VPN Setup for Windows (OpenVPN)
BEFORE YOU BEGIN: you must enroll a device in Augsburg’s Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) platform in order to use VPN services. See https://sites.augsburg.edu/it/mfa-faq/mfa-device/
Configuring OpenVPN
You must download and import your account’s unique VPN config file into the OpenVPN application in order to connect to the Augsburg VPN
- Go to https://vpn-portal.augsburg.edu/
- Sign in with your Augsburg username and password
- You’ll receive an authentication request from the Duo Mobile app on your phone. Approve the login request.
- Click the first Download for Windows, macOS, Linux link (which is compatible with OpenVPN Connect v2 clients):

- Your VPN config file will download to your computer (if prompted to save the file, choose to save it).
- From the Start menu launch OpenVPN (or OpenVPN GUI)

- If you encounter a “No readable connection profile” dialog, click OK.
- In the system tray (near the clock), right-click on the OpenVPN icon and click Import file…

- Select the file you just downloaded (likely in your downloads folder) and click Open.
- Click OK on the File imported successfully prompt.
- In the system tray (near the clock), right-click on the OpenVPN icon and choose Connect
- Enter your Augsburg Username and Password
Note: Hardware token MFA users only enter “password, passcode” - Do NOT ‘save password’
If you save your password the VPN will often attempt to reconnect on its own - including when the computer is asleep - meaning you will get Duo Mobile authentication requests even though you haven’t tried to connect. This often causes Duo account lockouts. - Click OK to initiate the VPN connection.
- On your phone look for the Duo Mobile authentication request notification and choose Approve
You’re all set!
