This presentation focuses on the experience of using the website with the URL https://anglofon.com/test-your-legal-english-terminology in the classroom. This website was chosen to teach legal English (LE) vocabulary to law students at the University of Jember (Unej) because of its suitability in meeting the needs of Unej law students to master LE vocabulary. To find out whether the website is useful or not for Unej law students, at the end of the class they are asked to write a paragraph regarding their comments on using the website in the classroom. Most of the students stated that the website with the URL https://anglofon.com/test-your-legal-english-terminology was very useful in improving their LE vocabulary mastery. Hopefully this website can also be used by other teachers in teaching LE.

Supardi is a teacher of English at the University of Jember. At this University he is teaching English to law students at the Faculty of Law. To develop his professionalism, Supardi has written some articles published in some international journals. He has also presented some of his papers at the international conferences.

Mr. Vinayadhar Raju is working as English Language Teacher in Telangana state government secondary school, ZPHS Jangapally in Karimnagar district. He is also acting as a State Resource person and training module writer for in-service teacher training organised by Telangana state government and SCERT. Mr. Vinayadhar has 24 years of experience in teaching English and Handling inservice teacher trainings by integrating technologies in teacher training sessions as well as in classroom teaching. He also provided an exceptional contribution to the teaching of English by maintaining a subject Forum, ELTA-English Language Teachers Association- Telangana for the Continuous professional development of English Language Teachers in the state.

Mr. Vinayadhar post graduated in M.A English literature from Kakatiya University,Warangal and completed his Bachelor of Education from the same University. He completed E-moderator course sponsored by British council and TESOL methods from Oregon university sponsored by RELO India. Participated in E-Teacher Alumni programme and organised workshops for teachers working in government school on “Alternative assessment strategies.” He participated in British council's project “Teachers and students as co-researchers in Indian government schools” sponsored by Warwick University,U.K.

Mr. Vinayadhar worked on collaborative project with the teacher in Honor-roll school,Texas, USA. During this project he connected his class-room with US class-room using asynchronous technology. Students from US and ZPHS Jangapally worked collaboratively on projects like “ Backpacks” and “Film reviews” using padlet a collaborative wall.

Mr. Vinayadhar started implementing the concepts he has learnt in TEA program at Appalachian University and became an agent of change in his community.

How to practise verb patterns on Triptico when teaching through Zoom

Using screen sharing has become second nature to many teachers now as a result of Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) but bringing all the different facets of gamified grammar into the synchronous online classroom can be challenging. This presentation shows some ways of combining the features of Zoom, such as the chat together with Triptico to practise and personalize language in a variety of ways. Participants will have the chance to experience these activities and share them with their own students as well as learning how to create and manage their own games.

Teaching with Current, Authentic Video: Lingua Attack

Effective teaching of foreign languages to today's tweens, teens and young adults requires them to be truly engaged and motivated, as there are so many distractions that otherwise claim their attention. For this generation of learners, current, authentic video content is the key, but lessons integrating it need to be structured as carefully as any other lesson plan, gamified, and available on both web and mobile. Lingua Attack has been specifically designed for such use across six learning languages, and is available in 26 user interface languages.

Paul Maglione is the co-founder and Director of Education of Entertainment Learning, the Paris-based publisher of language-learning platforms English Attack, Lingua Attack, Qioz.fr and DoYouSpeak Jeun'Est. Paul held successive high-level international management positions in the consumer goods, television, and videogaming industries before co-founding EL. He has degrees from Brown University and London Business School as well as a TEFL certificate from Rutgers University.

Highlighting lexical chunks with Diigo

Diigo is a social bookmarking tool, which allows you to save and access all your bookmarks online. But it's not only a great app for keeping your links in one place; its highlighting function can be used in class for drawing students attention to and keeping track of lexical chunks in online articles, texts and web pages.

Leo Selivan is a teacher trainer and writer based in Tel Aviv, Israel. He trains both pre-service and in-service teachers as well as language editors. For many years he advocated the Lexical Approach through his blog Leoxicon and articles in Modern English Teacher, The Guardian Education and Humanising Language Teaching. This culminated in the publication of Lexical Grammar (Cambridge University Press, 2018). His second book, Activities for Alternative Assessment (DELTA Publishing, 2021), comes out next month. No less importantly, Leo is still a practising EFL teacher with more than 15 years of experience.

