‘PICKING UP’ and RECORDING OF SCORES
2023 GAME DESCRIPTIONS
STEP ASIDE SCRAMBLE: Four-person team event in which each player hits her tee shot, and the best shot is selected. The person whose shot is selected does not play the next shot. All other players then play the next shot from the position or the selected ball. The same procedure is used on all shots until the ball is on the green. All players putt.
RED, WHITE & YELLOW: Four-person teams. Use 3 Net scores on Red Flag holes, 2 Net Scores on White Flag holes, and 1 Net Score on Yellow Flag holes. You may pick up if your score will not be used.
COUNT 4’s: Count your score on all the par 4’s and record your low net score on those holes. On par 3’s and 5’s, you may pick up.
T’s AND F’s: Individual best net score for holes starting with the letter T and F—holes 2, 3, 10, 12, and 13 (T’s) and 4, 5, 14, and 15 (F’s). You may pick up on holes 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 16, 17, and 18.
HATE ‘EM: Before the round begins, each golfer selects 3 holes to throw out at the end of the round. The three holes must include one par-3, one par-4, and one par-5. You may pick up on those three holes.
SOLHEIM: Two-person team. Holes 1-6 Scramble. Holes 7-12 Best Ball Net. Holes 13-18 Modified Alternate Shot—both players tee off on each hole, select the best drive and alternate with one ball until holed out. You may pick up on the best ball segment if your score will not be used.
15/20: This is a game that permits threesomes to compete evenly with foursomes. Each team must choose which individual net scores it will use after completion of the hole (and before teeing off on the next hole). A threesome must use a total of 15 scores on each nine and a foursome must use 20 on each side. The scores will be added up and divided by the number of players on the team for the final score. Keep a running score relative to par. At the end of play, divide your score (relative to par) by the number of players on the team. Three players with +1 is 0.333. Four players with a +1 is 0.25. You may pick up if your team agrees that your score will not be used for the hole.
STASH THE TRASH: Throw out 2 holes on the front and 2 holes on the back nine for a total of 4 scores that don’t count for the game. Pick throw-out holes after the game. You may pick up on two holes on front and two holes on back (those must be your throw-out holes).
CRUSH CANCER SCRAMBLE: Two-person scramble. Record the team scramble score for the game.
WALTZ 1-2-3: Foursome mixed team, use one net score on the first hole, two net scores on the second hole, and three net scores on the third hole. Repeat this order throughout the remainder of the holes, one on the fourth, two on the fifth, three on the sixth, etc. You may pick up if your score will not be used on the hole.
SWEET AND SOUR: Count 12 lowest net scores + 2 highest net scores. Any hole you pick up on may not be used for the play day game score.
NET STABLEFORD (4-Person): One four-person team. On each hole, the best two of the four net scores will be totaled and recorded for the team score. Points are awarded based on net score – Bogey = 1, Par = 2, Birdie = 3, Eagle = 4, and Double Eagle = 8. You may pick up if your points are 0 (when you know your net score will be double bogey or greater).
LOW NET ODDS/LOW GROSS EVENS (PYP): Record your low net score on holes 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17. Record your low gross scores on holes 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18. You may pick up if you know your partner’s score will be lower than yours.
2 L0W NET: Four-person team. Total the best two net scores on each hole for your team score. You may pick up if your score will not be used.
MARGARET GRIFFIN INVITATIONAL: Partner best ball event, low gross/low net.
PICK NINE HOLES: After play, pick nine holes out of the 18 holes as your score for the game. Pick two par-3 holes, five par-4 holes, and two par-5 holes. You may pick up on holes that will not be used for the game.
PLAY IT FORWARD (LOW NET STROKE): Play the forward-most (orange) tees. Individual scoring using net score on each hole. To be eligible for points, you may not pick up on any hole.
NET BEST BALL: Two-person teams. Use the best net score on each hole. You may pick up if you know your score will not be used for the game.
ECLECTIC: Day one—record your net score for each of the 18 holes. Day two—replay the same 18 holes and record your net score for each hole. For each hole, select the lowest score from the two rounds for your eclectic score. On day one, if you pick up, you will be forced to use day two’s score on that hole for your eclectic game. On day two, you may pick up when your score will not improve on day one’s score.
If you can play only one round, that round’s score is your eclectic score.
30/40: This is a game that permits threesomes to compete evenly with foursomes. Each team must choose which individual net scores it will use after the completion of the hole (and before teeing off on the next hole). Over the 18 holes, a threesome should circle a total of 30 scores and a foursome should circle a total of 40 scores. Keep a running score relative to par. At the end of play, divide your score (relative to par) by the number of players on the team. Three players with +1 is 0.333. Four players with a +1 is 0.25. You may pick up if your team agrees that your score will not be used for the hole
LUCK OF THE IRISH: Count one ball on holes 1 - 8, count two balls on holes 9 - 15, count three balls on holes 16 -18. You may pick up if your score will not be used.
INDIVIDUAL STABLEFORD: On each hole, record points based on your net score on the hole. Points are awarded based on net score – Bogey = 1, Par = 2, Birdie = 3, Eagle = 4, and Double Eagle = 8. You may pick up if points are 0 (when you know your net score will be double bogey or greater).
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: This pick-your-partner game is a Modified Scotch game. Players A and B hit their tee shots and select which drive they want to use, then play alternate shot into the hole. If player A’s tee shot is chosen, player B must hit the next shot and they continue alternating shots into the hole. If player B’s tee shot is chosen, player A must hit the next shot and they continue to alternate shots into the hole. You may not pick up.
THROW OUT 5’s (TEAM): Four-person teams/2 low net. All holes count for the game except for the par 5’s. Use the best two low net balls of the four-person team for scoring. You may pick up on par 5’s. You may pick up if your score will not be used for the game.
MEMBER /MEMBER: Pick your partner and play five 9-hole match play rounds. Three matches are played on the first day and two on the second day. Sign-up details will be published later.
LOW GROSS/LOW NET: Record low gross and low net scores on each hole. If you pick up, you will not be eligible for points.
LOW GROSS/LOW NET CHAMPIONSHIP: Individual game. Record your gross and net scores. No pick-ups.
NOTES:
CPU: CPU means you can pick up. You are not required to pick up, but you MAY if you are out of the game on a hole that does not count toward the play day game. You are actually encouraged to pick up if your group has fallen behind.
If you see Y/S in the CPU column, you may pick up if you are not counting the score for that day’s game. NA in the CPU column means ‘not applicable’. SEE GAME DESCRIPTIONS FOR EACH PLAY DAY FOR MORE DETAILED PICK UP EXPLANATIONS.
AB: This is an individual game in which all A players play together and all B players play together. Letters are listed in the order of play – as in this example A players will tee off first and B second. If BA then B players tee off first and A second.
aabb: This is a four-person team consisting of two players from each flight.
aa/bb: This is a foursome consisting of two 2-person teams. The two A flight players will play as a two-person team and the two B flight players will play as a two-person team in the same foursome.
aa/aa: This is a foursome consisting of two 2-person teams, both teams coming from the A group.
bb/bb: This is a foursome consisting of two 2-person teams, both teams coming from the B group.
