FINAL DRAFT 2018-04-01
@bswolf
March 2016 - March 2018
Short link: bit.ly/phantom-disney
This is a parody of both Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera and many (mostly animated) film musicals (27 by Disney, 2 by DreamWorks), where the former's songs have been rewritten to tunes from the latter. Namely, the main Phantom songs and those of Don Juan are from Disney movies, while those of Hannibal and Il Muto come from the DreamWorks movies (and one Fox movie, without lyrics).
Nearly every tune was chosen to draw a parallel between it and the context in Phantom. For every tune, some of its lyrics appear in the Phantom rewrite. For many, entire lines work very very well. You'll see! :)
This work would not have been possible without the support, inspiration, feedback, and singing/editing from many people. I would especially like to thank Meg J. for her copious, thorough notes, feedback, and patient editing, for which I am greatly indebted; Jenee for singing through rough drafts with me, making suggestions, and encouragement in general; the friends whose boundless enthusiasm for Disney songs got so many of them stuck in my head in the first place; and the composers and authors of the original works here, particularly Howard Ashman, Alan Menken, Charles Hart, Richard Stilgoe, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Gaston Leroux.
The tune to which characters are singing is denoted by "[Song Title]" underneath a character's name. Other characters continue with the same song until another song is listed, or until the next Phantom of the Opera song.
A character that is speaking in the middle of a song will have "[speaking]" or similar after their name. Note that this is distinct from spoken sections of certain Disney songs. Also, many speaking sections are replicated (more or less) from the original Phantom of the Opera scripts and do not require [speaking] labels.
Songs here are not always 1:1 with the original tune; some will repeat, omit, halve, or reorder stanzas; or start in the middle; or add stanzas from the soundtrack version; etc. For the most part it should be straightforward to determine the rhythm of each section; in some cases it's noted which source stanza to repeat or start with. In a few cases it made sense to add (or remove) extra syllables as pickup notes—where I thought clarification necessary, I put the extra syllables in (parentheses), even when part of a word.
Finally, I have drawn Phantom lyrics both from the original cast recording and from the 2004 Schumacher movie (and made up my own to fill space, of course), but in some cases (such as scene order) I sided with the movie version because it makes more sense to me.
Enjoy.

AUCTIONEER
Twenty-five, thank you, madame. Thirty? Selling at thirty, then. Thirty once... twice... sold for thirty francs to the Vicomte de Chagny. Thank you, sir.
RAOUL
[You'll Be In My Heart - Refrain]
Collector's piece indeed
Every detail as she said
Your velvet lining
And your figure of lead
She often spoke of you
No matter what I'd say
When we're all dead, will you
Still play?
AUCTIONEER
Lot 666, then: a chandelier in pieces. Some of you may recall the strange affair of the Phantom of the Disney—a mystery never fully explained. We are told, ladies and gentlemen, that this is the very chandelier which figures in the famous disaster. Our workshops have restored it and fitted up parts of it with wiring for the new electric light, so that we may get a hint of what it may look like when reassembled. Perhaps we may frighten away the ghost of so many years ago with a little illumination. Gentlemen?
[Overture...?]
[Deliver Us]
MEN'S CHORUS
With the song of Carthage on our trumpets
With the beat of the march on our drums
Romans now, hear our sound
Hark our step upon the ground
We condemn
You will tremble
The trumpets sound!
Hear the drums
We shake the ground!
As we come
To save our home from your spear, sword, and lance
Victorious
We shall be should you fight us
With Hannibal, you don't stand a chance...
ELISSA (CARLOTTA)
My friends, set your eyes upon this prize
It's a sign to realize:
Our saviors have returned
And they have delivered us! [begins vocalizing]
GIRL'S CHORUS
We celebrate
All tonight
Commemorate
With delight
The bonds of slavery were denied their chance
ALL
We celebrate
Hannibal's return to us!
Don't hesitate
To enjoy the dance
HANNIBAL (PIANGI)
Sad to discover
At homecoming time
The threat posed by Roma's grasping reach
REYER [interrupting after Piangi's "Roma" mistake]
Gentlemen, gentlemen...
LEFEVRE
Rehearsals, as you see, are under way, for a new production of Chalumeau's "Hannibal".
REYER
Monsieur Lefevre, I am rehearsing.
LEFEVRE
Monsieur Reyer, Madame Giry, ladies and gentlemen,
Please if I could have your attention, thank you.
As you know, for some weeks there have been rumours of my imminent retirement.
I can now tell you that these were all true—
CARLOTTA
Ah-ha!
LEFEVRE
—and it is my pleasure to introduce you to the two gentlemen who now own the Opera Disney: Monsieur Richard Firmin and Monsieur Gilles Andre.
I'm sure you have read of their recent fortune amassed in the junk business.
ANDRE
Scrap metal, actually.
CHORUS GIRL [whispering to another]
They must be rich.
FIRMIN
And we are deeply honored to introduce our new patron,
ANDRE
The Vicomte de Chagny.
CHRISTINE [whispering to MEG]
It's Raoul. Before my father died at the house by the sea,
I guess you could say we were childhood sweethearts. He called me Little Lotte.
MEG [whispering to CHRISTINE]
Christine, he's so handsome.
RAOUL
My parents and I are honored to support all the arts, especially the world-renowned Opera Disney.
LEFEVRE
Vicomte, gentlemen, Signora Carlotta Giudicelli, our leading soprano for five seasons.
PIANGI
Brava! Brava!
LEFEVRE
Signor Ubaldo Piangi.
RAOUL
An honor, signor. I believe I am keeping you from your rehearsal.
I will be here this evening to share in your great triumph. My apologies, monsieur.
REYER
Thank you, monsieur le Vicomte!
Once more if you please, signora.
CARLOTTA
He loves me. He loves me. Love me, love me, love me.
CHRISTINE
He wouldn't recognize me.
MEG
He didn't see you.
GIRY
If you please, monsieur.
[The ballet continues while they step aside to watch.]
We take particular pride in the excellence of our ballet, monsieur.
ANDRE
I see why, especially that little blond angel.
GIRY
My daughter, Meg Giry.
FIRMIN
And that exceptional beauty, no relation, I trust?
GIRY
Christine Daaé. Promising talent, Monsieur Firmin, very promising.
ANDRE
Daaé, did you say? No relation to the famous Swedish violinist?
GIRY
His only child. Orphaned at 7 when she came to live and train in the ballet dormitories.
FIRMIN
An orphan, you say?
GIRY
I think of her as a daughter also. Gentlemen, if you would kindly step to one side.
CHORUS
[final lines of Deliver Us]
You'll know it's us
By the trumpets of elephants!
When you hear our sound, then you will tremble
Now hear the drums! Here comes Hannibal!
CARLOTTA [speaking, frustrated]
All day!
All they want is the dancing!
LEFEVRE
Well, the Vicomte is very excited about tonight's gala.
CARLOTTA
A-ha-ha, allora, allora, allora.
I hope he is as excited about dancing girls as your new managers,
Because I will not be singing!
Andiamo, tutti! No, it's finito, finished. Get my doggy, bring my doggy, bye-bye.
ANDRE
What do we do?
LEFEVRE
Grovel. Grovel, grovel.
FIRMIN
Right.
ANDRE
Principessa! Bella diva!
CARLOTTA
Sì! Sì! Sì!
FIRMIN
Goddess of song!
CARLOTTA
È vero.
ANDRE
Monsieur Reyer, isn't there a rather marvelous aria for Elissa in Act 3 of "Hannibal"?
FIRMIN
Perhaps the signora—
CARLOTTA
Yes, yes, yes, ma no!