Making most of MS Teams as an LMS

Many of my learners only know MS Teams as a video conferencing tool. And although it makes a great tool for this, especially with the latest features of breakout rooms, the app can help teachers much more as it allows you to manage your classes and your learning content without leaving the platform. In this live demo, we will create a team, channels for group work and peer-to-peer review, tie in apps, set tasks and deadlines, create a wiki, organise a webinar, use the together mode, link videos and websites that you want your class to deal with. I will also talk about the new upcoming features such as dynamic view, channels for external people, presenter view (to allow you better recordings of sessions) and meeting controls. Make sure to make the most of Teams and bring your questions!

Kirsten Wächter has been a business English trainer based in Germany since 1998. Having taught in-company courses for many years, today she focuses on teaching business communication, English for special purposes and intercultural courses. She designs her own materials for online and offline teaching and provides teacher training, too.

Language instructors are already challenged to teach a social subject, fully online, as lockdowns continue into 2021. Any relief that technology can offer with tangible results, using a simple tool should be welcomed in the language education community. The Read Aloud Moodle plug-in assists students and instructors by providing individualized listening, reading and pronunciation activities. Simply, students read a passage, then Read Aloud’s AI evaluates the audio file, data is provided to the teacher and the teacher can use this data to assist the student with their reading skill. Educators can also use this data to benchmark their students’ oral reading abilities. Read Aloud saves teachers time and energy as students engage with Read Aloud in an individualized fashion, and feedback is provided to learners and the instructors. Students can repeat activities for mastery purposes if the instructor provides this opportunity. Read Aloud provides four learning events, which will are detailed in the sections below. Read Aloud includes the following benefits: oral reading practice for learners, oral reading benchmarking, reading skill development, listening practice, pronunciation practice, automatic or manual grading for tasks, performance reports, reading fluency and accuracy enhancement and instructors choice of the reading content. In this session, a few of ReadAloud's features will be demonstrated.

Building interaction in Zoom Sessions

Would you like to make your Zoom VC sessions more interactive? Come along and see the facilities that Zoom makes available, try out all sorts of activities, pop into and out of the breakout rooms to get a feel for how they work. We will look at how you can use annotation tools, text chat and audio chat to bring your lessons to life. We will look at sharing screens, a whiteboard, files, audio and video. I will share a multitude of ideas about the types of activities that you can do to engage learners. Come along and share your thoughts, questions and ideas.

Currently Carol Rainbow is an online tutor for The Consultants-E, teaching teachers from all over the world how to use technology, especially VC rooms to enhance their teaching along with how to teach online.

She has been using Virtual Worlds as a teaching platform for the last eight years for teaching ESL and e-safety having also been a moderator of many EVO sessions about using Second Life for education, machinima and games making.

This live demo shows where to get Minecraft, how to set it up, and then how to cope with the most daunting moment newcomers to Minecraft will likely face when joining a survival server for the first time: arrival in a strange world without resources, making shelter, crafting tools, surviving the night, and thriving thereafter.

Even on servers with protected spawn points, players may face this challenge when moving into the world beyond. You’ll learn about arrival, survival, and developing strategies for thriving in Minecraft by finding food and wool for a bed to return you to a predictable point after mishap, and keeping materials there to avoid having to restart from scratch. With a successful strategy, the game becomes enjoyably challenging. All you need now is a community, our last topic.

As founder of Learning2gether.net, Vance Stevens has hosted over 500 podcasts. His 150 publications regard students using computers to learn languages and teachers using technology by engaging in communities of practice and participatory cultures. Introducing an AI-based writing application

This presentation will introduce the development of an AI-based writing application with potential use for English as a foreign/second language (EFL/ESL) classrooms. The researcher is developing the tool to assist English language learners (ELLs) overcome the cognitive barriers they face when they attempt to produce written text in English.

John M. Gayed is a lecturer at the University of Hyogo and holds an M.Ed. in Educational Technology. He is currently a Ph.D. student at the Tokyo Institute of Technology researching AI-based writing assistant’s impact on English language learners. Digital learning, applied linguistics and computational linguistics are his main research areas.

This demo highlights two mobile apps for detecting fake news: NewsCop and Oigetit.

