Hello, Warriors!  Today is February 14, 2020 (Happy Valentine’s Day!) and these are your daily announcements

Career Center students the Career Center is closed on February 21st.  You should report to BCW during your BCW scheduled classes only.

There will be an open house at the Career Center on February 20th at 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM.  Any student wanting to learn more about the Career Center feel free to stop by and visit.  All program choices will be available to explore.

Are you interested in a career in the skilled trades? Did you know that union apprenticeship training is paid for by the union and participants graduate debt free! Come find out about the many different apprenticeship opportunities that are available in our region, and how you can get a head start in this amazing career pathway!  The meeting will take place on March 3, 2020 at First Presbyterian Church of Bay City, 805 Center Avenue, Bay City from 6-7:30pm.  Please call Ann Marie Batkowski at 989-399-7418 to RSVP as seating is limited.

The Bay City Rotary Club's "Rotary Youth Leadership Award" [RYLA] Camp every year  invites, upon the recommendation of their school, a youth from each Bay City high school, to attend an intense and fun leadership training experience at Camp Rotary near Clare, Michigan. This year the dates for the camp are June 14-18, 2020. They are looking for the best and brightest; those who already show leadership potential and would be excellent representatives of WHS . Typically these are current Juniors although sometimes current Freshmen and Sophomores could be considered. Their club fully funds this camp, other than the costs that might be incurred for personal belongings and the required physical examination.We also provide transportation to and from Camp Rotary.If interested in applying, please see your counselor for an application.

Paid Summer Research Experience Opportunity at SVSU - Consider applying to be a paid summer intern for the Dow Science and Sustainability Education Center (DSSEC).  High school students are welcome to apply for an opportunity to participate in scientific research during the summer with SVSU faculty. SVSU faculty will be directing projects in the areas of biochemistry, biology, chemistry, and engineering; however, each project is closely aligned with the Saginaw Bay Environmental Science Institute (SBESI). In addition to being paid, you will get 4 free credits to use at SVSU the following year. The summer internship will occur during SVSU’s summer term:  June 29 - August 6, 2020. There are volunteer opportunities for St Patrick's Day Parade, library aides, Concessions, Fun Fairs and Mother Son Bowling.  The board is updated daily so stop in to see!!

Do you need extra help in your math class? Join us for math lab after school from 2:15-3:15 pm; Tuesday in Mrs. Dominowski’s room – B214, Wednesday in Mrs. Bertalan’s room – B213, or Thursday in Mr. Taylor’s room – B210.

Students we have 12 open spots for the yoga and mindfulness club which begins February 20th.  Please, get a flyer in the counseling office to sign up if you are interested.  We have one spot open for the cookie decorating club starting on February 24th.  There will be a waiting list for those that wish to join in the event of a cancellation.  Again, flyers are in the counseling office.  

The Auburn Library is hosting a Winter 2020 Reading Program. The program runs through February 29, 2020. To participate in this program, pick up a reading log and return it to the Auburn Library when completed (8 hours of reading or listening to audiobooks). There will be a drawing among all entries received and the winner will get a Kindle Fire HD 10 tablet. Additional completed logs will be entered in a drawing for a $10 Visa gift card. This program is open to people of all ages.

The Covenant HealthCare Foundation for Legal Dependent of a Covenant Healthcare Employee is offering four $2000 scholarships. Applicants must be a legal dependent of a current Covenant HealthCare employee, intend to pursue an undergraduate academic degree in any curriculum by fall, and have a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 (non-weighted) scale. Applications are available in the counseling center and are due by February 28, 2020.

The Mid-Michigan Section of AIChE Scholarship Opportunity in Chemical Engineering is now available. High school seniors residing in the Great Lakes Bay region who plan to major in chemical engineering there is a renewable scholarship awarding $2000 over the course of four years for the study of chemical engineering. You must plan to attend a college or university of your choice with an undergraduate chemical engineering program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The Dow Corning Foundation – SVSU – Community STEM Partnership Scholarship is available to incoming full-time SVSU freshmen whose K-12 school district participated in the Dow Corning Foundation/SVSU Community STEM Partnership Program and are pursuing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) major. Essay responses will be given significant consideration in the selection process, so applicants are strongly encouraged to do their best work. Awards may be renewed for an additional year assuming the student continues full-time enrollment and remains in good academic standing at SVSU. 

Award = $1,000

The Dennis Wirgowski Football Camp Scholarship is now available. Applicants must be graduating in 2020 and plan to study a health related field. Selection criterion is heavily weighted on service to your high school.  Financial need is not a consideration. Applications are available in the counseling center and are due April 18, 2020.

Last year, MEA awarded 46 scholarships totaling $53,300 ($1,550 scholarships to 22 new winners and $800 scholarships to 24 returning college students). They have not yet determined the number and amount of scholarships for 2020. Please direct eligible applicants to  https://mea.org/mea-scholarship/ to access the application. The application can be typed into, saved and then printed for signature to be mailed with the required documentation. If applicants are unable to fill out the application electronically, legible handwritten applications are acceptable.  Deadline is February 20, 2020.

The Scottish Rite Masons Scholarship is now available in the counseling center. Students should have a family member that belongs to the Masonic group. Applications are due February 22, 2020.

