIOLENCE INTO PLAY.

(The snakes retract, and Medusa turns into a laughing infant)

GODDESSES

ILLUMINATE THE WORLD.

(still pouring...)

SHIFT INTO EVERY SHAPE.

(The infant’s head begins shape shifting. Faster and faster until one cannot make out it’s form, and it appears a blurred light-ball)

HOW MANY FORMS CAN YOU TAKE?

(The light-ball explodes gently, sending out thousands of tittering sparks, which float like fireflies throughout the room, while also spilling back into the center of the table. The table’s fire returns, and begins pulsing with the beat of the kickdrum)

HERA

THE HEARTBEAT DRAWS THEM IN,

FOR THE GAME WON'T PLAY ITSELF.

(the sparks begin to extend themselves into lines, slowly tracing a isotropic vector matrix throughout the room)

THE GRID IS DRAWN.

IT'S ANOTHER LEVEL TO GET UP ON

(all the lines disappear, leaving behind a matrix of glowing dots(”souls”) where the lines intersected)

CHOOSE YOUR BODY WELL.

(the souls begin to drift towards the table)

ABANDONED SOULS IN THE ETHER

(the souls line up around the tables edge)

AND THEY'RE ALL WAITING IN LINE

(the souls begin to spiral in towards the table fire)

TO BATHE IN AMPHORA'S FIELD

(As the the souls pour into the fire, it grows more brightly)

EVEN ONE MORE TIME.

(The last soul rejoins the table fire, which is now dancing wildly)

ANY FORM WILL BE FINE.

(The dancing fire begins rising like a column)

OF ALL THE MYRIAD SETS OF RULES THAT AMPHORA HAS,

THERE ARE NONE MORE TRUE

(Hera plunges her hands into the column of light )

THAN THOSE ONE HIT, ONE KILL, ONE ON ONES.

(Withdrawing her hands, they are now glowing white)

THE JEWEL THAT IS THE DUAL!

(Hera looks at her hands with joy and power)

HERA

(to the audience)

WHO WILL CHALLENGE WHO?

WHO WOULD YOU CHALLENGE FIRST?

HERA

REMEMBER THAT IT'S:

YOU vs. THE UNIVERSE.

(The Mt. Olympus building begins to melt away, transitioning to the grand dualing court)

Scene 6

The Tournament

SETTING:                   A massive dualing stadium, full of

spectators.

Narcissus duals for Mt.Olympus, and Adonis for The Underworld.

(Adonis makes an extended dance entrance.)

(Narcissus walks through the arched entrance to the grand dualing court, where he is met by the roar of a massive crowd.)

(Hermes is serving as referee.)

(The dual begins, and after each winning 2 rounds each, Narcissus finally defeats Adonis with an epic long range leap-tag.)

(The crowd loses it’s mind.)

(Adonis assumes cut flower form [liquid-light shape-shifting] as a sacrifice to Nemesis, with a prayer that Narcissus be punished.)

Scene 7

Hermes Interlude I

SETTING:        Narcissus stands on the winners podium.

HERMES

NARCISSUS ATTAINS, THE THINGS HE’D ALWAYS SOUGHT.

HIS PRIZE, HIS NAME, AND HIS BATTLE FOUGHT.

OF WHAT USE IS FAME AND A TROPHY,

IF TO GAIN THEM YOUR LEGS MUST ATROPHY?

LIKE HIS HEART HAS...

IT’S QUITE HARD TO GROW IT BACK.

BUT IT'S A FAIR PRICE TO PAY,

OR SO THEY SAY.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW THE WAVES.

ECHO RISES UP AS NARCISSUS DECAYS.

EVEN WHEN HE'S GONE

HER LOVE WON'T GO AWAY.

Scene 8

A Ghost Goes

SETTING: The Megaron - Narcissus sits is in the pool. A carbon-ice bucket with champagne sits levitating at his side, as Echo rises from the edge of the pool.

(Narcissus pops open the champagne bottle. He pours two glasses and hands one to Echo.)

NARCISSUS

(Awash in the glory of victory)

I ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING.

ECHO

(utterly infatuated)

YOU KNOW ALREADY.