It also illustrates BookWidgets website that provides a checklist for enhancing readers' critical abilities to distinguish between what is real and what is fake out there. The presenter will also refer to BreakingNews Class Tools, one of several web-based fake news creators. Students can use such tools to challenge each other by googling the headlines, doing a reverse photo search, and finally verifying which is real and which is not. These tools aim at creating critical thinkers who do not easily fall for logical fallacies and sensational techniques that spread subjectivity and distort facts.

Hanaa Khamis is an ESOL Practitioner and TESOL Trainer who has experimented with instructional technology since 1999. Currently, she is part of TESOL Gulf Board of Directors. She earned an MA in TESOL from the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt in 2007. Her thesis focused on communication strategies among EFL university learners in online interactions. Her research and training interests mainly include pedagogy, technology and assessment.

In this webinar, Joe Dale will showcase a variety of examples of good practice in online teaching from practising secondary school languages teachers on Twitter. He will explore ways in which teachers have dealt with life during the pandemic and show how different cross-platform tools can promote collaboration, independent learning, creativity and assessment opportunities in a remote teaching and hybrid teaching context. Joe will demonstrate how easy it is to enhance learning in a purposeful way with a range of tools which are device agnostic allowing learners to practise, reflect and share the results easily. Our goal is to connect people all over the world through their mutual ability and desire to learn and speak English.

Martin Samuels has been teaching English, on and off, since moving to Budapest in 1994, and he was shocked to hear a few years ago how low Hungary ranks in the language-speaking league tables. Wanting to do something about it, he came up with the idea for Quiz42, not thinking at the time that this could become a global tool. MS Teams

MS Teams is a platform that divides students into teams including private channels. Teachers can schedule and record meetings where they share screens, take notes and create breakout rooms. After ending meetings, MS Teams creates attendance reports. Teachers can also create assignments or quizzes with rubrics. The platform incorporates Microsoft tools (e.g., Word, Excel) and it can add a considerable number of applications (e.g., Prezi video, Flipgrid, Kahoot, Quizlet, etc). Cloud storages are also addable (e.g., SharePoint, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box). Team members can have group chats where they do audio calls, meetings, share screens and editable files. I have been teaching on MS Teams since October 2020. It has been a rewarding experience.

Sawsan Ali is an English major finalizing a master's in English self-assessment at Cairo University. She has been an English teacher for 5 years teaching offline and online. Sawsan is also a Fulbright alumna: In 2019-2020, she taught Arabic as a foreign language at Mississippi Valley State University, USA. She attended and presented at a few international professional teaching conferences and received multiple local and international teacher trainings.

Jamboard - A new Flexible tool from Google

Teaching online necessitates having an online replacement for your classroom whiteboard. While Zoom and other online virtual classrooms provide whiteboards, none are flexible enough or easy enough for teachers and learners. In this mini demo, I hope to show you some of the many ways this new tool can help you and your learners create more engaging lessons.

Marisa Constantinides is a teacher, teacher educator, and ELT author; she is the Director of Studies of CELT Athens responsible for the design and implementation of all courses offered at CELT. An effective way to engage our students more deeply with the content of language-learning classes is through the use of photographs and images. In this interactive webinar we will explore principles and practices of creating unique and engaging lessons using visual input. We will investigate how teachers and students can create and use personal images in addition to sharing great sources of copyright-free images to be used in classrooms and presentations. We will share some useful practices for working with digital images. We will explore several kinds of practical in-class collaborative activities for the teaching of a variety of language skills that can be used either online or in person. The ideas in this webinar will be relevant for teachers of students of all ages and proficiency levels, and applicable to those who work in a variety of settings.

Joe McVeigh works independently offering professional development, program review, and consultant  services to English language programs. He has given workshops in the U.S. and around the world and has given webinars and served as an English Language Specialist for the U.S. Department of State. He has taught and trained teachers at universities in California and Vermont. He recently concluded his second term on the Board of Directors of the TESOL International Association. Teacher-facilitated immersive language learning

Virtual reality has been around for a while and language educators have long been exploring ways of employing this technology for language teaching and learning, hoping to make use of VR affordances such as immersion, presence, and interaction. With the latest developments in the technology, particularly the availability of more affordable, high-quality stand-alone (i.e mobile) headsets, this endeavour has become more feasible.