 

New Beginnings Scholarship Skilled trade careers are in high demand in Michigan but the cost of starting a profession in this field can be expensive. But we want to help. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in a trade by attending a career technical education program, we want to help you get a fresh start. The Rosa  Parks ($2000) Scholarship is now available at  rosaparksscholarship.org. Eligibility Requirements include:

Winners are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, financial need and dedication to the civil rights principles of Rosa L. Parks, The deadline for filing is March 1, 2020.  Scholarship winners will be announced in mid-May.

2020 National Spirit of Youth Scholarship - Five scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each will be awarded in 2020 must be a senior in High School and a Junior member of the ALA since 2017, and continued during the four-year scholarship period. 2020 National Non-Traditional Student Scholarship - One per geographic division—total of five scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each will be awarded in 2020 must be a current member of the AL, ALA, SAL since 2018, 2019 and for calendar year 2020. 2020 National Children of Warriors Scholarship - Three per geographic division -total of fifteen scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each will be awarded in 2020 must be a descendent of a veteran during eligibility dates for membership in the AL and attending a 4-year college/university. Eagle Scout Scholarship: Boy scouts who are members of an American Legion, Department of Michigan post troop and have obtained the level of eagle scout or are the descendant of American Legion members may apply.  The winner at the department level receives a $1,000 scholarship and is advanced to the national level for consideration for Eagle Scout of the Year and a $10,000 scholarship. McCabe Charitable Foundation is now accepting applications for scholarships. Applicants must be Jewish or Presbyterian from Bay, Saginaw or Midland County, show financial need and plan to enroll full-time at Delta or SVSU for next school year. Applications are available at http://sms.scholarshipamerica.org/pnc . Applications are due by March 16, 2020.

The J. Russell and Gladys Irene Carmell Scholarship fund is now accepting scholarship applications. Applicants must be US Citizens that have resided in the Tri-county, MI for a minimum of 4 years prior of application and plan to enroll full –time in a 2  or 4 year college or university or vocational-technical school for the entire next school year leading to a nursing degree. Applications are available at http://sms.scholarshipamerica.org/pnc . Applications are due by March 16, 2020.

The Lori Winchell hall monitor scholarship application is now available in the counseling center. This $250 scholarship is designated for a WHS senior who has a Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or lower OR be a student with special needs or accommodations (504 students, special education students and students with disabilities). Applications are available in the counseling center and are due by March 26, 2020.

The Bay City Morning Rotary Club, a business oriented service club will award five (5) $1,000 scholarships to Bay County high school students in 2020. In addition, using the weighted criteria noted below the student receiving the greater score will be awarded the $1,500 John Shankool Scholarship. The Bay City Morning Rotary Club will be accepting only applications submitted electronically to Emily@serenusjohnson.com. In the counseling office you will find a copy of the application to complete. Your counselor or Principal is required to sign and complete Part I and II. These pages and copies of your transcript and ACT/SAT scores will need to be scanned and submitted electronically to the email address above by Friday, March 27, 2020. The selected awardees will be notified by our Scholarship Committee in late April and you will be required to attend a Thursday morning, Bay City Morning Rotary Club meeting sometime in May to receive your award. Applications are available in the counseling center.

The Ronald F Selk Scholarships are now available. There are three scholarships valued at $1500, $100 and $500. Applicants must be a member of Sunrise Family Credit Union and have proof of acceptance into a college, university or trade school. Applications are available in the counseling center and are due by March 31, 2020 no later than 5 pm

William G. Coyne Memorial Scholarship Program - To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

The Home Builders Association of Saginaw is offering a building trades scholarship. It is offered to students that will be participating in a trades-related field of study. The scholarship is available to high school and adult part time students who are or will be working in the industry, or full time students. Scholarships are awarded based on career goals, work experience, and/or community service. There is NO grade point average minimum. Applications are available in the counseling center and are due by April 10, 2020.

The LEADS! Scholarship program applications are now available in the counseling center. There are over 125 scholarships totaling over $200,000 for seniors only. Applications are due by April 10, 2020

The Auburn-Williams Lions Club is dedicated to serving the City of Auburn and Williams Township communities as is reflected in our motto "We Serve". One way to serve our community is by investing in the future of our young adults. The Auburn-Williams Lions Club will award a one-time $500 scholarship to a student who most reflects the meaning of what it means to be a Lion and has made plans to attend a college or trade school after graduation. All 2019 graduating students from Bay City Western High School are encouraged to apply. The scholarship, made out to the student's school, will be announced and awarded at the Senior Year End Assembly. For consideration, applicants must be a 2019 graduating senior of Bay City Western High School. Applications are available in the counseling center and must be submitted by April 15, 2020.

The Josh Jasman Scholarship Committee would like to invite all seniors to apply for one of three $3,000 scholarships that will be awarded this year. All applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2020.  Applications are available in the counseling center and must be filled out complete with a copy of your transcript. They have had to disqualify applicants in the past for not signing, parent not signing, or not having a copy of their transcript. This scholarship is not awarded based on GPA or need, but in how they answer the informal questions. There is a minimum GPA requirement of 2.0.

Beaver Fire and Rescue Auxiliary is offering their annual scholarships. Applicants must resident in Beaver Township. Essay required.  Applications are available in the counseling center and are due by May 1, 2020.

2020 Michigan Past Presidents Parley Medical Scholarship - Scholarships in the amount of $500 to apply toward the expense of tuition for training men & women for medical careers must be a descendent of a veteran during eligibility dates for membership in the AL, and a resident in the State of Michigan.
