PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

It was a long summer--that’s what happens when you get out on June 7th!  For kids, this may mean one of two things--they are extremely ready to get back to school and are chomping at the bit to see their friends and get back to the routine OR they are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and scared about coming back because the routine seems so long ago and they aren’t sure how they are going to adjust.

That first group of kids was me as a kid--I was the one who had her school supplies labeled and backpack packed a week in advance.  This surprises absolutely no one who knows me and certainly is one factor that has led me to a career in education.  (And, since I’m being honest here, this is still me…my Amazon cart is currently full of sharpies and post its.)

My kid, on the other hand, is in the other group--the coming out of her room later than she should be three weeks before school starts all teary eyed because she is scared that her new teacher won’t like her or her friends won’t want to hang out anymore group.  And that is tough as a parent--because it is a knife in the heart to see your kid upset.

And the truth is, there may be rocky points during the school year.  Friendships change, school work sometimes can be overwhelming, people make mistakes.  But one thing that I want all of you to know as parents is that we, like you, want all of our kids to have a great year.  Our big wish for every kid this year is that when they wake up on the last day of school this year, that, while they are excited for the summer, they are also sad that the year has ended.  On the last day of school this year, we want them to walk out of here knowing that there are people here who know them well, who understand them, and most importantly, who love them.

On Tuesday when we welcome your kids for the first day, please know that they are in good hands.  We will be here to support them, to cheer them on, to encourage and challenge them, and to love them every step of the way.

WHAT’S NEW AT HMMS?

Times and Bus Route Schedules

As we told you in June, the school day will be different at HMMS this year.  School starts at 7:50 this year, and doors will open before school at 7:30am.  Please do not drop off your students prior to 7:30 as we will not be providing supervision until that time.  The school day ends at 2:50 with the dismissal of walkers and car riders and bus students.  Buses should be leaving the school parking lot around 2:55.  There will be no afternoon busroom.  The new bus routes can be found on the district website: hsdvt.com.

Calling 6th grade Girls Soccer and Field Hockey Players

Due to lower numbers than usual, we are opening HMMS girls soccer and field hockey to any girls who would like to play.  Please register at hmmsvt.com by clicking the Register Online for Sports icon!  First practices are scheduled to begin Wednesday August 28th!
