Setup Requirements

• All classes have to be part of the Creative Club Discord. If you’re not part of the Creative Club Discord and want to create your own class, then join this Discord, Creative Club Discord. You can find the listing of Maker Pen Class events as well as additional information here: MakerPenClass
• All classes that get rewards must adhere to the rules

• All teachers must have a good reputation
• Number of Teachers allowed:

• 3 Teachers(Head Teacher + 2 CoTeachers)
• 4 Teachers(Professor(50 hours) + 3 CoTeachers)

• Must follow the Rec Room Code of Conduct
• Must have a clear, laid-out class plan
• Students must present a new final project ^room to graduate

• Minimum of 2 weeks for course
• Maximum of 8 weeks for course
• Minimum of 2 hours per week
• Maximum of 8 hours per week
• Minimum of 5 class meetings
• Must have at least 10 students enrolled
• You must be 13 years of age or older to submit a class
• You must have a public Discord server for the class

Setting Up Your Class

Basic Course Information

•  Class Name
•  Class Description
•  Class Room (Ex: ^MyClassRoom)
•  Course Length in Weeks
•  Start Date
•  Weekly Schedule (Example: Mon Wed Fri)
•  Class Time/Time Zone (Ex: 7PM EST or 1800 CET)
•  Class Length in Hours (Ex: 2 hour class)
•  Discord Name (Ex: Maker Pen Art)
•  No Expiration Discord Link (Ex: https://discord.gg/5MPPwXW)

Additional Optional Information

• General Availability (When you can be reached by students)
• Detailed Course Summary (Week 1: Intro to… Week 2: Tubes!)
• Additional Teacher Information (Display Name, @name)
• Reference Material for Your Students

Setting Up Your Discord

 Please use this Discord template as the basis for your class discord.  It contains all the basic channels/roles for a class:

 Every class is required to have a public Discord server.  This allows persistent communication between the teachers and students to coordinate class activities, preserve communication, and to serve as a central meeting place for students to access needed information.

Permissions

 Once you have created your class server, you will want to configure the permissions settings.  Permissions define where a Discord user can participate in the chat server.  It also defines which channels they can see. These links explain how to setup and use permissions:

Roles

 After you have an understanding of how permissions in Discord function, you can start to utilize them by creating channels with specific permissions and access.  To do this, you need to assign Roles. Some examples are:

• Split your students into groups, each could be given a group role and have access to a specific class chat channel
• Teachers need a role to access a teacher-only chat channel
• Teachers need a role to send messages in an announcement channel
• Mark students that have graduated with a role

Channels

 Channels in Discord allow for information to be organized into specific areas.  This link explains how to make Role Exclusive channels.

Some channels that we require are:

• Course Information (Class Plan/Overview of Class)
• #announcements (for general class announcements)
• #Schedule (Should contain the overall schedule and weekly schedule you submitted and function like an announcements channel and not get updated unless absolutely necessary.)
• Class-related discussion

Channels (cont)

Here are some suggested channels:

• Teachers-only
• Welcome (Make users react to a message to gain a role to chat in other parts of the discord)
• Off-topic
• General chat
• Frequently Asked Questions
• Reference Material
• Different Role Exclusive Class channels

 The more organized your Class Discord is, the easier it will be for students and others to find information about your class.  We suggest not having too many off-topic or general channels in your class Discord.

Class Events

 We want teachers to use the Rec Room Event system to schedule each class session. It allows students to set an in-game reminder that is displayed in their local time/date.  Using the Event system for each class session will also allow you to easily keep track of:

• How long your session is scheduled for
• How many classes you’ve taught
• What date it is happening
• Who is planning on attending
• Photos of class progress and attendance for each session

 We utilize photos of or from Teachers during class events to verify their presence when calculating teaching hours earned.

RRStudio Class Sessions

 Since not all instruction in a RRStudio class can take place in a Rec Room event, they are not expected to meet using Rec Room Events for lessons that show the instructor creating and using RRStudio. Instead, Class Sessions will be held in the Class Discord utilizing either:

• Discord Broadcast
• By uploading videos of class lessons to a public video sharing platform(such as YouTube.com) and then sharing and/or giving instruction with the video during a scheduled class session.

 There are many options available for Broadcast software outside of Discord.  One option is OBS (Open Broadcast Software), but we expect you to use your best discretion when making this choice and do not endorse any particular software.

 RRStudio classes will ultimately be required to upload their class sessions to a video sharing platform for Teaching credit.  Those links will be shared with the Class’s Sponsor for verification through the normal channels. Credit will be given based on a Teacher’s presence during the lesson recording, or in the case of just 1 Teacher, the recording itself.

 Lessons that use regular Rec Room Events will be shared through the same channels.
