American Flag Rose

In the Beginning

By 1776 and the War of Independence, around 2,000 Jews lived in America, most of them Sephardic Jews of Spanish and Portuguese origin. They played a significant role in the struggle for independence, including fighting the British, with Francis Salvador being the first Jew to die, and playing a key role in financing the revolution, with the most important of the financiers being Haym Solomon. The highest ranking Jewish officer of the Colonial forces was Colonel Mordecai Sheftall. Others, like David Salisbury Franks, despite loyal service in both the Continental Army and the American diplomatic corps, suffered from his association as aide-de-camp for the traitorous general Benedict Arnold.

President George Washington remembered the Jewish contribution when he wrote to the Sephardic congregation of Newport, Rhode Island, in a letter dated August 17, 1790: "May the children of the stock of Abraham who dwell in the land continue to merit and enjoy the goodwill of the other inhabitants. While everyone shall sit safely under his own vine and fig-tree and there shall be none to make him afraid.” (wiki)

Arakhin 17a-b: Kings Among Men

Who is the true leader? Does the leader’s behavior mold the behavior of the community or is it the community’s activities that affect the leadership?

In response to this question the Gemara on today’s daf discusses two of the last kings of Judea during the period of the first Temple. King Yoshiyahu was a righteous king, and two of his sons became king. The Gemara identifies his son Yehoyakim as a king who was not good, even though his generation was a virtuous one, and his other son Ẓidkiyahu as a virtuous king, even though the generation was evil.

In support of this position, the Gemara teaches:

For Rabbi Yoḥanan said in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai: What is the meaning of: “In the beginning of the reign of Yehoyakim, the son of Yoshiyahu, king of Judah”? The Holy One, Blessed be He, wanted to revert the world to chaos and void because of Yehoyakim, but when He considered his generation, His anger subsided. The Holy One, Blessed be He, wanted to revert the world to chaos and void because of the generation of Ẓidkiyahu, but when He considered Ẓidkiyahu, His anger subsided.

A Moment of BAN

G-d replied with flowers.

A Story – of coffee beans

An adolescent kid pour his heart to his father. He faces many challenges, and hardships of youths. Storms and crises are often present in his life. "How do you deal, Dad?" The child asked, "What should I do?"

The father chose to reply in a creative way. He led the kid into the kitchen, and placed three pots on the stove. In the first he put an egg, in the second carrots, and in the third pot he placed a handful coffee beans. The father lit the fire and left.

After a while the father returned with his child to the kitchen. He opened the first pot, took the egg and put on a plate. Took the lid off the second pot, took the carrot and put it in a bowl. Last he filtered the coffee from the third pot and poured it into

a cup.

Now he looked at the kid and and asked: "What do you see?"

The child approached the table and looked at the three products:

The carrots were soft and was crushed when he touched it. He peeled the egg, and it was hard. The coffee smelled wonderful and tasted good.

"Pay attention," the father said to his child, "the three different products teach us about different ways of coping with different situations in life. Each product was presented with same situation - it was placed in boiling water - but each came out differently:

The carrot entered the water hard and strong, and came out soft and crushed; The egg entered soft, and came out hard; But the coffee beans were different from both. After staying in the boiling water, they turn the water itself into something good, with a delicious fragrance.

To which one of the do you resemble?" The father asked his child. "When you face difficulties, when you are faced with challenges, how do you react, how you act, what guides you? Do you, like the carrot, looks strong on the outside, but actually loses strength and become soft, give up? Or do you like the egg lose all softness, look the same on the outside but your heart is hard? Or do you like the coffee beans, bring forth the best of you when actually reaching boiling point - challenges and difficulties are getting the best out of you and you energize your immediate environment?

***

Instill in our children the understanding that difficulties are not intended to take us down, but rather to help us grow.

Time to Smile

One woman heard that across the sea there is a special herb that if you drink from it you become young. So she called her son who was aboard and asked him to get her this very special herb drink.

After a few months the son came back home for a visit. At the airport he noticed that a woman with a stroller is looking at him. The woman approached him and said: “Shalom son. No hug for me?! I am your mom!”

The son was amazed: “Mom!? I didn’t recognize you. You look sooooo young!”

“Yes,” the mother said, smiling. “I know. It is the herb you sent me. I am sooooo happy!”

“Wow,that’s great” the son replied, “but mom, who is the baby in the stroller?”

“Well,” the mother sighed, “it’s dad... he drank the entire bottle.”

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Parasha: Qoraḥ - Bəmidbar (Numbers) 16:1-18:32

Parasha's Historical Context: Creation Time: Approx. 2449 (1475 bce). Bnei Israel 's 40-year journey continues. We are at Desert of Paran (Midbar Paran).

