10 Ways to Get Involved!

We are an open-source project on the Web that is a home for creating apps for over 25 million students and their teachers. Our goal is to enable anyone, regardless of prior programming experience, to code almost any Android or iOS app for free using a simple, intuitive, block-based programming language. (We need a lot of help to continue this mission!)

Make a Gift to Support Our Work!

MIT App Inventor will always be free, but the continued development of our platform, including the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics capabilities, as well as the creation of new teaching tools and curricula, requires significant resources. We’re always grateful for any support you can offer!

Become a Sponsor
The MIT App Inventor team welcomes collaborations with education-focused organizations, companies, and foundations worldwide. Please contact us at
mit-app-inventor-collaboration@mit.edu with your idea or short proposal.

Contribute to Our Open-Source Code

Our open-source code makes it easy to create a pull request on our public GitHub repository. Many of the components you see in App Inventor are the result of work by volunteer users and students around the world. There is also extension development available for those who prefer not to be constrained by our release process and schedule.

Join the Google Summer of Code

Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global online program that connects students with open-source organizations for a 12+ week coding project. Participants work under the guidance of mentors, gaining experience in open source development and earning a stipend. MIT App Inventor is often selected as an organization in GSoC. For more information, please refer to our recent post on the community forum.

Become a Research Collaborator

We regularly collaborate with researchers across universities. We can also provide anonymized user data, upon request, to researchers pursuing studies in learning engineering or K-12 CS education. Please tell us of your interest in the program by sending a note with “Research Collaboration” in the subject line to: appinventor@mit.edu,

Help Our Community Forum

Students interested in collaborating with MIT App Inventor are encouraged to participate through our global community forum. If you have some experience with App Inventor, you can help those new to the platform by answering basic questions and guiding novices through their projects. We do not have opportunities for K-12 students at universities other than MIT to join the MIT project as interns.

Follow the App Inventor Foundation

MIT App Inventor is a research project hosted at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. There is also the non-profit App Inventor Foundation, which is independent of MIT. Visit appinventorfoundation.org for news and information about the foundation.

Join the App Inventor Educator Collaborative

The App Inventor Educator Collaborative is a new initiative designed to empower the next generation with critical AI & data science skills using the App Inventor platform. The program is free of charge and open to U.S.-based grade 6-12 teachers. By joining the program, you will gain access to free and open-source curricula, professional development, and a community of practice that fosters collaboration among educators through virtual and in-person forums.

Be an On-Call Educator Collaborator

Learn about the MIT App Inventor curricula still in development and have a significant impact on the final version! Please tell us of your interest in the program by sending a note with “On-Call Educator Collaborator” in the subject line to appinventor@mit.edu,

Become an App Inventor Expert Trainer

The Expert Trainers program, which typically accepts 25 participants annually, has been in abeyance in recent years. Please tell us of your interest in the program by sending a note with “Expert Trainers Program” in the subject line to appinventor@mit.edu,

Please note: Regarding requests for the App Inventor team to share a perspective on the future of AI.

We’re grateful for your interest. However, our team is at capacity right now, adding AI features to App Inventor (chatbot, image classification, body landmark detection, and more!) Unfortunately, we are unable to schedule calls or answer emails regarding AI. We appreciate your interest in our work and would love to see what you can do, for instance, at an upcoming AI Hackathon.
