2018 Rookie Science Teacher of the Year

Cassy Sandoval

Middle School Rookie- Cedar City, UT

Cassy Sandoval has always had a passion for science education. She received her degree in Biology Education at Southern Utah University and immediately began her career working for Canyon View Middle School, where she has been teaching 8th grade science for the past three years. She resides in Cedar City with her husband and three sons. This self-proclaimed “baseball mom” cherishes her time outside of class and can often be found at a baseball game or enjoying the outdoors with her family. She is a proponent for the PLC process, diligently works to ensure all students learn and is an advocate for science fair participation in schools. She has an unwavering commitment to education and plans to continue teaching science for years to come.

Suzette Boland

High School Rookie- Manga, UT

Suzette Boland is an intern teacher from the University of Utah, at Cyprus High School, where she teaches Biology and Forensic Science. She found her love of science in college while attending SLCC. She transferred to the University of Utah in 2015 to pursue a Bachelor’s in biology. While completing some community action hours at a high school for a class, she discovered she was meant to teach, and began pursuing a teaching license. In her free time she enjoys skiing, sailing, and aerial silks. She lives in Sandy with her husband, Hank, 2 dogs, and 1 cat.