NARCISSUS

IT ISN'T HARD TO TELL

ECHO

TELL IT!

NARCISSUS

TO TELL THE THE TRUTH,

I ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU WANT FROM ME.

                                        ECHO

WANT ME.

WANT ME.

NARCISSUS

BECAUSE I WANT IT FROM MYSELF.

BUT YOU...

                                        ECHO

BUT YOU...

(Echo reaches out to touch Narcissus, and he touches her shoulder, stopping her gently.)

                                        NARCISSUS

BUT YOU WILL NEVER PULL MY TRIGGER.

TAKE A PICTURE OF MY PICTURE.

YOU CAN'T TOUCH WHAT'S IN MY MIRROR.

I ONLY SEE ME.

I COLLECT THE FAIREST GAZES.

NARCISSUS

I SKIP OVER WHOEVER I WANT.

ECHO

NARCISSUS

I DIP TOES IN WHATEVER I WANT.

ECHO

I WANT IT WHATEVER!

NARCISSUS

A GHOST GOES.

ECHO

A GHOST GOES?

(Echo, overwhelmed by grief, dips her head under water and checks out.)

Scene 9

Echo’s Tesseract

SETTING:        Megaron - Narcissus sits in the pool while Echo dances. He occasionally drinks from the champagne bottle.

GODDESSES

ECHO!

(Echo’s performs a devastating dance solo)

(The Goddesses enter, unseen by Echo or Narcissus)

(Echo begins visibly crying tears of light, and breaks down)

(Aphrodite approaches Echo)

APHRODITE

(to Echo)

DON'T WIPE THEM AWAY.

YOUR TEARS WILL ONLY TURN TO ICE.

FEEL THE LIGHT ON YOUR FACE

AND LET IT GLOW.

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT

THE HEART IS A TESSERACT.

YOUR FEELINGS CANNOT PASS INTO 4D

GODDESSES

YOU ARE ALREADY FREE (FALLING IN LOVE)

ATHENA

(to Echo)

HE'S IS THE WRONG THING TO BE AFRAID OF.

THERE IS NO GROUND,

AND YOU'LL ALWAYS BE FALLING.

NOW, CATCH YOUR BREATH

AND RETURN TO THE PRESENT TENSE.

DO YOU SEE YOUR HANDS?

THEY CAN REVERSE FATE.

SO DON'T WALK AWAY.

MAYBE YOUR MOMENT HAS YET TO COME

FOR THE GAME IS NOT YET LOST NOR WON.

AND HE MAY NEED YOU TO SAVE THE

HERA + ECHO

MEMORY

HERA

(to Echo)

THE IMPERMANENT DESIGN

WILL NOT GO AWAY.

IT FEELS LIKE THIS FOREVER.

SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL PLAY AND PLAY.

THEY SAY IF YOU'RE FAST ENOUGH

YOU CAN CATCH UP

TO THE LEADER

AND DEFEAT HER.

IT IS YOU WHO MUST LOSE CONTROL.

(Echo then begins to sob uncontrollably, and her tears become a thunderstorm in Thespiae)

Scene 10

Revenge For Existence

SETTING:        It is gentle raining liquid light. Narcissus is standing at the base of Mt. Olympus.

NARCISSUS

(looking up at the Mt.Olympus logo)

SOME CHILDREN WONDER WHERE THEY CAME FROM.

(Narcissus enters the building, which has a brutal lobby.)

I ONLY WONDERED HOW THE GAME WAS WON.

(shoots the Automoton security guard)

YEAH…

(beacon strobes start flashing)

SOME CHILDREN WANT TO KNOW HOW IT ALL BEGAN.

(jumps behind the security counter )

I NEVER ASKED MY MOTHERS QUESTIONS.

(hacking the security system) I PLUGGED MYSELF IN AND REGAINED CONTROLLER.

(throws up his own face on Mt. Olympus’ logo screen)

I RENDERED MYSELF IN MY OWN IMAGE. SO SURE,

(dropping the security blast shield just before a wave of backup Automotons arrive)

AND SO CERTAIN THAT I COULD WIN.

(runs over and presses the elevator up button)

THE MANTLE OF DOMINATION KEPT ME HIDDEN.

