Getting Started with Google

Teachers will be able to successfully log in to their Google accounts and locate Google applications and resources. They will understand how this technology can benefit teaching and learning and can support the work they currently do to help ensure students are successful.

Teachers will follow along with step by step instructions on how to login in to their Google Accounts. Teachers will have the opportunity to explore various resources available to them through Google such as Gmail, Docs, Forms, Slides, Sheets, etc.

Creating your Google Classroom

Teachers will be able to successfully create a Google Classroom and add all of their students from their roster to a class so that they can assign work and post announcements for their students in the future.

Teachers will follow along as they are instructed on how to set up their own Google Classrooms. This will be hands on and will be done at their own pace until they feel comfortable with the classes they have created. A “Demo” class will be created for them to use through this experience, so they get comfortable before utilizing their real class.

Stage 3: Understanding How Google Classroom Works

Understanding the difference between Stream, Classwork, Grades, and People

Teachers will understand the following: The ‘Classwork’ section organizes content by modules and units, making it easier for them to plan curriculum by grading period and unit, as well as letting students find assignments more conveniently. The ‘Stream’ is designed with a compact view for assignments that better emphasizes questions and discussions. The ‘People’ view allows for better management of co-teachers, students, and guardians. This page allows teachers to add and remove users, as well as update guardian info and send emails. The ‘Grading’ tab allows teachers to switch between grades, comments, and submitted assignments easily. Teachers can leave feedback as well as save frequently used comments to use on other assignments.

Teachers will have the opportunity to practice posting various material in the different sections through their “Demo” class. They will follow guidelines on how and where to post announcements, assignments, grades, and other important class material. This will be done by teachers individually, so they can get a better understanding of how the various tabs work.

How to create assignments and others various materials for Google Classroom

Teachers will understand they have the ability to create and assign work and other materials for their students, all without having to print any material. Questions, essays, worksheets, readings, etc. can all be distributed to students online and made easily available to their class.

Teachers will follow step by step instructions on how to create and upload various files and materials they will need in class. They will practice scheduling and posting the material they will need for specific class at the appropriate time it will be needed.

How to Assign and Grade work in Classroom

Teachers will understand that after students submit assignments that they have been assigned, they will be able to review and grade them and that they can leave feedback for their students.

Teachers will follow a step by step guide to learn how to set the different assignments under the Classwork tab in Google Classroom. This guide will show the different options; assignment, quiz assignment, question and material, when and how to assign them and the various ways to access grades and give feedback to students.

Stage 5: Staying Organized with Google

How to Stay Organized with your Google Drive

Teachers will understand that they best way to organize your Google Drive is to create category-specific folders for subjects, skills, assignments, students, data, etc.

Teachers will follow step by step instructions and examples and learn how to upload and rename various files and how to create folders and color code them for easier more convenient organization say they can access all of their resources.

Teachers will work together in small groups to discuss what ways they organize their Drive that best works for them. The group will share their information with the rest of the group by using the stand-share-sit strategy.

Stage 6: How to Communication using Google

How to communicate with Students, Parents, and Peers

Teachers will understand that Google Classroom makes it easy to contact students and/or parents and guardians through “Class Summaries” emails. The information in the email can include students’ missing work, upcoming work, and recent class activity to help track their progress.

 

Teachers will learn how to click on the “Invite Guardians” link that will open up a dialogue box which allows the teacher to input the parents’ info and send them an invite. Once the parent accepts the invite, email summaries can be sent out to the parent. Teachers will gain hands-on experience through learning that Guardian email summaries and Gmail are two of the easiest methods to keeping parents informed of student progress in the classroom.

Teachers will interact with various teachers from other campuses to see how they stay in communication with families through Google Classroom and what resources work best for them.

Technology Specialists will continue to be available every Monday after school until 4:30. This will allow teachers ongoing support and practice of the various strategies until they feel comfortable with the strategy. This will also allow teachers to have a readily available time to ask any and all questions they may have about the implementation of classroom technology  in a space where they feel welcome.