Cause I have not my costume for Act 3, because somebody not finish it!
And I hate my hat!
FIRMIN
But, I wonder, signora, as a personal favor, if you'll oblige us with a private rendition?
Unless, of course, Monsieur Reyer objects?
CARLOTTA
No, aspetta, aspetta.
If my managers command...
Monsieur Reyer?
REYER
If my diva commands?
CARLOTTA
Yes, I do. Everybody, very quiet!
ANDRE
Monsieur Lefevre, why exactly are you retiring?
LEFEVRE
My health.
ANDRE
I see.
REYER
Signora?
CARLOTTA
Maestro.
[When You Believe]
CARLOTTA [an octave higher]
Think of me someday
Long after we have said farewell
Reminisce but now and then
Please promise me you'll try
Our love was not unchanged—
[a piece of scenery falls and knocks Carlotta over, pinning her to the stage.]
REYER
Oh my god, Signora!
CARLOTTA
I hate you!
Lift it up!
MEG
He's here. The Phantom of the Disney.
LEFEVRE
Signora, are you alright? Buquet, for God's sake, man, what is going on up there?
BUQUET
Please, monsieur, don't look at me. As God's my witness, I was not at my post.
Please, monsieur, there's no one there. Or if there is, well then... It must be a ghost.
ANDRE
Signora, these things do happen.
CARLOTTA
For the past three years, "these things do happen." And did you stop them from happening? No!
[To ANDRE and FIRMIN] And you two! You are as bad as him! "These things do happen"? Ugh! Until you stop these things from happening, this thing does not happen! Ubaldo! Andiamo! Bring my doggy and my boxy!
PIANGI
Amateurs.
CARLOTTA
Bye-bye, ciao! Now you see, bye-bye, I'm really leaving.
LEFEVRE
Gentlemen, good luck. If you need me, I shall be in Australia.
ANDRE
Signora Giudicelli, she will be coming back, won't she?
GIRY
You think so, monsieur? I have a message, sir, from the Disney ghost.
FIRMIN
Oh, God in heaven, you're all obsessed.
GIRY [reading]
He welcomes you to his opera house—
FIRMIN
"His" opera house?
GIRY
—and commands that you continue to leave Box Five empty for his use, and reminds you that his salary is due.
FIRMIN
His salary?
GIRY
Well, Monsieur Lefevre used to give him 20,000 francs a month.
FIRMIN
20,000 francs?!
GIRY
Perhaps you can afford more with the Vicomte as your patron?
FIRMIN
Madame, I had hoped to make that announcement public tonight when the Vicomte was to join us for the gala. But obviously, [rips the note in two] we shall now have to cancel as it appears we have lost our star!
ANDRE
Surely there must be an... understudy!
REYER
Understudy?
There is no understudy for La Carlotta!
FIRMIN
A full house, Andre! We shall have to refund a full house!
GIRY
Christine Daaé could sing it, sir.
ANDRE
What, a chorus girl? Don't be silly!
GIRY
She has been taking lessons from a great teacher.
ANDRE
Who?
CHRISTINE
I don't know his name, monsieur.
GIRY
Let her sing for you, monsieur. She has been well taught.
ANDRE
All right. Come on. Don't be shy. Just... Just...
REYER
From the beginning of the aria, then please, mademoiselle.
FIRMIN
Andre, this is doing nothing for my nerves.
ANDRE
Well, she's very pretty.
CHRISTINE
[When You Believe]
Think of me someday
Long after we have said farewell
Reminisce but now and then
Please promise me you'll try
Our love was not unchanged
As though we could e'er be so still
We were moving mountains when
They stood up in our way
Think of the miracles we've shared and seen
Though love may fail, it never dies
And when you wish again your heart be free
Remember me
Whene'er you find
Some time to think of me
[She continues in the live performance in full costume]
Think of what we'd say
In case we’d ever meet again
Imagine me imagine you
While silently resigned
Or think of how I'll wake
With gloomy thoughts I can't explain
Imagine how I'd seek the strength
To put you from my mind
Think of the many things I shared with you
Don't think of how it might have been.
Look back on all those times when love was true.
There'll never be
A day so blue
When I won't think of you!
RAOUL [repeating the refrain]
Is that a girl I know? Is that Christine?
[speaking] Bravo!
Though last we spoke, so long ago
How young and innocent, we were pristine
Yet she may not
Remember me
But I recall Christine.
CHRISTINE [final refrain]
We made some memories, so never fear
Though flowers fade, and seasons pass
Who knows what memories we'll have next year?
I'll hold these dear
And all I ask:
Please swear you'll think
[Vocalizes at many different pitches]
Of me!
PHANTOM
Brava, brava, bravissima...
MEG
Christine, Christine...
PHANTOM [echoing]
Christine...
MEG
[Colors Of The Wind (including intro)]
Where in the world were you hiding?
For your voice was so fantastic,
You really were perfect!
But still I cannot see
How you learned so speedily
Who is this secret tutor I don't know?
CHRISTINE
I don't know...
My father spoke of some angel of music
I used to dream that someday he'd appear
But I now know he's here, an unseen genius
As I sing, I can sense him, and he's near
MEG
I think, Christine, you must have still been dreaming
Stories like this one simply can't come true
Today, Christine, you're talking much in riddles
And it's more unlike you than I ever knew
CHRISTINE
Have you ever heard your name called in an empty room
Or been critiqued by spirits while you sing?
Either they are only voices I imagine
Or an angel deigns to teach me everything
Oh, an angel came to teach me everything
MEG [skip to "How high"]
How white your face suddenly grows!
And your hands, Christine, have become so cold!
CHRISTINE
Must I always hear my name called in an empty room
No matter whether loud or soft I sing
Angel, grant me all your glory, faith, and wisdom
Angel, hide no longer, teach me in person
Oh, he's with me even now
And it frightens me somehow
MEG
Don't be frightened of what only was the wind
ANDRE
A tour de force! No other way to describe it!
FIRMIN
What a relief! Not a single refund!
MME. FIRMIN
Greedy.
ANDRE
Richard, I think we've made quite a discovery in Miss Daaé!
FIRMIN (to RAOUL, indicating CHRISTINE's dressing room)
Here we are, Monsieur le Vicomte.
RAOUL
Gentlemen, if you wouldn't mind, this is one visit I should prefer to make unaccompanied.
[He takes the champagne from FIRMIN.]
ANDRE
As you wish, monsieur.
FIRMIN
They appear to have met before...
RAOUL
Christine Daaé, where is your scarf?
CHRISTINE
Monsieur?
RAOUL
You can't have lost it. After all the trouble I took. I was just fourteen and soaked to the skin...
CHRISTINE
Because you had run into the sea to fetch my scarf. Oh, Raoul. So it is you!
RAOUL
Christine.
[They embrace and laugh. She moves away and sits at her dressing table.]
RAOUL
[Once Upon A Dream]
Li'l Lotte
She let her mind wander in daydream
CHRISTINE [speaking]
You remember that, too...
RAOUL
Li'l Lotte
Thought: Am I fonder of dolls
BOTH
or goblins or shoes?
RAOUL [speaking]
Those picnics in the attic...
CHRISTINE [speaking]
Father playing the violin...
RAOUL [speaking]
As we read to each other dark stories of the North...
CHRISTINE [Once Upon a Dream - Final Refrain]
What's best, Lotte said
The Angel of Music in my dreams
Asleep in my bed
BOTH
Sing songs in my head
I knew you at once
The way it was once
Upon a dream
[speaking]
RAOUL
You sang like an angel tonight.