(Narcissus enters the elevator, the doors slam shut as the chorus begins)

REVENGE FOR EXISTING. REVENGE FOR EXISTENCE!

MY BODY THE PRISON TO WHICH I WAS SENTENCED. REVENGE FOR EXISTING!

REVENGE FOR EXISTENCE!

MY BODY THE PRISON TO WHICH I WAS SENTENCED.

(The elevator reaches the top floor. The doors open. Narcissus draws his blaster and begins moving fluidly, like a stream of flowing water, searching for the Goddesses.)

MY BEAUTY CONDEMNED ME.

AN EMPTY CONTAINER.

A MEMORY ALREADY GONE.

I WOKE FROM THAT COMA AND ENTERED OLYMPUS

WITH ALL OF MY WEAPONS DRAWN.

THE TASTE OF THE WATER. IT’S EFFORTLESS POWER.

EACH GESTURE OF WAR IS A JOY.

COME PLACE YOUR DISFIGURED FORMS ON THE CROSS OF MY FIRE. RETURN TO THE VOID.

THE WORLD IS DESTROYED AND REMADE IN MY IMAGE. THE EARTH IS MY MIRRORED BALL.

MY FACE WILL BE BURNED INTO EVERY SURFACE. A LIMITLESS BEAUTY EVOLVES.

(Narcissus now aiming at the Goddesses and moving steadily towards them)

TELL ME MY MOTHERS

WHAT IS THERE TO KEEP ME FROM TURNING YOU EACH INTO FLAME? LIFE IS A GAME AND THE RULES ARE IRRELEVANT.

WAS ALL MY LIFE JUST A GAME?

I KNOW THE REASON THAT I PLAYED... REVENGE FOR EXISTING.

REVENGE FOR EXISTENCE! MY BODY THE PRISON

TO WHICH I WAS SENTENCED.

AND FROM WHICH I ESCAPED.

AND TO WHICH YOU MUST BOW.

FOR I AM THE NEW KING OF MT. OLYMPUS

NOW!

(The Goddess laugh snidely at Narcissus’ arrogance. Hera walks up and takes the weapon from his hand.)

Scene 11

Pay In Blood

SETTING:        Mt. Olympus - The Goddess stand around Narcissus’ pool in a semi circle.

APHRODITE

(to Narcissus)

WE HAVE WATCHED YOU FALL INTO TIME,

LIKE A DIAMOND DROPPED INTO THE OCEAN.

WITHOUT A HAND TO RETRIEVE YOU.

YOUR APPETITE FOR LIGHT HAS LEFT YOU BLIND,

AND BLOODIES THE KNIFE OF YOUR DEVOTION.

YOU HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME AND NO EXCUSE.

NARCISSUS YOU HAVE DEVOLVED INTO A SLIME,

AND INNOCENCE IS NOT ALWAYS A VIRTUE.

YOU DESERT THE ONES CLOSEST TO YOU.

GODDESSES

AND IF YOU DON’T START WAKING UP,

YOU’LL PAY IN BLOOD.

YOU’LL PAY IN BLOOD.

AND IF YOU DON’T START WAKING UP,

YOU’LL PAY IN BLOOD.

YOU’LL PAY IN BLOOD.

APHRODITE

(to Narcissus)

I ADMIT SOME BLAME MUST FALL ON ME

FOR WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD I NEVER SHOWED YOU

HOW TO WIELD YOUR BEAUTY’S POWER.

YOU HELD YOUR GAZE, UNTIL IT BURNED,

AND NEVER TURNED TO FACE THE OTHER.

NARCISSUS YOU IMITATE INFINITY.

A PICTURE THAT IS STARING AT A PICTURE.

A SERPENT WHICH ITSELF DEVOURS ITSELF.

(Narcissus is drinking heavily)

GODDESSES

AND IF YOU DON’T START WAKING UP,

YOU’LL PAY IN BLOOD.

YOU’LL PAY IN BLOOD.

AND IF YOU DON’T START WAKING UP,

YOU’LL PAY IN BLOOD.

YOU’LL PAY IN BLOOD.

