Dear Students and Parents,

It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that we announce the upcoming season for the North Lincoln Winterguard!  This ensemble is dedicated to providing the students of North Lincoln High School with the highest level of dance instruction, performance opportunities, and teamwork. Students will learn professional caliber dance routines and equipment choreography from top Charlotte-area guard educators, and compete with high quality groups from other schools from North Carolina and South Carolina.

What is Winterguard?

Competitive winterguard is an incredible performance opportunity that originated from drum corps. Winterguard ensembles function similar to the color guard found in most high school marching bands.  They learn choreography and drill just like in marching band, but perform their shows on a special tarp in a gymnasium.  Groups compete in different circuits based on resources and ability, and are grouped in “classes” based on similar criteria.  More importantly, winterguard units provide students the opportunity to focus on dance and performance related techniques.

Requirements of membership

In order to qualify for NL Winterguard membership, students must pass an audition, be in good standing both academically and financially, and demonstrate a willing attitude and good work ethic.  Middle school students who have participated in marching band are eligible, but must be approved by the high school director.  All NL Winterguard members should adhere to the attached schedule and practice/stretch regularly at home.

Auditions will be held on Monday, November 9, Tuesday, November 10, Thursday, November 12, and Friday, November 13 at North Lincoln High School from 3:45pm-5:30pm. Contracts to be a member of the NL Winterguard will be given after the final audition day. The $50.00 deposit is due by Friday, November 20.  All prospective members are required to attend all audition days in order to get the most instruction! The auditions are formal… while previous experience in color guard is not a requirement, students must show knowledge for basic equipment spinning and demonstrate their ability to learn choreography.  They will be assessed by the North Lincoln Colorguard staff.  Students who are offered a spot will be given a contract to sign.  All audition results are made by the North Lincoln Colorguard staff, and are final.

Rehearsals and Equipment

The North Lincoln Winter Guard will rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm-7:30pm at North Lincoln High School or Pumpkin Center Elementary School. Location will be known well in advance.  All equipment will be purchased through the school… students will be responsible for uniforms and makeup.  Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from rehearsals. Transportation on competition days will be determined based on factors such as distance and performance times.

Fees and Fundraising

Lincoln County Schools does not provide any funding for a group of this nature, and because of the need to hire choreographers and staff, there will be a membership fee of $250 fee to be paid in installments throughout the season.  The fee can be broken down in installments due on the dates below:

$50 due Friday, November 20 – this fee reserves a student’s spot in the ensemble and allows us to pay required entry fees for competitions

$75 due Friday,  December 18

$75 due Friday, January 15

$100 due Friday, February 19

Payments are due on these dates unless you have spoken with the directors prior to the date.

Schedule and Travel

NL Winterguard will be participating this year in Carolina Winter Ensemble Association (CWEA), a competitive circuit consisting of schools and independent lines from North Carolina and South Carolina. CWEA’s competition schedule has not been released at this time and will be communicated to members when finalized. CWEA has also planned on extending the season into May. This year may contain a mixture of virtual and in-person competitions.  An official schedule is included in this letter.  All rehearsals and performances are mandatory for membership; failure to adhere to the schedule and/or excessive absences will result in expulsion from the group WITHOUT tuition refunds.

Final Thoughts

We are very fortunate to offer this ensemble to the students of North Lincoln, and that our administration is in support of this organization.  We hope that this group will promote a safe and accepting environment for our performing students, and that it will strengthen the Band of Knights!  All members are expected to act in a dignified and professional manner at all times while traveling and performing with the group.  It is important to remember that each student represents themselves, their family and friends, the Band of Knights and North Lincoln High School.  Students who cannot act in a mature manner and make wise decisions will be dealt with by Mr. Still, and ultimately dropped from the group WITHOUT refunds.

We hope that this experience will be an enjoyable one for all students, parents, directors and staff!  We hope to see you out cheering on the North Lincoln Winter Guard!
