POST-LABIAPLASTY SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS
***PLEASE NOTE***
These instructions are to be followed as a general guideline. Any changes to the instructions will be discussed with you by Dr. Petersen.
FILL PRESCRIPTIONS specified by Dr. Petersen or his staff. Make sure you inform Dr. Petersen of any prescription or over the counter medicines that you are taking to prevent drug interactions.
- Do not take any aspirin or aspirin-like medications (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, etc.) for 2 weeks post-op. These drugs cause bleeding. If you have any questions concerning any medications, contact Dr. Petersen.
- Smoking causes wound healing problems. It can cause significant breakdown of the incisions and loss of skin. It is required that the patients stop smoking for 6 weeks following the surgery.
- Leave post-operative dressings and ace bandages or elastic compression in place until your post-operative appointment or as directed by Dr. Petersen.
- Sponge bathe for the first 48 hours or until Dr. Petersen says you can shower. You may shower 48 hours after surgery. Keep incisions clean, dry and inspect daily for signs of infection. Were absorbent pads or feminine napkins to absorb any drainage. Some oozing and drainage are expected. No baths, hot tubs, or swimming for 6 weeks after surgery. Place clean, dry dressings over incisions to wick away moisture and to prevent irritation from undergarments and clothing. You should apply Bacitracin antibiotic ointment to the incision area 3 times a day for 3 days.
- There will be swelling and discoloration for 1-2 weeks, possibly longer. There initially may be numbness around the area. There may be postoperative pain. Watch for active bleeding, extensive bruising, or abnormal swelling or pain, particularly if one side of the labia or one area becomes much more swollen, discolored, or painful than the other. (Small differences in swelling and pain are commonly seen). Chills, fever, or drug reactions such as, rash, nausea, headache, vomiting are also of concern. Contact Dr. Petersen if: you have an oral temperature over 100.4 degrees; if you have increasing yellowish or greenish drainage from the incisions or notice a foul odor; if you have extensive swelling or bruising; or if you have bleeding from the incisions that is difficult to control with light pressure. Scars will be reddened for 3 months. After that, they will gradually fade and soften.
- If an appointment time was not given to you, please call the office to schedule your follow up visit.
- No exercising, intimacy, lifting, heavy exertion, heavy housework, etc. for 6 weeks. Too much activity can cause excessive bleeding, implant displacement, and/or swelling. Walk as soon as possible, as this helps reduce swelling and lowers the chance of blood clots. You should plan to walk around the house every 1-2 hours throughout the day and the first night following surgery. Do not drive until you are no longer taking narcotic pain medications. No lifting greater than 5 pounds for one week. No intimacy for 6 weeks, then resume sexual activity as comfort permits. No swimming for 6 weeks. Return to social and employment activities as you are able for some this may be up to 1-2 weeks. Physical therapy is not necessary after this procedure.
- If for any reason the patient becomes unresponsive, delirious, or you feel something is seriously wrong and needs immediate attention, call 911 and/or go immediately to the nearest ER.