(Narcissus is fully wasted at this point)

NARCISSUS

(drunken raving ego)

HUH Y'ALL AIN’T READY

(muttering incoherently)

(Narcissus collapses, and passes out stage right)

(BLACKOUT)

(END ACT 1)

ACT II

Scene 1

Hermes Interlude III

SETTING:         The Megaron. Echo is sitting, holding her knees, while Narcissus is passed out asleep. Hermes stands.

HERMES

AMPHORA IS WAITING FOR HER

LIKE A ONE WAY DOOR.

(The Goddesses approach her from 3 sides, in symmetry. Each is carrying a small amphora.)

IT WILL GIVE HER WHAT SHE WANTS

AND NOTHING MORE.

(Athena offers a hand to Echo)

SHE HAS A DREAM THAT SHE'LL SPEAK YET AGAIN,

(Echo takes Athena’s hand and stands)

FINALLY FINDING THE WORDS THAT ARE HER'S.

NO MORE REPEATING THOSE MEANINGLESS FEELINGS.

SHE PEEL OFF THE SEAL TILL HER FEELING RETURNS.

AND SHE WILL BE HEARD.

HOW COULD SHE NOT BE?

THEY WILL LIFT HER CURSE, SHE WILL KISS HIS WORDS,

SHE WILL WEAR HIS BODY.

(the Goddesses begin to pour liquid light onto Echo’s head, a triangle of streams)

AS SHE IS SUBMERGED

IN THE MILK OF THE POPPY

(As the liquid light pours onto Echo’s face, she morphs into Echosis, the spitting image of Narcissus)

HER BODY TURNS

INTO HIS PERFECT COPY.

(Hera holds up a mirror to Echosis)

(Echosis inspects herself, touching her new face with trepidation)

IT'S A FAIR PRICE TO PAY,

OR SO THEY SAY.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW THE WAVES.

(Echosis turns away from the mirror, looking towards Narcissus)

ECHOSIS RISES UP AS NARCISSUS DECAYS.

HURRY NOW!

GO FIND YOUR LOVE!

THERE IS NOT A MOMENT TO WASTE!

(Echosis walks slowly towards Narcissus)

Scene 2

The Face Of Love

SETTING:         The Megaron

(Narcissus awakens from his stupor to see Echosis, his copy, slowly approaching him. He rubs his eyes in disbelief, then stands quickly, never looking away from Echosis)

NARCISSUS

(awestruck by Echosis’ beauty)

OH MY MOTHERS!

TELL ME QUICKLY,

WHAT DOES MY VISION FALL UPON?

WHO IS THIS VIVID VISION,

SPLITTING ME LIKE A PRISM

INTO LIGHTS?

I LOOK INTO MY EYES

AND LOVE IS A PRISON.

AH!

(Echosis turns, and they make their first eye contact)

NARCISSUS + ECHOSIS

THE WAS A TIME WHEN OUR GAZES WERE FUCKED,

NOW WE ARE FINALLY WAKING UP.

WE CAN LOOK INTO THE FACE OF LOVE

IF WE'RE BRAVE ENOUGH.

EVEN THOUGH WE'RE AFRAID TO TOUCH,

EVEN THOUGH IT'S MUCH TOO DANGEROUS.

WE CAN LOOK INTO THE FACE OF LOVE

IF WE'RE BRAVE ENOUGH.

(While maintaining eye contact, the lovers begin to circle the stage, orbiting the pool, with a gradually quickening pace)

NARCISSUS

WATER IS THAT LIFE.

THE HOLY ELEMENT.

AND WE IDENTIFY

AS HER TWIN HYDROGENS.

ECHOSIS

THE TEARS THE PLANET CRIES.

THE EVAPORATION.

THE POOL THAT WE ARE IN.

NARCISSUS

THE POOL THAT I AM IN.

THE FOOL THAT I HAVE BEEN.

THE HABITUAL GRIND.

ECHOSIS

THE ORIGINAL WAVE,

IT'S IMPOSSIBLE LIGHT.

NARCISSUS

THE SHADOW OF YOUR FACE

IS CAST UPON MY MIND,

ECHOSIS

(finishing Narcissus’ line)

LIKE A FLOWER ON THE GRAVE OF YOUR WASTED LIFE!

