What is your plan for getting the city back to work, particularly in its hardest hit sectors? What kind of workforce development programs do you envision that would provide access to communities of color and people with disabilities? | I want to create a relief fund for those who have been out of work in addition to those that have already been created by the state and federal governments. I will host job fairs for those looking to get back to work and will only host companies that I know pay living wages and no subminimum wages for persons with disabilities. |
What is your plan for creating healthy stable communities? How do you envision enlivening vacant commercial and city owned spaces? | I want to work with the Land Use Committee and the Department of City Planning so that cultural spaces are factored into our overall city development plan. As part of that, I want to provide property tax breaks to landlords who rent to cultural spaces. |
What do you foresee is the role of creative economies in supporting economic recovery in New York City particularly for communities most affected by environmental, housing, and health instability due to COVID including our aging, immigrant, and working class communities of color? | I see them as being places that should be able to reopen as soon as possible (as long as it is safe). They provide avenues to express ones emotions and give commentary on our current situation. So, I want to provide economic relief so that studios, theatres, etc. can reopen as soon as possible and hire back employees. |
What is your plan for the city’s school system and what is your vision of the role that arts in education plays? | As a teacher, I know how intricately tied arts are to success in math and science. To that end, I want to bring back real art, music, and dance teachers to our schools so that our students have a creative outlet. And, so that students can be exposed to the arts, I will work to grow the existing partnerships with groups like the Broadway League and major museums so that students can both see shows and exhibits at little-to-no cost and/or have presentations brought to their schools. |
What is your plan to address the health care needs of the city's many communities? | I want to provide more funding to local clinics to stay open/open anew (especially clinics that we know work like Planned Parenthood). I want to provide more funding for mental health services. And I want to create a dialogue with the Health Committee and communities to know where there is a health care desert so we can work to address the issue. |
What are your plans for supporting incarcerated and formerly incarcerated New Yorkers? | I want to make sure that re-integration programs are properly funded and that people who were formerly incarcerated have good-paying jobs when they are released and mental health counselors to discuss their experiences with. Together, this will help reduce the chance at recidivism. To do that, I will try to look at small businesses and non-profits that need workers and will work to increase tax incentives for them to hire formerly incarcerated individuals. |
