NORTH HIGH SCHOOL
Frequently Asked Questions About Schedules
Students can take a course over the summer if it is pre-approved by the North High Counselor. A list of potential summer programs is posted to the Counselors Schoology Course that the student is enrolled in. Once a student decides what program they would like to take a course through, they must submit a Summer School Pre-Approval form to the summer programs assignment in Schoology.
The only course that North High offers in the summer is Geometry for students who are currently taking Algebra 1.
North High administration will communicate to students and parents the details of this program and how to sign up in late April or early May.
A Summer School Pre-Approval form is not required for the North High Summer Geometry program.
The North High Administration will send an email out to students and parents with the information about what is being offered and a form for students to submit if they are interested in taking one of the courses offered in the summer.
Please note that submission of the interest form does not guarantee enrollment.
Students should select courses for the following year as if they are not taking the class in the summer. Once students are approved to enroll in a Summer program, the North High staff will adjust their courses accordingly.
We offer several ECC Dual Enrollment partnership program courses that students can take through North High. This includes PLTW Intro to Engineering and Sports Therapy. See our Dual Enrollment page for more information.
Students can also take ECC courses through their regular offerings. Please note that many departments at ECC do not allow underclassmen to take courses through their regular program. For more information, please see their website:
https://www.elcamino.edu/academics/dual-enrollment/index.aspx
If a student wants to take an ECC course in the Summer through the ECC regular course offerings, they must follow the steps for enrollment on the Dual Enrollment website linked above AND submit a Summer School Pre-Approval Form to the Counselor’s Schoology course.
Students will need to select one of the available options (Beginning Dance, PE Band, PE 9, JROTC or Show Choir). Once tryouts occur, coaches will submit lists of students to be added to the sport, and the student’s schedule will be changed.
Students should visit the NHS Athletics website for more information: https://saxonathletics.com/
Coach contact information, summer program information, and other athletic forms can be found on this page. There will be a separate Athletics night in April- more information to come. Participating in the summer sport program, while helpful, DOES NOT guarantee acceptance to the related NHS sport team.
An Honors course is designated by an “Honors” (e.g., English 1 Honors) and it is an honors college preparatory course. These courses offer the same curriculum as the non-honors course, but cover some additional content and/or the same curriculum more in depth. Honors courses generally have more homework and are more fast-paced than a non-honors course.
Only certain courses are approved for an extra grade point by the UC/CSU system. For more information on what courses provided an extra grade point, see the North High UC A-G Course List:
https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist/institution/1268
An Advanced Placement course is designated by an “AP” (e.g., AP Biology) and it is a college level course developed by The College Board Corporation with curriculum found in corresponding courses at universities and colleges across the USA. 9th grade students are eligible to take AP Human Geography their freshman year.
The majority of Honors and AP courses require students to complete a summer assignment. A link to the summer assignments is available on the North High School website. Teachers will be updating their summer assignments prior to the end of the school year and they will be posted to our website on the home page.
Students will have an opportunity before the school year ends to verify their course selections and to request any changes. After that point, changes will not be allowed.
When students sign up to take an Honors or AP course, they are committing to taking the course for the full year. Students should make informed decisions when signing up for Honors/AP courses by reading the course descriptions, speaking to their current teachers, and discussing these course selections with their parents.
There will be an El Camino College Counselor specifically assigned to support the students in the Early College program. They will meet with students in the program to select the courses that will be completed at El Camino College as part of the Early College Four-Year Plan.
The ECC Counselor’s contact information can be found in the Counselor’s Schoology course.