NARCISSUS

THE JOY OF DEATH'S RELEASE.

ECHOSIS

THE FORM BEYOND THE FORM.

NARCISSUS

AN ATEMPORAL BEAT REPEATEDLY REBORN.

ECHOSIS

REPEATEDLY REBORN.

NARCISSUS

REPEATEDLY REBORN.

NARCISSUS + ECHOSIS

LIKE THE BLEATING OF A HORN.

NARCISSUS

HAVE I REALLY EVER SEEN ANYONE BEFORE?

ECHOSIS

DON'T TELL ME I'M DREAMING.

NARCISSUS

PLEASE TELL ME I'M YOURS.

NARCISSUS + ECHOSIS

TELEPATHICALLY OUR LOVE TELEPORTS.

BREATHING BACK AND FORTH AND BACK AND FORTH.

WHO KNOWS WHO?

WE DO,

WITH TWO FACES

THE WAS A TIME WHEN OUR GAZES WERE FUCKED,

NOW WE ARE FINALLY WAKING UP.

WE CAN LOOK INTO THE FACE OF LOVE

IF WE'RE BRAVE ENOUGH.

EVEN THOUGH WE'RE AFRAID TO TOUCH,

EVEN THOUGH IT'S MUCH TOO DANGEROUS.

WE CAN LOOK INTO THE FACE OF LOVE

IF WE'RE BRAVE ENOUGH.

(The lovers’ orbit has finally brought them face to face, standing on either side of the pool)

NARCISSUS

LOVER!

ECHOSIS

OTHER!

NARCISSUS

HEAR ME NOW.

(unnoticed by the lovers, the three Goddesses holding hands, step into the pool, transforming into Nemesis)

ECHOSIS

(gesturing Narcissus in even closer)

CLOSER,

WHISPER

(Nemesis towers like a shadow behind the lovers)

NEAR MY MOUTH.

NARCISSUS

MAY I YOUR LIPS?

(incredibly close now)

(Nemesis reaches into the pool with their hand)

ECHOSIS

HOW I’VE WAITED FOR IT...

(Right as they are about to kiss, Nemesis pulls the drain-plug out of the pool with a tremendous “Pop!”.)

(Narcissus spins around violently and he is shocked to see Nemesis standing in front of him)

(Nemesis holds up the swinging chain of the drain stopper, briefly hypnotizing Narcissus)

NARCISSUS

(in disbelief)

WHAT IS THIS?

WHAT IS THIS?

(The liquid light begins draining rapidly and Echosis is steadily pulled downwards.)

WHAT IS THIS?

WHAT IS THIS?

(suddenly coming to his senses)

(Narcissus drops to his knees, desperately cupping the last of the water as it drains)

WHAT IS THIS?

WHAT IS THIS?

WHAT IS THIS?

WHAT IS THIS?

(switching to rage)

WHAT IS THIS!?

WHAT IS THIS!?

WHAT IS THIS!?

WHAT IS THIS!?

NEMESIS

THAT FILTHY POOL HAS FILLED YOU WITH MILDEW,

AND IT WILL KILL YOU.

(Echosis is being pulled down the drain, and screaming, struggles to stay above water)

NARCISSUS

(really losing his mind now)

WHAT IS THIS??

WHAT IS THIS??

WHAT IS THIS??

NEMESIS

(unwaveringly)

YOU ARE CUT OFF.

(Echosis hovers, with only a finger hold left on the edge of the drain)

NARCISSUS

(insane)

WHAT IS THIS??

WHAT IS THIS??

WHAT IS THIS??

NEMESIS

IT MUST STOP!

(Echosis disappears)

NARCISSUS

(tragedy setting in)

WHAT IS THIS??

Scene 3

The Mirror Breaks

SETTING:         The Megaron

(Narcissus sits on the damp floor of the now empty pool)

NARCISSUS

(with advancing despondency)

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN THE ENTIRE WORLD WAS ALIVE TO ME.

AND I BELIEVED

THAT THE SELF WAS ENOUGH.

THAT MY LOVE WOULD PROVIDE.

THAT MY IMMORTAL NAME HELD THE MEANING OF LIFE.