CHRISTINE
Father said, "When I'm in heaven, child, I will send the Angel of Music to you." Well, father is dead, Raoul, and I have been visited by the Angel of Music.
RAOUL
No doubt of it. And now we go to supper.
CHRISTINE
No, Raoul, the Angel of Music is very strict.
RAOUL
Well, I shan't keep you up late!
CHRISTINE
No, Raoul...
RAOUL
You must change. I'll order my carriage. Two minutes, Little Lotte.
[He hurries out]
CHRISTINE
Raoul, wait! ...Things have changed, Raoul.
PHANTOM
[Reflection]
Insolence!
This slave of fashion, with empty praise,
basking in your glory!
Ignorance!
Why let him share my triumph?
CHRISTINE
Angel please
My soul was weak, please stay by my side
Enter now at last, Master!
PHANTOM
Know me, my flattering child
You shall see why I hide
Look at your reflection
I am there, inside!
CHRISTINE
Angel, my friend and guide
Hide no more, come inside!
Angel, won't you—
PHANTOM
[Trust In Me]
Come to me, trust in me
I'm your angel, come to me...
RAOUL [speaking]
Whose is that voice? Who is that in there?
PHANTOM
Slip into secret sanctum
Step into silver mist
Slowly and surely your senses
Will cease to resist
Come to me, trust in me
Take my hand and come with me...
CHRISTINE
[Under The Sea]
In sleep he was always singing
In my dreams he often came
That voice which so softly called me
And sweetly pronounced my name
But do I yet dream still further?
I can't tell if this is real
Such fantastic things surround me
For I find the Phantom's here (WALL STATUE: oh no!)
Inside my mind
Inside my mind
(How) else to explain
(This) hidden terrain
I suddenly find
Up in the light he'll hear me pray
Into the dark he'll lead the way
But how do I fathom
The sight of the Phantom
Inside my mind
PHANTOM
Sing once more again with me now
Take part in our strange duet
Notice that my power o'er you
Is growing still stronger yet
And although you turn away so
You can take a look around
As your eyes search for the Phantom
Guess where he is gonna be found (oh yes)
Inside your mind
Inside your mind
BOTH
My/your composition
Your/my best rendition
In one combined!
CHRISTINE
Those who see you draw back in fear
I am your mask—
PHANTOM
—it's me they hear
CHRISTINE
I see your spirit
I can still hear it
Inside my mind (PHANTOM: Inside your mind)
PHANTOM
Inside your mind (CHRISTINE: Inside my mind)
BOTH
Now we go down
Far deep underground
To where night is blind
PHANTOM
In all your fantasies you knew,
Man and myst'ry—
CHRISTINE
—both in you!
PHANTOM
Is it not pleasant?
Phantom is present
Inside your mind
[CHRISTINE starts to vocalize]
PHANTOM
Sing now my angel
Show me your range'll
Reach that high E
Vocalize higher
Down to the wire
Another octave
Is your objective
Yeah if you wanna
Be lead soprana
Sing it for me!
[CHRISTINE hits E6]
[Part Of Your World]
I have brought you down to music's throne
Into the kingdom where all pay homage
You have come here because
Well, I just need your... voice!
Down in the dark, here where I think,
E'er since that day I first heard you sing
Sing and serve me
Need you to be
Part of my world
PHANTOM
[Beauty and the Beast]
Night-time sharpening
Stirring fantasy
Heightens ev'ry sense
Lowers your defense
Unexpectedly
[first stanza of Beauty and the Beast repeats]
Splendor of the night
Grasp it in your hands
Turn your face away
(From) garish light of day
Give it not a glance
Turn your thoughts away
(From) cold unfeeling light
Listen to the part
Playing in your heart
Music of the night
[A Whole New World]
Now be closing your eyes
Yield to dreams that are darkest
Tell me, Christine, now when last
Did you let your soul take flight?
So close your eyes
Allow your spirit to fly free
Know that until it soars
Your life’s a chore
So purge all thoughts of how it used to be
[Beauty and the Beast]
Music all around
Feel its soft caress
Hear it closing in
(Em)brace it from within
Secretly possess
Open up your mind
(Your) fantasies unwind
(In) darkness which you know
That you can't oppose
Music of the night
[A Whole New World]
I can open your mind
Start a journey of wonder
Through the darkness, and underneath
This op'ra house of mine
A strange new world
Leave ev'rything you knew to be
And once you free your soul—
It longs to soar—
Only then can you belong to me
[Beauty and the Beast]
Floating, falling down
(In)toxicating sound
Touch me, don't just stare
Trust me if you dare
Savor what you feel
Let the dream begin
(Your) darker side, give in
(To the) power of my rhyme
Now and for all time
Music of the night
[The PHANTOM reveals the bridal doll made in her likeness and she faints. He carries her to the bed.]
You alone are right
Help my song take flight
Music of the night
[speaking as he tucks her in]
Under the covers with you now, miss, it's past your bedtime.
BUQUET
[Cruella De Vil]
Parchment for his skin
A hole for his nose
All innocent women
Had better suppose
You'd best keep your guard up and on your toes
He'll catch you, his magic lasso
GIRY
When those who speak of what they know, find (too late)
That prudent silence would make them more wise
I can't believe your gall
Can you hold your tongue at all? [She slaps him]
Keep your hand at level with your eyes!
CHRISTINE
[Heaven's Light - Verses 3+4]
I suddenly remember a mist around me
A man, a boat, a lake, a night that lasts
Or did I dream that he
Serenaded me
And left me questions I must ask:
Who was the shape in that darkness?
Whose is the face inside the mask?
PHANTOM
[Hellfire - Refrain]
Damn you, Christine Daaé!
You prying
Pandora
(See) the mark upon my skin
You lying
Delilah
(Saw) a sight you can't rescind
God have mercy on you
God have mercy on me...
[Jack's Lament - Verse 3 + Refrain]
Is it stranger here than in your worst fear
Can you even bear to look at this nightmare
This scarred FREAK that burns in hell
Yet yearns for heaven secretly, Christine.
But fear can turn to love, you'll see
The man behind the dark shadow
This gruesome beast who secretly dreams
Of beauty that I've never known
[speaking]
Come, we must return. Those two fools who run my theatre will be missing you.
FIRMIN
[Belle]
Opera
Not a quiet business
Ev'ry day
Some new troubles seen
Printed news
Talk of ev'ry scandal
They all seem to say
[looking through many newspaper articles about the Populaire]
Christine! Christine! Christine! Christine!
"A mystery after the gala open"
Oh well, at least the seats were full
The baffled Sûreté say
That they do suspect foul play
First Carlotta, now Christine—
ANDRE
It's damnable!
FIRMIN
Good morning, Andre.
ANDRE
And will they all walk out, today?
FIRMIN
Please don't shout.
The scandals give us some free publicity
The take is vast, Andre, have you not seen the—
ANDRE
No cast! Firmin!
And these notes?
What of them?
It says, "Dear Andre what a charming gala
Christine enjoyed a great success
We were hardly so bereft
When Carlotta up and left
But the dancing was a lamentable mess"
FIRMIN
"My dear Firmin, here's just a brief reminder
My salary has not been paid
Send it care of Opera Ghost
By the quick return of post
Note: it's better if my orders are obeyed"
ANDRE
The gall!
FIRMIN
The guts!
BOTH
Who could have sent this?
ANDRE
Puerile!
FIRMIN
Pure what?
ANDRE
Puerile brain
FIRMIN
It's signed "O.G."
ANDRE
And he wants money
BOTH
He must be nothing short of quite insane!
