Thank you so much, Kozy, for taking the time to answer these questions! I must apologize for any confusing language, as I'll be using a translator.
I used a translator on my phone to play 2999 Game Kids on the Playstation, so I was able to understand most of the text, but sometimes I might not be able to see the insightful nuance of your writing, which made me sad. What I was able to understand, however, clearly indicated to me that you are truly great in your ability. Your words are introspective, existential, and meaningful. Yet they also are so beautiful when you describe the lucid dreams that Deer has or the world that he lives in. It's an honor to speak with you.
Thank you again, so much! Here are the questions:
- What were your hobbies and interests as a young child?
- In my childhood, video games and personal computers did not exist yet. When I was in elementary school (1970s), I was particularly fond of toys called "electronic blocks (Block Type Erectonic Experiment Kit). By combining blocks with electronic components and wiring, like Lego blocks, you could create dozens of different kinds of electronic machines. As I played with it enthusiastically, the sense that the boundary between my body and the machine was becoming blurred was very similar to the sensation I get from playing video games.
- What was your favorite video game as a child? (This was asked prior to receiving the first answer haha)
- I was born in 1962. When I was a child, there were no computer or video games yet. I first encountered video games when I was a freshman in high school (15 years old) in 1978. It was Taito's "Space Invaders". It was a coin-op GAME placed in coffee shops in the form of a table cabinet. It was such a big boom that there were lines of people waiting in line at all the coffee shops. At the time, there was a shortage of ¥100 coins to invest in this game in Japan.
- What inspired you to become a writer?
- I originally worked as a writer for advertisements and a scriptwriter for videos. I started writing a novel in the form of a science fiction short story for a video game magazine called "Famitsu (Famitsu)" and the response was so great that I wanted to write many stories for the video game generation.
- It’s so cool that you were a script writer for Toho! You must have been very excited! Do you have any stories or experiences with Toho that you would like to share?
- I was not an employee of Toho, but an outsourced staff member. I worked on advertising, video planning, and scriptwriting. I worked on many of the advertisements for Toho's many old monster movies such as "Godzilla," "Mothra," and "King Ghidorah" at a time when Toho was releasing many of them as video software. I have good memories of visiting the production sites of many monster movies and robot animations and interviewing their creators.
- While working on GAME KING Takahashi Meijin VS Mouri Meijin - The Great Battle!, did you get to meet Takahashi Meijin? I played and beat Takahashi Meijin no Bōken Jima on the NES (Famicom) when I was a kid (here in the US it was called Hudson's Adventure Island). It was so hard but it was also very fun! Did you ever see Takahashi Meijin perform the 16 shot in real life?
- Yes, I have been involved with this film from the planning stage to completion. I have been involved in this film from the planning stage to completion. I had many discussions with Takahashi Meijin about the content of the film. At that time, he directly taught me how to shoot 16 shots in a row. I could only shoot 14 shots in a row. Takahashi Meijin was already very popular at that time. I used the monster movie system to structure the movie in the form of a "showdown" between Star Gamer Takahashi Meijin and Star Gamer Mouri Meijin. Because I had once been excited by the battle between King Kong and Godzilla.
- Are there any English translations for any of the Game Kids books? I would love to read them and I feel that there are many English speakers that would enjoy them as well. If there are no translations, would you ever consider having them translated? I really hope so!
- Do you think Andromedia might ever be translated? I would really like to read that before I watch the film by Takashi Miike.
- Neither Game Kids nor Andromedia has ever been translated into English. I would like to have my novels read by the English-speaking world. However, until now, I have never done the work to do so. If anyone is willing to translate my work into English, I would be really happy. In that case, you are welcome to publish the translated work on the Internet (as long as it is free of charge).
- 2999 Game Kids on the Playstation was developed by a company named ARC Entertainment (within Sony?). I cannot find any information about them online. Are you able to tell me anything about them? What other games did they make besides the other Playstation Comics releases?
- ARC Entertainment is a label within Sony. They also made the "Arc The Lad" series, among others. This label no longer exists.
- I played through 2999 Game Kids on Playstation and the experience was incredible. You paint a beautifully sad world that these robot characters live in and the story will stick with me for a long time. There are some very dark moments, like when Deer and Marie’s child is returned to the factory and disassembled during their divorce. And later, while working in the factory at his job, Deer discovers a music box made out of his child! It’s so dark and depressing and I was almost brought to tears. Would you like to talk about what types of things in the real world inspired these themes?
- I thought that the wonder of the "mind" could be portrayed well in a world where blood and the body do not exist at all. I believe that humanity will evolve in that direction. Since I was a child, I often dreamed of the same place. I forgot my dreams as soon as I woke up, so I kept a notebook by my bedside and every time I woke up, I would write them down in pictures and words. Thanks to this process, the images of the landscape became more and more precise and clear. A map was also completed. It was a mysterious city inside a dome-shaped closed space. Everything, even people's bodies, were made of machines. The city itself was like a perpetual motion machine, continuing its activities indefinitely. Now I know every detail of it. I wanted to visualize this world, make it three-dimensional, and tell a story. The reason for this is that I know that I will live there after I die.
- Deer is such a relatable character to me. The problems he faces with domesticity resonate well with all of us living our daily lives. I love the way he gives automated responses to his wife and then we get to hear his inner dialogue as he questions why he does these things. He also faces class inferiority with his wife because she comes from a wealthy family and he is not able to afford to buy her all of the things she wants. Personally, I can identify very much with all of the elements that make up Deer, and you did such a good job of detailing his pondering from moment to moment. Would you like to talk about what inspired these domestic themes and what made you choose to present them in sci-fi setting?
- Deer is a character that is a fairly strong projection of myself, but I believe it exists in everyone's heart. I hoped to call it out from within each person's heart, just as a tuning fork resonates.
- I have read articles by Japanese fans of yours about something called the Fate Loop, which involves theories centered around the pursuit of the character, Oppen. Entropy, Gods, genomes, transcendence, and cyclical balance are all discussed heavily when bringing up the Fate Loop conversation in regards to 2999 Game Kids. Are you happy when you see that you have set these conversations in motion amongst people? How often do you agree with fans’ theories? Are any of them correct?
- All my novels are Sim fiction rather than Science fiction. What I want to do is simulation. Therefore, I include a lot of elements as input, but keep the output very simple. I am surprised and pleased that readers (players) are taking it in stride and understanding it. I respect my current readers (players) very much. I think I must continue to write well for them.

- What do you like to drink at K-CAFE?
- UFO coffee is recommended. It is said that if you drink it, you can meet aliens within 24 hours. K-CAFE is also featured in the Digimon games "Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth" and "Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory". This is because I am responsible for some of the scenarios in these games. https://www.famitsu.com/news/201503/10073646.html