(a last flicker of his former appetite for power)

AND WHEN I SAW MYSELF LIKE A GOD IN THE NIGHT

I COULD NOT TURN AWAY.

I WOULD NOT AVERT MY EYES.

(collapsing, realizing the power is empty)

AS THE MIRROR BREAKS

I AM LEFT WITH SOMETHING I CANNOT ACCEPT.

FULL CAST

(Cast is stereoscopic spread throughout the room)

IT'S A LONG WAY DOWN

TO THE UNDERWORLD.

NARCISSUS

(Narcissus picks up his hand mirror and gazes at himself)

(with an intimate self-love)

TINY DETAILS, THINGS THAT NOBODY KNOWS.

EVERY HAIR EVERY LINE, HELD IMPOSSIBLY CLOSE.

I KNEW MYSELF LIKE THE BACK OF MY HAND,

LIKE THE TASTE OF MY BLOOD,

LIKE THE SOUND OF MY BREATH.

(hopeless frustration)

YEAH, I GOT AS CLOSE AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN,

AND I STILL COULDN'T TOUCH MY REFLECTION.

(Narcissus shatters his hand mirror)

AS THE MIRROR BREAKS,

I AM LEFT WITH

SOMETHING I CANNOT ACCEPT.

IT'S AN IMPASSE THEY HAVE ME TRAPPED IN.

I'LL TURN THEM BACK INTO A SIMULACRUM.

(The Goddesses dissolve out of their Nemesis form as they begin to sing solemnly)

FULL CAST

IT'S A LONG WAY DOWN

TO THE UNDERWORLD.

NARCISSUS

(with a deeper love emerging)

AND I WILL WAIT THERE FOR THEM

TO COME AND JOIN ME.

AND IN THAT MOMENT I WILL SHOW THEM MY LOVE

IS REAL.

(Narcissus grabs a shard of his broken hand mirror)

SO BABY UNTIL THEN,

I CAN ONLY SAY GOODBYE.

(At “GOODBYE”, Narcissus pulls the mirror shard across his wrist. His blood slowly spills down the drain, as if chasing after his love.)

Scene 4

Lamdaath

SETTING:          A drainage room beneath the Megaron. It has cold Cold concrete, with flecks on liquid light condensating on the walls and floor.

(Echosis lies on her back. dazed. Sporadic droplets of Narcissus’ blood drip onto her forehead, rousing her gradually.  The Narcissus’ “goodbye” echos over and over again.)

ECHOSIS

(Echoing the “I” sound from Narcissus’“goodbye”)

I…

(with the epic vulnerability, first moments of free communication)

I HAVE…

(Overwhelmed by her awakening, crying.)

WAIT…

(regaining composure)

I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS MISTAKE

TO CRY MYSELF AWAKE.

(recognizing her own strength)

TEARS HAVE TAKEN SO LONG.

BUT I WAITED FOR THEM, TO FALL BACK INWARD.

MY WET HEART OPENED.

AND IN A MOMENT

I WILL SHOW HIM MY LOVE

(turning towards Narcissus’ body)

IS REAL…

(Seeing his blood pour into the drain, the reality of Narcissus’ death hits her.)

(an unbearable agony)

HOW CAN THIS BE?

HOW COULD YOU TAKE YOURSELF FROM ME?

NOW I AM STARING AT AN EMPTY SCREEN!

WILL THE SAME TEARS WHICH FOUND ME, DROWN ME?

OH HAVE I BEEN

TURNED TO A SELF-OBSOLETING MACHINE?

(Suddenly the floor cracks open, revealing a downward spiral ramp into the Underworld.)

I REFUSE TO BELIEVE.

I REFUSE TO BELIEVE!

(Echosis picks up Narcissus’ amphora and begins to run, signalling her descent into the Underworld)

Scene 5

The Descent

SETTING:         Echosis is running with her weapon down a expanding spiral ramp towards the Underworld.

(As she descends, she passes the ascending Sisyphus, who is rolling his boulder up the same slope. The sound of his boulder is harsh and massive.)

(Upon arriving at the gates of the Underworld, Echosis is met by Cerebus, the guardians of The Underworld.)