ANDRE
Monsieur.
RAOUL
Good morning.
I've come to inquire about our soprano.
ANDRE
You mean Carlotta?
RAOUL
No, I mean Miss Daaé.
Have you seen her recently?
FIRMIN (laughing)
Not since yesterday.
RAOUL
And this note,
Who sent it? Did you?
ANDRE
Course not!
FIRMIN
What's all this nonsense?
RAOUL
What, it's not familiar?
Implied threats, vague references, left unsigned, mentions Miss Daaé—
FIRMIN
We're in the dark just as much, you know.
RAOUL
Monsieur!
FIRMIN
Let's see it.
RAOUL
Well, here then.
If it wasn't you...
ANDRE
"Please have no fear for Disney's Christine Daaé
And if it isn't clear what for,
Well, the Music Angel brings
Christine beneath his wings
Make no attempt to see her anymore."
CARLOTTA
Oh, you’re infuriating!
Get your precious patron; where is he?
Here, I have brought your letter
And I most resent the awful things you said to me
RAOUL
"Your days at Opera Disney now are numbered
Tonight Miss Daaé takes your place
But if you steal her song
Be prepared, it will go wrong
There will be a great disaster here
Yes, something bad will happen here
Misfortune, shame, and worse yet, much disgrace."
ANDRE/FIRMIN
Too many notes beyond my upper limit
And most of them about Christine
All we've heard of since we came
Are renditions of her name
GIRY [interrupts, speaking]
Miss Daaé has returned.
ANDRE [still singing]
Is her midnight oil well and truly burned?
FIRMIN [glares at ANDRE, then speaks]
Where precisely is she now?
GIRY
I thought it best if she went home.
MEG
She needed rest.
RAOUL
May I see her?
GIRY
No, monsieur, she will see no one.
CARLOTTA
Will she sing?
Will she sing?
GIRY
Here, I have a note.
ANDRE/FIRMIN/RAOUL/CARLOTTA
Ugh.
FIRMIN
Please!
"Gentlemen, I have now sent you several notes of the most amiable nature, detailing how my theatre is be to run. You have not followed my instructions."
FIRMIN/PHANTOM
"I shall give you one last chance..."
PHANTOM
[Belle]
Christine Daaé is once more there beside you
Give her a role that needs appeal
In the new show for the stage
Cast Carlotta as the page
Miss Daaé shall be the countess
The page's role is quite soundless
Which makes my casting, in a word... ideal.
[speaking]
I shall watch the performance from my normal seat in Box Five, which will be kept empty for me. Should these commands be ignored, a disaster beyond your imagination will occur.
FIRMIN [speaking]
"I remain, gentlemen, your obedient servant. O.G."
CARLOTTA
Christine!
FIRMIN
What next?
CARLOTTA
A ploy!
FIRMIN
Insane—
CARLOTTA
I know who sent this!
ANDRE
This changes nothing!
CARLOTTA
Vicomte!
RAOUL [scoffing]
Indeed!
FIRMIN
Signor—!
ANDRE
A joke
CARLOTTA
He's her lover!
RAOUL
Can you believe this?
FIRMIN
The man—
ANDRE
We don't—
FIRMIN
—is mad!
ANDRE
—take orders.
FIRMIN
Miss Daaé's the page
The silent role
ANDRE
You're our star!
And always will be!
CARLOTTA
It's useless trying to ingratiate me!
You're only saying this to placate me!
[She opens the doors and is confronted by the CROWD who press forward]
CROWD
Christine? Christine? Christine! Christine! Christine! Christine!
[The doors are shut, keeping them out.]
ANDRE
Your public needs you!
FIRMIN
We need you, too!
[Gaston]
CARLOTTA | What for? You've your ingenue—I'm replaced! |
ANDRE | Who, her? Never! |
FIRMIN | Signora, no, the world wants you forever! |
ANDRE | (Si)gnora, the world wants to see you perform |
ANDRE | (Don't) quit when they're shouting your name! |
ANDRE | Every girl here'd love to be your support |
ANDRE | With prima donna on stage |
FIRMIN | There's no one in town as admired as you |
FIRMIN | You're everyone's dream by and by |
FIRMIN | Everyone's awed and inspired by you |
FIRMIN | And it's not very hard to see why... |
[waves at Andre to come up with something] | |
ANDRE | No... one... sings like you do |
ANDRE | Draws a crowd like you do |
FIRMIN | No one belts out the words quite as loud as you do |
ANDRE | For there's no voice in town half as soulful |
ANDRE | Perfect, a pure paragon! |
FIRMIN | You can ask any opera mogul |
FIRMIN | And they'll tell you which star they'd prefer to put on |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | No one's been like you have |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | Our linchpin like you have |
ANDRE | No one's memorized all Lohengrin like you have! |
CARLOTTA | Well, it's true that I have no contemporary |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | Sing, prima donna, once more! |
RAOUL | Christine's angel... |
GIRY | She heard his voice |
CARLOTTA | You'll sing once again to unending applause! |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | No one's snubbed much as you |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | But your public needs you |
FIRMIN | And just think of your fans all lined up in the queue! |
MEG | Is this Phantom an angel or madman? |
CARLOTTA | For my limelight I must be prepared! |
RAOUL | To the orders and warnings and demands: |
RAOUL | Denied! |
CARLOTTA | And please take care when brushing my lustrous hair! |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | No one's fit like you are |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | Full of wit as you are |
ANDRE | No one's as unafraid to admit that you are |
CARLOTTA | I'm especially good at my modulating! [vocalizes a high trill] |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | ...no less from our star! |
ANDRE | Well, you'd not believe that a diva'd relieve |
ANDRE | For a novice who beds the patron |
FIRMIN | You'd not get away with all this in a play |
FIRMIN | But it's perfect in a foreign tongue! |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | No one's righter than you |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | For the scripts that we do |
FIRMIN | For the parts can't be written much higher than you |
CARLOTTA | I'll sing encores without any hesitating! |
GIRY | Heaven help those, who decide to oppose |
CARLOTTA | And then think it once more, their undying support! |
MEG | He will strike here again— |
RAOUL | —the Box Five game begins! |
ALL | Light the stage with that age-old rapport! |
ANDRE/FIRMIN | There's just one voice in town who's got all of it down! |
ALL | Sing, prima donna... once more! |
CONFIDANTE
[It's Tough To Be A God]
They say this youthful gentleman
Has put our Madame in a spin
But if His Lordship knew, God save her soul.
FOP 1
Julia, what are you talking about?
His Lordship sure would die of shock
FOP 2
His Lordship is a laughingstock!
ALL THREE
This faithless lady has no sense of shame
(Sense of shame, sense of shame, and she's to blame.)
[The curtain opens on COUNTESS and SERAFIMO pretending to kiss.]
Oh my God!
COUNTESS (CARLOTTA) [speaking]
Serafimo, your disguise is perfect.
[A knock at the door]
Who can this be?
DON ATTILIO (PIANGI)
Gentle wife, admit your loving husband.
ANDRE [to FIRMIN]
That's exactly the sort of thing the public loves.
DON ATTILIO (PIANGI)
[It's Tough To Be A God]
My love, I'm called away
For affairs that cannot wait
(I) must say goodbye to you and your new maid
[aside] Though I'd happily take the maid with me.
COUNTESS (CARLOTTA)
[aside] The old fool is leaving!
ANDRE
It's the Countess de Charbourg. She's invited us to her salon, you know.
FIRMIN
Nothing like that ever happened to us in the junk business.
ANDRE
Scrap metal.