Parasha in Short: Qoraḥ, accompanied by Datan and Aviram, incites a mutiny challenging Moshe's leadership and the granting of the priesthood to Aharon. Joining them are 250 distinguished members of the community, who offer the sacred k’toret (incense) to prove their worthiness for the priesthood. The earth opens up and swallows the mutineers, and a fire consumes the k’toret offerers. A subsequent plague is stopped by Aharon's offering of k’toret. Aaron's staff miraculously blossoms and brings forth almonds to prove that his designation as High Priest is divinely ordained. G-d commands that a trumah ("uplifting") from each crop of grain, wine and oil, all firstborn sheep and cattle, and other specified gifts be given to the Kohanim. (chabad)

Maftir: Rosh Ḥodesh in B’midbar (Numbers) 28:9-15.

Haftara: Qoraḥ - Shmuel (Samuel) 11:14-12:22.

Haftit: Shaul, who is just about to become Israel's first King, commands the nation of Israel to go up to the City of Gilgal where he is to be anointed. Afterwards the Nation of Israel celebrates Shaul's coronation by giving peace offerings to Hashem. Samuel, Israel's last Judge then declares that he has fulfilled all the requests that the people of Israel have made of him, with emphasis on the recent appointment of Israel's first King. Now it has come time for Samuel to pass away. Samuel, who was only 52 at the time, claims that he has aged and feels very old, possibly as a result of his son's misdeeds. To pass away with a clear conscience, Samuel asks in front of Hashem and the King of Israel if there was anybody who could testify against him regarding any misdeeds he may have done. For example, had he taken any animals as payment for the work he has done for the community? Samuel continues to ask "Was there anyone whom he had cheated or was oppressed by him?" "Did anyone ever bribe him? Come forward!" The people of Israel responded, "You have been honest in all your dealings with us."

Connection to the Parasha: Samuel was an example of what the leader of Israel should be. He pulled everyone together to serve Hashem. On the other hand, Qoraḥ was a Levite who led the rebellion in the wilderness against Moses. The earth opened up and swallowed Qoraḥ and the other leaders of the rebellion. The reason for Qoraḥ's destruction was that his vision was to have each and every person in the nation of Israel be his or her own G-d. Needless to say Qoraḥ's vision was diametrically opposed to Samuel's belief in only one G-d. (Haftorhaman)

Speechless in the Parasha: Qoraḥ

The fifth, sixth, and seventh Aliyot talk about the Levites. What is the designation of the Levites; what work should they do; how will they make a living? And what is tithe?

Rav Question – שאלת רב

Is liberty the freedom to say that 2+2=4 or that 2+2=5?

Ḥodesh Tammuz Tov!

We entered the month of Tammuz, the 10th month in the Jewish calendar and the 4th month in the Biblical calendar. In the Bible, this month is referred to as "the Fourth Month"(Jeremiah 39:2), counting from Nisan which is “the First Month" (Exodus 40:17).

"Tammuz" is the Babylonian name of this month, as are the names of other months in the Hebrew Calendar. The name Tammuz seems to have been derived from the Akkadian form “Tammuzi” which is based on the early Sumerian “Damu-zid” meaning a “flawless youth.”  In Mesopotamia Tammuz was a god of fertility, embodying the powers for new life in nature during the spring. The idol Tammuz is mentioned once in the Bible in which Yehezkel rebukes those who worship the Babylonian idol, Tammuz (Yehezkel 8:14). (wiki, ou.org +)

What's in a Name? Qoraḥ

The Biblical Qoraḥ is one figure in a gallery of Biblical villains. He was severely punished for daring to foment a rebellion against the leadership of Moses. Some Rabbinic authorities were also of the opinion that he has no share in the world to come.

In Rabbinic sources, the sons of Qoraḥ are said to have repented and they hold an exalted position in the Jewish narrative. Many of the compositions found in the book of Psalms are attributed to the sons of Qoraḥ.

Today the name Qoraḥ doesn't appear as a proper name but it does appear as a surname. There is a prominent Rabbinic family of Yemenite origin in Israel with the surname Qoraḥ. The most well known member of this family is Rabbi Shlomo Qoraḥ, Sephardi Chief Rabbi of B’nei B’rak. The tradition maintained in this family of Levites is that they are directly descended of the Biblical Qoraḥ. Apparently there are also Ashkenazic Jews with the surname Qoraḥ. Kids: Levi. * Teenagers: 14,700 besides those who died because of the matter of Qoraḥ. * Adults: Until the next day.  * Experts: 85 times * Professionals: The “sign” of the month is “Sartan,” “Cancer,” or “The Crab,” because a constellation which is observed at this time of year has the appearance of a crab. Also, the season is summer, and the hot weather of summer causes crabs to multiply in the water. Crabs pinch and hurt, and this month was basically a time in which the Jewish People were hurt.
