Slow Play - Tips

Tips for avoiding “Slow Play”:

<1> Employ “Ready Golf”.  Each player in the group plays when ready.

<2> Drive the cart to the first ball and drop off the player with his choice of club (or shall we say – several clubs – so no need to go back to the cart to pick another one. We might as well add here – to make sure the player also remembers to take with him – other devices (e.g., GPS range). The idea is to avoid having to go back to the cart to retrieve another club or device)

<3> Use the time you spend getting to your ball to think about the next shot. When you reach your ball, you’ll need less time to figure out the shot.

<4> Hit provisional ball, if you are unsure whether your ball has gone ‘out of bounds’ or may be lost.

<5> Begin reading the green and lining up PUTTS as soon as you reach the green. Don’t wait until it’s your turn to putt to start the process of reading the green. PLEASE and PLEASE  AVOID reading the green like Bryson DeChambeau (spending more than 3 mins to putt and then missing it anyway).

<6> When leaving the green and returning to your golf cart, get in the cart, drive to the next tee. Take care of the scoring or whatever else you needed to do (e.g., cleaning the club or reorganizing the clubs) – after you reach the next tee.

<7> Never park the cart in front of the green. Park it only to the side of behind the green.  This opens up the green for the next group – right after you finish putting.

<8> Set a maximum time limit in searching for a ball.

<9> Save offering golf tips – for the driving range in order to avoid annoying your partners and cause them to play slow

<10> Adhere to the allowed maximum time when searching for your golf ball.

<11> On the tee, pay attention to your fellow-competitor’s drives – so you can help direct them to it and avoid any searching

<12> When waiting on the tee for the group in front to clear the fairway, don’t be so strict about order of play. Let the short hitter – who can’t reach the group ahead anyway – go ahead and hit.

<13> Work on building a concise pre-shot routine. Limit practice strokes to one or two at the most.

<14> Carry extra tees, ball markers and an extra golf ball in your pockets so you never have to return to your golf bag to find one when needed.

<15> When chipping around the green, carry both the club you’ll be chipping with plus your putter so you don’t have to return to the bag.