COUNTESS (CARLOTTA)
Serafimo, away with this pretense!
You cannot speak, but kiss me in my husband's absence.
[It's Tough To Be A God]
Poor fool, he makes me laugh
With my better better-half
(I'd) be mortified if he knew it's a sham! [laughs]
COUNTESS (CARLOTTA)/CHORUS
Poor fool, he doesn't know!
If he knew, he'd never go!
PHANTOM [speaking]
Did I not instruct that Box Five was to be kept empty?
MEG [backstage]
He's here, the Phantom of the Disney...
CHRISTINE
It's him.
CARLOTTA
Your part is silent, little toad!
PHANTOM
A toad, madame? Perhaps it is you who are the toad...
CARLOTTA
Mi scusi, mi scusi.
Maestro, da capo, por favore.
COUNTESS (CARLOTTA)
Serafimo, away with this pretense!
You cannot speak, but kiss me in my [belch]
REYER [attempting to control the orchestra members]
Gentlemen, please, please.
COUNTESS (CARLOTTA)
[It's Tough To Be A God]
Poor fool, he makes me laugh
With my lustful, better [belch]
[belches more while the audience laughs]
[screaming] Mother!
ANDRE
Bring the curtain in, please, will you?
FIRMIN
Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize.
The performance will continue in 10 minutes' time, when the role of the countess will be played by Miss Daaé.
Thank you.
Until then, we would crave your indulgence for a few moments.
ANDRE
Meanwhile we'd like to give you the ballet from Act 3 of tonight's opera.
REYER
What?
ANDRE
Maestro, the ballet, please bring it forward.
FIRMIN
Thank you!
[The ballet is to the tune of Once Upon A December]
[During the ballet, BUQUET runs into the PHANTOM in the catwalks and is throttled and hung onstage.]
RAOUL
Are you alright?
CHRISTINE
Raoul, we're not safe here.
FIRMIN
Ladies and gentlemen, please remain in your seats.
Do not panic. It's simply an accident. An accident.
[Something There]
RAOUL | Why are we here? We must return. |
CHRISTINE | His eyes will find us there inside, those eyes that burn! |
CHRISTINE | We can't go back or he'll kill you! |
RAOUL | Christine, don't say or even think it, it's untrue! |
CHRISTINE | If he must kill a thousand men |
CHRISTINE | The phantom will not hesitate to kill again! |
RAOUL | Forget this hell, it isn't real |
RAOUL | The phantom's tale has now for me lost all appeal! |
CHRISTINE | Who is this man... |
RAOUL | Who is this man... |
CHRISTINE | ...who hunts to kill? |
RAOUL | ...this mask of death? |
CHRISTINE | I can't escape from him, perhaps I never will! |
RAOUL | It's so peculiar— |
RAOUL | I cannot see |
RAOUL | I cannot guess |
RAOUL | Whose is this voice you hear along your ev'ry breath? |
BOTH
And, deep inside this labyrinth
Where the daylight fails and night is blind,
The Phantom of the Disney
He is always/only with me/you somewhere deep inside my/your mind
RAOUL
There is no phantom haunting Disney after all.
CHRISTINE
[Part Of Your World]
Raoul, I've been there, in darkness untold
How many wonders could one cavern hold?
(A) world where the daylight dissolves
As darkness eats everything...
Raoul, I've seen him; I’ll never forget it.
Can I ever escape from that face?
It was so distorted... so misshapen...
It hardly... was a face, anymore
[A Whole New World - Refrain]
But then his voice
It filled my spirit with sweet sounds
With music in my mind
My soul did fly
I heard as though I'd never heard before
RAOUL
(What) you heard was just a dream and nothing more...
CHRISTINE
[Feed The Birds - Refrain]
All his words were simple yet strong
Yet in his eyes, the grief of the world
Pleading eyes, (that) withering gaze
Threatens, beckons, mourns, and adores...
RAOUL
Christine, Christine...
PHANTOM
Christine...
RAOUL
[Can You Feel The Love Tonight]
No more talk of darkness
Forget these wide-eyed fears
With me here now, beside you on the roof,
My words will calm you, too
Let me be your freedom
Let daylight dry your tears
I'm here, beside you, to guard and guide you
Because I'm here for you
CHRISTINE
Say you love me here and now
And talk of summer, too
Promise me, you’ll love me evermore
That's all I ask of you
RAOUL
Let me be your shelter
Let me be your light
You're safe with me, no one will find you
Leave all your fears behind
CHRISTINE
All I want is freedom
A world with no more night
And you will be always beside me
To hold me and to hide
RAOUL
Then share with me one love for life
And end your solitude
Where e'er you go, please let me go with you
That's all I ask of you
CHRISTINE
Share with me one love for life
Raoul, just say the word
Share each day, each night, and each morning
And I will follow you
So say you feel the love tonight
RAOUL
Don't you know I do
It's enough
BOTH
If you will love me, too
That's all I ask of you
[they kiss]
If you go, then let me go with you
That's all I ask of you
[speaking]
CHRISTINE
I must go, they'll wonder where I am
Come with me Raoul...
RAOUL
Christine, I love you...
CHRISTINE
[Can You Feel The Love Tonight]
Order your fine horses
Be with them at the door
RAOUL
And soon you will be sitting at my side
CHRISTINE
You'll guard me and you'll guide...
PHANTOM
[Be Prepared]
I gave you the music within me
Then I made you the star of the stage
And now you deny and betray me
I cannot hold back all my rage
It's certain he'd become enamored
Whenever he first heard you sing
[breaks out of song]
Christine!
CHRISTINE and RAOUL (distant)
[Can You Feel The Love Tonight]
Then share with me one love for life
If you just say the word
Share each day, each night, and each morning
PHANTOM (climbs the statue and screams into the sky)
[Be Prepared]
But the wrath of the Phantom you dared!
Be prepared!
[END OF ACT I]
[Carrying the Banner]
FIRMIN | M'sieur Andre! |
ANDRE | Firmin, my partner! |
FIRMIN | This party's splendid, I'm impressed |
ANDRE | It's the prologue to (a) bright new year |
FIRMIN | Yeah, it's quite a night! |
ANDRE | Well, one does one's best! |
MASK 1 | So there's a prince and there's a pauper |
MASK 2 | And almost ev'ry kind of beast |
MASK 3 | See that queen, priest, clown, and barber? |
MASK 4 | And guessing who is who's some feat! |
ANDRE | Let's raise a toast |
FIRMIN | Then here's to us! |
ANDRE | To new year's delights! |
FIRMIN | What a pity |
ANDRE | That the 'Phantom' |
FIRMIN | Can't be here tonight! |
CHORUS
The masquerade ball
Faces made of paper on parade
A masquerade ball
Ev'ry face another different shade
Hide your face so
(The) world will never find you
No one recognize you
Nor identify you
What a fine ball
Dancing with a mask on unafraid!
PIANGI | And what a crowd this night has brought in |
FIRMIN | Now we can breathe real free at last |
CARLOTTA | They are watching as we watch them |
GIRY | Since all our fears are in the |
MEG | Past! |
CARLOTTA/PIANGI/FIRMIN/ANDRE/GIRY/MEG
We've had three months of reprieve from
All those goddamn notes!
Boy, ain't silence so relieving;
No more freakin' ghost!
CHORUS
So raise your glass more
Celebrate the coming prosp'rous year
Another toast for
All of our good friends who made it here
MASK 5
I'm no schmoozer
Mingling makes me nervous
Masks give me the courage
CHORUS
Anonymously flourish
What a fine ball
Taking in our brand new chandelier
CARLOTTA
Blessed freedom
No more blackmail to steal my scene
No more phantoms
No more Christine!