Most language learning VR apps are designed for a single user experience, that is the learner is alone in the VR environment, interacting with pre-programmed chat bots or recorded dialogues. Immerse is the first VR English teaching platform, in which a group of students experience things and learn together in a lesson facilitated live by a teacher in a safe environment specifically created for language learning and teaching. Teachers can use the ready-made CEFR and GSE-aligned lessons available or can use the Planning Hub to create their own interactive lessons. This is why I think teachers and language institutions should be aware of it.

I will demonstrate the Immerse teacher app and also show what the student experience looks like.

Nergiz Kern is an educational technology professional specialising in virtual reality and blended learning. She is also an editor and an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teacher. All three roles and her background and experiences, such as in photography, digital imaging, business founding, and living and working in different countries and cultures, provide her with insights that she can use in her work to help her clients, students and other teachers.

Mozilla Hubs for immersive teaching

The COVID-19 epidemic forced schools to a rapid transition to online education by experimenting with virtual platforms to replace the traditional classroom.

It was, therefore, necessary to implement augmented teaching, i.e. enriched by the use of video, audio, and images to convey stimulating educational content in new digital environments. In this 'new normal, which has undermined the classic transmissive mode of teaching, the quality of interaction between teachers and pupils has become increasingly decisive.

As shown by several recent studies and researches (Scavarelli et al., 2021), virtual reality (VR), meant as immersion through technological devices in a digital world that emulates the real one, when applied to the learning process is a valid teaching strategy aimed at actively involving students in the lesson, keeping their attention level high and their participation constant.

In this article, we describe the positive experience derived from the use of a free and easy-to-use Virtual Reality App, Mozilla Hubs, for the implementation of lessons in remote Learning or hybrid mode.

TeacherTools.Digital: Digital Language Learning Assignments for Online, Face to Face, Blended and Hybrid Classes

TeacherTools.Digital is a platform for creating and administering a range of different language teaching and testing assignments for English, Spanish, French, and German, which cover all four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

It is compatible with smartphones, tablets, desktops, and laptops, and runs on all modern browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, iOS Safari, and Microsoft Edge.

Teachers can log into the site with their Google or Microsoft account and start making assignments immediately. Students do not need to register with the site, and simply input their details when they submit an assignment, thus making onboarding super simple and easy.

When a teacher makes an assignment, a link is generated, which can be passed to students for submission. Links can also be easily posted on the LMS of your choice, including Google Classroom, Blackboard, Moodle, and many others.

In this presentation, the developer of the platform will demonstrate its main features, and explain how it can be used by teachers to create effective and engaging language learning activities in a range of different contexts.

A New Outlook for Assessment

Since the lockdown many teachers have been wondering about the best ways to assess their students through the four language skills. Teachers tried many tools and got lost in the maze. Some teachers reverted back to the usual paper-based assessment tools, while others did it online, not sure of their success while others made a hybrid not yet totally satisfied.

On the other hand, teachers need to understand the core idea behind assessment. They need to differentiate between formative and summative assessment. They need also to be aware of differentiation among their own students.

In my Presentation, I will speak about different ideas for teachers to be able to differentiate between formative and summative assessment using the new CEFR revisions. I will also discuss and show the teachers practically five successful online tools that can cut it short for teachers and help them do assessment for the four language skills as successfully as possible.

KEYNOTE

How language teachers have adapted to digital teaching

Since the first Covid lockdown in March 2020, I've been teaching groups of language trainers how to use video conferencing and online tools to enable them to continue teaching using their computers. I've seen every profile of teacher from the technophobe to the super-geek adapt their teaching style and adopt this 'new normal' way of teaching into their repertoire. This talk will present some key findings and lessons learned from my experiences with those language trainers.

Richard Osborne started teaching adult professional English in Paris in 2009. Equipped with a CELTA, DELTA and a lifetime of tinkering with computers and the internet, he represents the perfect marriage of the digital and the pedagogic (all the while remaining unbelievably modest of course). Since 2017 he has been running digital training courses with teachers and their institutions all over France and online.

Healthy body, healthy mind in the online learning

Being cognitively and physically engaged in the online classroom sounds impossible? Not anymore!

This short presentation focuses not only on ideas and tips on how to create and facilitate online learning that engages and inspires young learners but also explains the way to keep them physically active without making them feel restless and bored. It is a given fact that students spend too many hours in front of the screen with very little, if any exercise and that can cause many health problems. If we were to add some physical activity in our online classroom, our learners would feel less stressed and would be more productive. I will introduce an activity , in the form of a game, that involves movement and gives the learners a break from the screen and their desk chair. A healthy body makes a healthy mind! So, are we ready to get them moving???

