Changes to Student Account Names in Google Starting This September

Since the introduction of Google tools in SD61, student account names have followed a formula that includes their first name, last initial and the last four digits of their student number. Starting in September all student accounts will be based exclusively on student numbers. This change is required for integration with other accounts that students use. We will be providing clear guidance regarding this change in the new school year.

Password Reuse=Major Headaches

There are over 11 billion leaked emails and passwords available on the web, you can check yours here. Reusing passwords puts you at risk and can lead to endless encounters with elevator muzak, and other dreadful consequences.

Password reuse, including use of similar passwords with minor differences, has led to several serious incidents of staff accounts being captured by criminals this year. Once crooks have seized an account they can use it to launch scams, access confidential data and gain control of other vital accounts.

Don’t be the next victim. Use a unique password for your district account, change it regularly, and do the same for your most important personal accounts.

New Digital Tools Coming in September

Privacy scans & consent forms are in the works for several new digital tools that will be available in September. Included on the list are: CommonLit, Quizlet, Desmos, EquatIO, DuoLingo, myBlueprint, NFB Campus TextHelp’s Fluency Tutor, Padlet and Lexia Learning.

We also hope to have the following tools ready for consent later in the fall: goFormative, Current4Kids, Newsela and CSFirst.

TECH TIPS

Gone Camping?

Whether you are out for just a few days, or for the whole glorious summer you can set up an automatic “Out of Office” message for your GVSD email. Check out the instructions here.

If another staff member will be looking after your mail you can forward it to them, as long as you use their district email account as the forwarding address.

Set It and Forget It

It is difficult to remember your MyEd password in September, so create a MyEd Password Reset Question now to avoid having to make that Help Desk call. See Details here.

Note: MyED BC will be unavailable from August 5-16 for annual, province-wide End-of-Year processes.