[Sung in counterpoint]
CHRISTINE
Secret engagement
Think of it: soon I'll be your bride
Let's not argue
You'll know in time!
RAOUL
Why keep it secret, love?
What are we hiding from?
Christine, you gave me your word
I don't know why you're scared
MASK 6 | Three lines is all I got |
RAOUL | Don't wanna argue, then |
MASK 6 | Sure hope the last one's hot |
RAOUL | Maybe I'll just pretend |
MASK 6 | God help me if it's not! |
RAOUL | One day I'll understand |
MASKS
If I hate my class, oh
I'll wear a new mask so
Harder time guessing me they're gonna
Cause 'til two after midnight
I can have the spotlight
And dance with anyone I wanna
[Sung in counterpoint]
GROUP ONE
Look! The scripts for the new season
You call this shit theatre?
I get better stories
From the urchins on the street
Now with audiences declining
Are the writers even trying?
Tell me, how'm I gonna make ends meet?
GROUP TWO
Splash of puce
Ghoul and goose
So what's your part?
Ace of hearts
Will ya tell me
How'm I gonna make ends meet?
MASKS
We need a good assassination!
We need an earthquake or a war!
PIANGI
How 'bout a crooked politician?
ALL
Hey, Piangi, that ain't opera!
All throughout the op'ra house but
Mostly the Great Hall
We forget the outside world by
Dancing until dawn
[Sung in counterpoint]
GROUP ONE
So we'll be right here
Carrying the chorus through it all
We'll have some fun here
Celebrating with another ball
Til the next show
Practice for auditions
Best the competition
With a new rendition
While we're out here
Dancing with a mask on is the—
GROUP TWO
Look, the guy up on the landing
What mask is he wearing?
I thought your mask was ugly
Yeah, but I'm not one to boast
Did you hear about Joe Buquet?
Heard they judged his death a fluke, eh
I don't think that that's the truth, hey
Could there really be a ghost?
Bought it from a gypsy
Is that color really trending?
Little gossip stays a secret
Wish this party never ending
By the graveyard near the stables
Wait, the guy up on the landing is the—
PHANTOM
[Hellfire (after the first refrain)]
Now, why so silent (CHORUS: it's the Phantom!)
My good messieurs? (it's the Phantom...)
Oh, did you think that I had left you all for good?
(...really is such a Phantom?)
Have you missed me (it's the Phantom!)
And our rapport? (it's the Phantom...)
See, I have written you an op'ra—here's the score
(I was right, there's a Phantom!)
[back to the first stanzas of Hellfire]
At last, "Don Juan, Triumphant!"
My fondest greetings to you all
A few instructions 'ere rehearsal starts
This first for Carlotta
The woman must be taught to act
Without just strutting up and down the stage
Ubaldo Piangi:
Our fine Don Juan must lose some weight
It's quite unhealthy in a man his age
Dear Andre and Firmin:
My so-called managers must learn,
Their place is in an office, not the arts.
[speaking]
And as for our star...
[What's This?]
[about half-speed]
Christine Daaé!
No doubt she'll do her best, they say
Her voice is really good, it's true
But if she should wish to excel do not give up
She simply hasn't learned enough
She knows it, though, she knows it
That there's so much more to learn
From me, her teacher
I'm her teacher
If her pride lets her return—
What... is... this? [He tears off her necklace.]
[speaking]
Your chains are still mine. You will sing for me!
[RAOUL chases him down the trapdoor and GIRY releases him from the trap. He convinces her to tell him what she knows of the PHANTOM...]
GIRY
[Out There]
The world is cruel, I learned much younger
When years ago a trav'ling fair came to the city
They called him 'devil' then
Kept him caged and whipped and starved and beaten
On display for people just to jeer
Who was not surprised when he broke free and ran away from there?
Away to here...
YOUNG PHANTOM
I am deformed (Young Giry: You're not deformed)
And I am ugly (Young Giry: But not that ugly)
And these are crimes for which the world shows little pity
You do not comprehend (Young Giry: I am no pretender)
Out there, they'll revile me as a monster (Young Giry: You're not a monster)
Out there, they will hate and scorn and jeer (Young Giry: They are monsters)
Why accept their hatred and their mob injustice
YOUNG GIRY
(Then) stay in here
Stay quiet for me (Young Phantom: I'm quiet)
Secret for me (Young Phantom: Our secret)
I won't betray, so long as you stay in here
YOUNG PHANTOM
I'll stay in here
GIRY [speaking]
I'd intended to hide him in the basement just for the night, but he found the catacombs...
And he made it... his sanctuary.
(Young Phantom: My... sanctuary...)
YOUNG PHANTOM
Deep below these tunnels and these catacombs of old
List'ning to the people up above sing
Why must I be satisfied with life I live alone
Hung'ring for the love and light they're sharing
Why must I but recognize their voices
Knowing them as they will never know me
Why must I but wonder how it feels to see a play
Not below them, but among them
And up there, living in the dorm
Let me one day up there, all I ask—
The normal world my treasure—up there
Where they all live unaware
What I'd give, what I'd dare
Just to live unmasked up there!
RAOUL [speaking]
And then what happened?
GIRY [speaking]
He was spotted, I presume. Rumors have to start somewhere, monsieur.
All I know is that it did not go well.
YOUNG PHANTOM [back to chorus]
Down here, drowning in despair
Tasted freedom up there, till horror did they find
By looking at me out there
Just one night outside the prison of my mind
So I swear
This won't stand
I'm not scared
I demand
Something fair
Lest I spend my life down here
GIRY [speaking]
He was a genius. Scholar, architect, musician, and inventor! A genius, monsieur, a genius!
RAOUL [speaking]
A murderer, treacher, and liar. Clearly, Madame Giry, genius has turned to madness!
GIRY [speaking]
I... I dare not say any more, monsieur. There have been too many accidents...
CHRISTINE
Monsieur.
DRIVER
Where to, mademoiselle?
CHRISTINE
The cemetery.
[The PHANTOM knocks him out and drives the carriage in his stead.]
CHRISTINE
To my father's grave, please.
RAOUL
Where have they gone?
DRIVER
The cemetery.
CHRISTINE
[Under The Sea]
In sleep he was always singing
In my dreams he often came
That voice which so often called me
And sweetly pronounced my name...
[speaking]
Little Lotte thought of everything and nothing
Her father promised her that he would send her the Angel of Music
Her father promised her…
Her father promised her…
CHRISTINE
[When You Wish Upon A Star]
You were once all that mattered
Then one day my world shattered
How could I imagine this
Life without you
Wishing you were here again
Wishing you were somehow near
Oft it seemed if I just dreamed
You would be here
Wishing I could hear your voice
Knowing that I never would
Dreams of you won't help me do
All (you) dreamed I could
Passing bells
And angels shaped from stone
Seem to set the wrong tone
You're warm and gentle
Gazing over wasted years
Fighting back my silent tears
When you wish upon a grave
To say goodbye
Teach me how do I forgive
Show me more how I should live
Give me all the strength to try
To say goodbye
PHANTOM
[Reflection]
Look at you,
Wandering child, so lost and helpless
Yearning for my guidance
CHRISTINE
Who are you,
Phantom, father, or my friend?
PHANTOM
Do you see?