Cathy Salonikidis, a TESL post graduate from Concordia University, a Cambridge Speaking Examiner, an Exam Consultant in Israel and an international ELT Conference Presenter , has been an ELT teacher in Canada, U.S., Colombia, U.K. and Greece for over 25 years. She is interested in the communicative approach in language teaching and her aim is to promote art into engaged activities.

The Gamerize Dictionary

The Gamerize Dictionary is a gamified learner dictionary, consisting of a teacher/school portal and a mobile app for students. Like a paper dictionary, It is a tool to be used alongside language learning courses, books or other activities. It allows teachers to make custom multi-staged lessons (adventures) using content from a carefully graded learner dictionary within minutes.

Based on motivation theory and some of the most compelling gamification features such as those used in Farmville and Pokemon Go, the student app helps learners to build the consistent study habit needed to succeed at learning a language.

Key features included: spaced repetition system, cutting edge voice recognition, AI guided review, RPG adventure, Mini Games and a kingdom building feature/game economy, and more.

To consolidate our knowledge regarding a new language, it is essential to have intuitive, dynamic and innovative tools that allow us to memorize specific vocabulary, optimize our oral and written level of the language; in short, those apps should offer the possibility of learning while playing. A tool that meets these requirements is Mondly, a mobile application based on virtual reality, neuroscience and gamification. Mondly promotes the learning of 41 languages through instructive micro-pills in the form of activities that fosters the enrichment of vocabulary, grammar work and the improvement of the levels of reading, writing, pronunciation and listening comprehension skills.

By downloading the application (available for IPhone, IPad and Android devices), we will have the possibility to access some free lessons and, if we wish, we can unlock all the games and levels by opting for a paid monthly or annual subscription.

Apart from allowing young people and adults training in languages with activities based on everyday situations, Mondly also has a version created for children (Mondly Kids). The children version (4-8 years old) offers a playful and interactive environment mediated by the use of recurring themes such as colors, nature, food, among others.

In 2017, Mondly was nominated by Facebook as "the application of the year" due to its many benefits and potential. In fact, it offers a very encouraging panorama for educators, students and all those who are in the process of learning languages.

We long to travel to a foreign country to immerse ourselves in language and culture. Right now though, this is not possible you may think but even when we are free to cross borders, this dream to go abroad may still be impossible for a large part of the population. Where can our learners go online and meet 'natives', go sightseeing virtually or join a conversation? How can they get in touch with others who also learn the language and telecollaborate? Where do they find interests and discussion groups to exchange language? This will be explored in an interactive presentation.

Heike Philp is CEO of let's talk online sprl, an immersive education specialist for language teaching and learning. She is co-initiator of EU funded LANCELOT (virtual classroom) and AVALON (virtual world), CAMELOT project (machinima for language teachers) and GUINEVERE (games in virtual worlds). She is founder of the Virtual Round Table Conference and co-owns EduNation in Second Life and OpenSim.

Heike Philp, CEO of let’s talk online sprl is an edtech and immersive language education integration specialist. Philp co-initiated four European funded projects on teaching and learning a language in real-time at a distance: LANCELOT (LANguage learning with CErtified Live Online Teachers), AVALON (Access to Virtual and Action Learning live ONline) and CAMELOT (CreAting Machinima Empowers Live Online language Teaching and learning) and GUINEVERE (Games Used IN Engaging Virtual Environments for Realtime language Education). Philp founded and organizes several web conferences, Virtual Round Table (language learning technologies) DaFWEBKON (teachers of German), SLanguages Annual Symposium. She co-owns EduNation islands in Second Life.

Georgia Maneta is a state Primary School teacher of English. She holds a BA in English Language and Literature from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and an MA in Literature in English from Dalarna University, Sweden. She, also, works as an oral assessor of English for the State Certificate in Greece and other Examination Boards. She is a volunteer in YFU (Youth For Understanding) and a member of the Executive Board of the GMRT (Global Matrix Reader’s Theater). She is a newly appointed ambassador of eTwinning (a European platform where schools from all over Europe co-operate on various projects) She is interested in theatre, cinema, reading and educational technology and likes meeting people from all over the world.