(Echosis fights with great fury, but she is overwhelmed by Cerberus, and the dogs drag Echosis before Hades and Persephone.)

Scene 6

So Be It

SETTING:          The Underworld.

(The thrones of Hades and Persephone loom, while behind them the blue screen mountains of death stretch out endlessly.)

HADES

(looking down to Echosis)

YOU STAND BEFORE DEATH HIMSELF

THE BANE OF GODS AND MEN

I HAVE LAID 100 BILLION SOULS TO WASTE

YOUR LIFE IS IRRELEVANT

PERSEPHONE

(to Echosis)

WHAT HAVE YOU COME FOR?

HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?

THERE IS NOTHING HERE, NOT EVEN TIME.

ECHOSIS

I HAVE COME FOR

THE SOUL OF MY SOURCE.

AND, IF I MUST,

I WILL TAKE IT BY FORCE.

HADES

    (jeeringly to Echosis)

GO AHEAD AND DRAW YOUR BLADE

I CANNOT BE CUT.

YOUR LIFE IS MADE AND MEASURED BY THE HANDS OF THE FATES.

I'LL HAVE YOU SOON ENOUGH.

YOUR LOVE NARCISSUS WAS NOT A CHILD.

HIS JUDGEMENT WAS JUST.

HIS SOUL IS HELD WITHIN THE REALM OF ASHPODEL,

IMPRISONED IN HIS LUST.

PERSEPHONE

(to Echosis, with a maternal affection)

OH FORGOTTEN CHILD

YOU HAVE COME SO FAR

JUST LIKE A STAR FALLS TO THE EARTH

YOU FELL INTO MY HEART!

(to Hades)

HADES! I HAVE SEEN THEIR TEARS.

I'VE HEARD THEIR WAILS.

AND THE REASON THEIR HERE IS NOT ARROGANCE.

     (with compassionate scorn)

THEY ARE INNOCENT LIKE I WAS

WHEN YOU BROUGHT ME HERE!

HADES

   (with guilty vulnerability)

WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE ME DO?

PERSEPHONE

LET ECHO’S WISH DECIDE.

ECHOSIS

      (with dreamy affection)

DROP ME INTO THE POOL

OF NARCISSUS' EYES.

    (her seriousness returning)

AND IF I MUST DIE

TO BE WET AGAIN,

THEN LET THE END

BEGIN.

PERSEPHONE

YOU CANNOT TURN BACK NOW

THIS IS FOREVER!

ECHOSIS

SO BE IT!

HADES

SO BE IT!

PERSEPHONE

SO BE IT!

PERSEPHONE, ECHOSIS, HADES

SO BE IT!

PERSEPHONE

(to Echosis)

BY CHOOSING LOVE YOU HAVE CHOSEN DEATH.

ECHOSIS

(to Persephone)

THERE WAS NO CHOICE.

I HAD NOTHING LEFT.

HADES

SO BE IT!

SO BE IT!

PERSEPHONE

(to Echosis)

FEAR IS THE MATERIAL FROM WHICH THE EARTH WAS MADE.

HADES

SO BE IT!

PERSEPHONE + ECHOSIS

ONE DAY WE WILL ALL ESCAPE.

PERSEPHONE

(to Echosis)

BUT UNTIL THAT DAY

WE EACH MUST ENDURE

AN OCEAN OF PAIN.

PERSEPHONE + HADES

SO LET YOUR TEARS FALL TO THE FLAMES

FOR YOUR RAIN NEEDS HELL TO EVAPORATE.

(Narcissus enters, and is stunned to see Echosis before him.)

Scene 7

Wait Always

SETTING:                The Underworld.

NARCISSUS

(impatient with passion)

DO I HAVE TO WAIT ALWAYS?

(gesturing for Echosis)

COME TO MY LOVE’S REPLY.

(Echosis hesitates, conflicted)

TOUCH ME.

PLEASE HURRY.

IM STILL ON MY FIRST LIFE!

I KNOW YOUR EYES CAN'T SAVE ME.

BACK IT UP.

TRY…

ECHOSIS

I DON'T WANNA FACE ALWAYS

JUST TO FIND I COULD NOT EVEN FIND

THAT SHAPE OUR ECHOES MADE.