That if you have truly forgotten me
It would break your angel's heart
Too long you strayed from me,
Far from my fath'ring gaze
CHRISTINE
How my mind resists you
BOTH
Yet your/the soul obeys
Angel of music, you/I turned away, (from) beauty true
Angel, hide no longer, let me come with you
PHANTOM
[Trust In Me]
Come to me, trust in me
I'm your angel, come to me
[speaking]
RAOUL
No, Christine, wait! Wait!
CHRISTINE
Raoul!
RAOUL
Whatever you believe, this man, this thing is not your father!
[The PHANTOM tries to draw RAOUL into the trap, but CHRISTINE pulls him away.]
PHANTOM
Then let it be war upon you both. I'll have her if I have to burn down all of Paris!
RAOUL
[Go The Distance]
We have all been blind
To a simple truth
All along the answer
Has been there in our face
This could be the chance
To ensnare our foe
FIRMIN
Go on—
ANDRE
—we're listening
RAOUL
This is how we'll play our ace
We shall play his game
Don Juan will go the distance
For if Miss Daaé sings
It's certain he'll attend
ANDRE
Ensure the doors are barred
FIRMIN
And the police, on guard
RAOUL
We will see the curtain fall
RAOUL/ANDRE/FIRMIN
And then his reign will end!
CHRISTINE
[How Far I'll Go - final refrain]
O-oh, Raoul, please don't ask this of me; it scares me
For no one knows, how far he'll go
If we fail, if this plan goes awry then he'll take me
[like line 2]
And you must know... he won't let go
[Once Upon A Dream (Maleficent) - final refrain]
(So) now I dread
Precisely what once I used to dream
It'll never end
His voice in my head
He'll always be there
The way he was once
Upon a dream...
RAOUL
[Feed The Birds - refrain]
You said yourself he was simply a man
Yet while he lives, he'll haunt us to death...
CHRISTINE
[I See The Light]
All those days, thinking him an angel
All those years, learning under him
All that time, never even knowing
Just how blind I've been
Now I'm here, twisted for an answer:
(Be)tray the man, (who) once inspired my voice?
Sitting here, it's oh so clear
I don't have any choice!
For he murders all that's good
As he kills without a question
And oh God, if I so choose
Then what horrors wait for me?
Yet I know I can't refuse
Or I'd further my oppression
All at once, everything is different
Now that I've seen him
RAOUL
[Gaston]
Don't think I don't care about you, Christine
It hurts me to see you so glum
Our prayers and hopes rest on you now, Christine
Help us to catch the Phantom
CHORUS
[Everybody Wants To Be A Cat]
Hide your sword away now wounded knight
Your vain gasconnade
Brought you your final fight
CHRISTINE
Tell me!
Silken couches, carriages, and hay-filled barns
Forever have been his battlefield
MEG
They say he'll never lose!
PIANGI
If you tangle with Don Juan
REYER
[speaking]
No, no, no! Please.
Don Juan, Signor Piangi, here is the phrase:
"If you tangle with Don Juan"
If you please?
PIANGI
If you tangle with Don Juan
REYER
No, no. Nearly, but no.
If you tan, tan, tan
PIANGI
If you tangle with Don Juan!
CARLOTTA
His way is better. At least he make it sound like music!
GIRY
Signora, would you speak that way in the presence of the composer?
CARLOTTA
The composer is not here. And if he were here, I would...
GIRY
Are you certain of that, Signora?
REYER
So, once again, after seven.
Five, six, seven...
PIANGI
If you tangle with Don Juan...
CARLOTTA
A più non posso! What does it matter what notes we sing?
GIRY
Have patience, Signora.
CARLOTTA
No-one will know if it is right or if it is wrong.
If you tangle with Don Juan!
PIANGI
If you tan... tan...
Is right?
CHRISTINE
Not quite, Signor:
If you tan... tan...
REYER
Ladies... Signor Piangi... if you please...
PHANTOM
[Almost There]
I hate to have to cut the fun short, but the joke's wearing thin
Plus, my fate is sealed with what's set in motion
And it's almost time, let the audience in
Let my op'ra (be)gin!
CHORUS
[Arabian Nights]
Here the sire serves the dam
Here the master takes meat
And the sacrifice bleats in fright
Come on down, stop on by
Cause you're in for a treat
We've one hella debaucherous night!
CARLOTTA AND CHORUS
The maiden's delight:
On her tongue, stolen sweets
Poor maid, for that thrill
Now you'll pay the bill
Tangled in winding sheets!
Serve the red and the white
Serve the master and when
Plans, tables, and maids
Are all at once laid,
Don Juan wins again!
DON JUAN (PIANGI)
[Friend Like Me (including intro)]
Passarino, soon we'll realize what we've planned here!
So why don't you reiterate, whilst I explicate our clever strategy...
PASSARINO
Well, tonight's young guest believes our roles reversed
I’m the master, and you, the man.
DON JUAN (PIANGI)
And because she'd not seen me when you met
She thinks she dines with her common man
We'll scoff and quaff all of the finest wine
Reducing inhibitions more and more
Til late, we'll steal that which is mine
PASSARINO
And then I come back home and slam the door!
DON JUAN (PIANGI)
And I'll say
"Oh no, my master's home,
You'd best come hide with me,
Somewhere he won't find you,
Like my room!"
PASSARINO
Poor thing never had a chance, did she?
Ho ho ho
DON JUAN (PIANGI)
Here's my hat, cloak, and sword
Her conquest is assured
If I don't forget myself and laugh
PASSARINO
You ain't never had a friend like me
[both laugh]
AMINTA (CHRISTINE)
[Someday My Prince Will Come]
No thoughts, but thoughts of joy
No dreams, but dreams of love
PASSARINO
Master...
DON JUAN (PHANTOM)
[Kiss The Girl]
Passarino... strings, winds, words
You have come here
To pursue your deepest urge
That our passion fuse and merge
A wish we couldn't yet hear
It's not silent now
Cause you've succumbed somehow
You have decided, sure
What raging fire
Flooding into our soul
Rich desire unlocks its door
Sweet seduction before us!
The point (o') no return,
No backward glances, learn:
Our games are ended, girl
(Join with me now)
Slipping past all thought of "if" or "when"
No use resisting, then
We'll let the dream unfurl
Stepping past the point of no return
And what warm secrets learned
After I kiss the girl?
AMINTA (CHRISTINE)
You have brought me
To just when words slip from reach
To the moment where the speech
Disappears into silence
Already in my mind
I see our bodies entwined
Yes I've decided, sir
Slipping past the point of no return
Our passion-play's begun
No taking back our word
Bursting past all thought of right or wrong
How long before we're one
And toes begin to curl?
Leaving past all thought of stopping now
Don't try to hide it how
You wanna take the girl
BOTH
We've gone past the point of no return
The bridge is crossed and burned
It's time to take the girl
CHORUS [softly]
You gotta take the girl
You wanna take the girl
You gotta take the girl
Go on and take the girl
PHANTOM
[Can You Feel The Love Tonight (refrain)]
Share with me one love for life
End my solitude
Anywhere you go, please let me go with you
[speaks] Christine...
That's all I ask of—
[CHRISTINE removes the PHANTOM's mask, revealing to all that he's JUDGE DOOM. He sweeps his cloak around her and they vanish.]
CARLOTTA [discovering PIANGI's corpse]
Piangi, my love! You left before me...
ANDRE
Oh my god!
FIRMIN
We're ruined, Andre. Ruined!
RAOUL
Where did he take her?
GIRY
Come with me, monsieur. I will take you to him.
But remember, keep your hand at the level of your eyes!
MEG
I'll come with you.
GIRY
No, Meg, no! You must stay here.
Come with me, monsieur. Do as I say.