YOUR FACE REFLECTING MINE

(I’M) ALREADY HALF-ERASED

THERE ARE FILES I'LL NEVER FIND

SUDDENLY I REMEMBER THE WORLD JUST AS IT IS;

AN IMPRISONMENT IN LIQUID.

WHAT IF I DID NOT WANT TO GET WET?

NARCISUSS

(trying to convince her)

THROUGH EVERY DROP OF WATER RUNS A STRING

THE VERY THING WE ARE

NARCISUSS + ECHOSIS

STRANDED LIKE PEARLS

STRUNG BETWEEN THE STARS

NARCISUSS

(with historical awakening)

THIS POWER LINE ISN'T OURS

THE GRID WAS DRAWN ACROSS MY WRISTS

TILL THE WATER IN MY HEART

MUDDIED WITH A DROP OF

NARCISUSS + ECHOSIS

YOU…

ECHOSIS

(emotionally separating)

…HAVE TAKEN PART IN SOMETHING IRREVERSIBLE,

LIKE A TEAR THAT’S CRIED DIRECTLY INTO THE SEA.

THE MIRROR DOESN'T LIE (AND NEITHER DO I.)

NARCISSUS + ECHOSIS

(w/ joy and pain)

HOW CAN THIS BE…?

ECHOSIS

(BE)LIEVE ME,

WHEN YOU FIND OUT WHO I AM, YOU’LL MIND.

NARCISSUS

YOU’RE MINE NOW.

ECHOSIS

(exhausted by Narcissus ignorance)

HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THROUGH THE ILLUSION?

NARCISSUS

IT’S YOU I WANT!

ECHOSIS

IT’S TRUE THAT SOME

(Echosis begins slowly wiping the light off her face, reveals her true identity as Echo)

DREAMS LAST FOR TOO LONG.

(Narcissus is stunned)

(demanding eye contact from Narcissus)

LET ME CAST YOU OFF.

(Narcissus quickly turns away in fear)

NARCISSUS

(in denial)

MY MIRROR WON’T EVER BREAK.

ECHOSIS

(to herself)

AS THE MIRROR BREAKS,…

NARCISSUS

(angery)

I’M NOT GOING TO BREAK AGAIN.

ECHOSIS

I AM LEFT WITH…

NARCISSUS

(bargening)

FOREVER WITHIN A GAZE.

ECHOSIS

SOMETHING I HAD NOT EXPECTED.

NARCISSUS

(a sudden wave of depression, as reality sets in)

FOREVER WON’T EVER END.

NARCISSUS + ECHOSIS

(acceptance!)

LEAVE OR STAY, EITHER WAY, IT’S AN

ECHOSIS + NARCISSUS

(alone together)

IMPRISONMENT IN LIQUID.

FOR EVEN IF

(Echosis turns her back to Narcissus)

ECHOSIS

I DON’T WANT TO GET WET.

(Amphora crash SFX, just like at the end of FACE OF LOVE.)

(Narcissus and Echosis freeze)

Scene 8

Hermes’ Finale

SETTING: The eternal gradient void.

(Narcissus and Echosis stand frozen with their backs to each other, heads down, oblivious to Hermes)

(Hermes enters and begins orbiting them)

HERMES

(To Narcissus)

BEFORE YOU LOOK INTO THE MIRROR,

YOU BETTER MAKE SURE THAT IT’S CLEAN.

(now to Echosis)

FOR THE FIRST THING YOU SAW

WILL TURN INTO A GOD.

(to both of them)

TO SEE IS TO BELIEVE.

(Hermes walks forward between them, towards front-center stage)

(exhausted by it all)

OH MY HEART GROWS WEARY NOW,

OF THE IGNORANCE OF MEN.

THE CURSE OF THE IMMORTAL IS TO WATCH THIS SAME SCENE PLAY ON WITHOUT END.

(with sublime acceptance of an impossible existence)

BUT IT’S A FAIR PRICE TO PAY,

OR SO THEY SAY.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW THE WAVES.

THE CIRCLE NEVER BREAKS,

AND THEY CANNOT ESCAPE.

(BLACKOUT)

(END OF ECHOSIS)