PHANTOM
[A Whole New World]
Descend once more
Down to the prison of my mind
In this dungeon of despair
There's time to spare
Down that path to darkness deep as hell!
PHANTOM
[Not In Nottingham]
Why, you ask now
Was I chained and bound
In this cold
Dismal underground
Well, not for mortal sin
But my abhorrent face!
Only hounded out, and met with hate
Not many words, and not a one were kind
Often hid the tears I cried
Can't there be some happiness for me?
No, not anywhere...
[speaking]
Christine... Why, why...?
MOB (offstage)
[The Mob Song]
Through the mist
Down the stairs
Through the darkness and the shadows
It's a nightmare but the phantom we must find
Be aware
Of the rope
In the darkness of the dungeon
Keep your hand up at the level of your eyes!
[Onstage, GIRY and RAOUL raise their hands as they hear the MOB.]
GIRY [speaking]
This is as far as I dare go.
RAOUL [speaking]
Thank you.
MOB (offstage)
"Opera Ghost" was a myth
To deceive us
Just a man who would kill
Thoughtlessly
No more tricks
No more notes
He shall swing from gallows
Till he's dead
Good and dead
Kill the Ghost!
[Onstage, RAOUL falls through a trapdoor]
CHRISTINE
[Part Of Your World]
Now comes my turn, thinking the worst
Now that you've slaked at last your bloodthirst
Oh, I can see
Am I to be
Prey to your lust?
PHANTOM
[Jack's Lament]
Long denied the pleasures of the flesh
By the same damn fate where I wallow in blood
(Yea,) I tire of this face, which I thought you understood
This infection you hate, that poisons love for good
[Beauty and the Beast]
A face which only earned
Mother's loathing gaze
My first mask was a rag
Two holes cut in a bag
Wore it everyday
No more useless masks
(My) scarred visage unleashed
Pity comes too late
Turn and face your fate:
Beauty and the Beast!
CHRISTINE
[Feed The Birds]
(This) haunted face spawns horror no more
It's in your soul that distortion has hold
PHANTOM [speaking]
Wait! I think, my dear, we have a guest!
CHRISTINE
Raoul!
PHANTOM
[Arabian Nights]
I had hoped you would come
Down to join in the fun
So this is unsurpassed delight
For I wished you'd stop by
Give her rescue a try
And thus truly, you've made it my night!
RAOUL
[Let It Go]
Let her go, let her go
Do what you like, but let her free
Let her go, let her go
PHANTOM
Your lover's impassioned plea!
RAOUL
Here I stand, just outside the gate!
Show compassion, man
PHANTOM
Compassion's ne'er been shown to me anyway!
RAOUL [speaking]
Please... let me see her.
PHANTOM [speaking]
Be my guest, sir... [He pulls a lever and the gate begins to rise.]
[Be Our Guest]
Be... my... guest! Be my guest!
Put your passion to the test!
Did you think that I would harm her
when it's you who are the pest?
[The PHANTOM flings the Punjab lasso at RAOUL]
Call your horse! Raise your hand!
Will they come upon command?
Down so deep you've only wishes
To go languish with your riches
Face your death, so pristine,
Or be saved by sweet Christine:
[to Christine]
Choose before this noose grows tight around his neck!
Go on and pick your man and
If it's not me then I'll
Kill our guest, kill our guest, kill our guest!
CHRISTINE
[I Won't Say I'm In Love]
The tears I might have shed for your fate
Grow cold and turn to anger
My fallen idol and my false friend
We had such hopes and those hopes are shattered
PHANTOM
Too late for returning
It's too late for prayers and pity
There's no point in fighting
No one coming from the city (RAOUL: Oh nooooooo)
Girl, you can't avoid it
Either way you're choosing
And you cannot (cannot) win
RAOUL
Oh, say you love him
And my life is over
PHANTOM
Spend life with me
Or send him to his grave?
RAOUL
Why make her lie
Just to try to save me?
CHRISTINE
Angel of Music, who deserves this?
I don't believe you'd release me.
My head is screaming, "Get a grip, girl!"
Now that I realize how you deceived me
PHANTOM
You keep on denying
No escape from this decision
Baby I'm not lying
My words never need revision
Face it like a woman
Three hang in the moment
When you got, got, gotta act
RAOUL
Oh, don't throw away
Your life for my sake
PHANTOM
His life, the prize
Realize, you must earn
CHRISTINE
This scene won't play
When will you see reason?
RAOUL
For pity's sake
Don't obey, just say no
PHANTOM
You're out of time
Stop delaying
Here's your deadline
No more playing
RAOUL
You should be free
So strongly have I fought...
CHRISTINE
Oh, I gave my mind
(To) you without any thought...
PHANTOM [speaking]
You try my patience. Make your choice.
CHRISTINE
[Baby Mine]
Poor creature of the dark
How has life, left such a mark?
God give me courage to show
You're not alone, phantom of mine
[she kisses him]
MOB [off stage, but approaching]
[The Mob Song]
He's a beast
One as cruel as a werewolf
We won't rest
Till he's good and deceased
We descend
By torchlight
Armed and ready
For a fight
We'll exterminate the blight!
Track him down
String him up
Far too long we've let him scare us
And we know now that he's there deep down below
For Buquet!
For Piangi!
Let this creature ne'er go free!
We'll cure the murdering disease!
We'll kill the Ghost!
PHANTOM [while the MOB sings in the background]
[Healing Incantation (Tangled)] [50%+ faster]
Take her now and go
(For)get what you have seen
Leave me here alone
Forget what once was mine
Take the boat and hide
Swear you'll never tell
(This) secret that you know
Of the angel in hell
Now go, go now!
PHANTOM (with the music box playing)
[When She Loved Me]
If somebody loved me
My face would be beautiful
No more smothering my feelings
Hiding in a mask
If she loved me
[looks up to see CHRISTINE]
Christine, I love you
[She returns the ring.]
CHRISTINE (distant)
[Can You Feel The Love Tonight]
Then share with me one love for life
RAOUL (distant)
Just say the word
CHRISTINE (distant)
Share each day, each night, and each morning
PHANTOM
[Beauty and the Beast]
You alone were right
(To) make my song take flight
But it's over now
Music of the night!
[credits roll, the full cast comes onstage to take bows, etc]
[I-2-I]
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
The world seems like an ocean
Too hard to swim, afraid that you'll drown
But with the right devotion
You'll glide across and break some new ground
Maybe you'll discover
What you should have known all along!
Yeah. One way or another,
You, on your own, can still be strong!
If you listen to your lonely heart
You'll find you'll never take any part
But maybe life is still worth a try
So get out there and face the world, I 2 I!
So, child of wildernesses,
Don't build that wall too hard to break through.
You'll find your way from darkness
The world out there has arms to hold you.
So you don't have to worry
Step into the great unknown. Oh!
You don't have to be lonely,
Even if you live alone!
(No one's gonna stop you now!)
If you listen to your lonely heart
You'll find you'll never take any part
But maybe life is still worth a try
So get out there and face the world, I 2 I!
(Life is worth seeing, it's worth the try)
(Seeing it's worth the try!)
If you're feeling lonely, STOP!
You don't have to be!
You can be the only
Companion that you ever need
(Take a look inside and see!)
Yeah!
If we listen to our lonely hearts
We'll keep each other too far apart
But maybe love is still worth a try
So get out there and face your life, I 2 I!
(Face the world, I 2 I!)
(Face the world, I 2 I, baby!)
(So get out there!)
(So get out there!)
(I 2 I)
(Live your life, baby!)
(Live your life, I 2 I!)
(YEAH!)
(I 2 I!)
