Teams that license Video Pro may opt in to TruMedia’s video share at no additional cost.
TruMedia will facilitate the video access exchange for all participating teams via the TruMedia site. Beyond opting in, nothing needs to be done by the team or video coordinators.
The initial rollout will exclusively involve BATS video, and the long-term plan is to be video platform independent, allowing you to share video with other teams regardless of their video software.
Which teams are currently participating?
As of the start of the 2021 season, the Dodgers, Braves, Pirates, Reds, Giants, Phillies, Tigers, Angels and Rangers are participating in the video share.
Additional teams may be added during the 2021 season. All teams that license TruMedia’s Video Pro package are given the opportunity to opt into the share.
Teams that are still trialing the Video Pro package can NOT opt in since we cannot guarantee that their video will stay available through the end of the season to the other participating teams.
What is shared by default?
The primary video angle (ex: BATS A angle)
MiLB regular-season and postseason games for 2019 and beyond
Spring Training games for 2019 and beyond
Only games involving the sharing team’s affiliate will be shared. If you upload a game from another team, it will NOT be shared, only games that one of your affiliates played in will be shared.
Can other video angles be shared?
Yes!
By default we won’t turn on any other angles beyond what’s described above, but any video angles that both teams mutually agree to can be shared.
Copy people from both teams that would like to share additional angles
Have the team that didn’t send the original email reply to confirm they agree
Specify the exact angles that will be exchanged. For example, both teams will send A-D at all levels of play.
While it’s not exchanged by default, you can exchange MLB video from your games.
We can limit what angles are exchanged by level of play (though not by leagues within a level of play).
We can support more complex requests as well. For example, if one team combines the L/R open side views into two BATS videos and another keeps them separate in four BATS videos we can still exchange those as long as everyone agrees.
Video Angle Naming
TruMedia can rename your video angles in the UI if there is a one-to-one mapping of the BATS video angle and the name you’d like the UI to show. This one-to-one mapping must be true for all games at all levels of play for your BATS data, but does not apply to the video angles you receive via the share. Those angles can be named separately. So for example, if “BATS B” is always the open side view of a right-handed batter, we can have the UI label the angle “RHH Side” or something similar that you specify.
Security
When video is shared between teams, the video is passed through TruMedia’s web servers. This ensures:
No other team can see the URLs to your BATS server
That all requests for your video are authenticated by TruMedia
That any attempt to play video angles beyond what are shared will be blocked
Timing
TruMedia crawls for available video roughly every hour. As soon as new video is found, it is linked on the TruMedia site. The video for all angles immediately becomes available for the team that provided the video. The primary angle (generally BATS A angle) also immediately becomes available for all teams participating in the video share as well as all other mutually agreed upon additional shared video angles.
Can this data and video be ingested into internal systems?
We currently do not provide API access to batch download the BATS video as some teams have expressed concern about overloading their BATS servers.
There are several possible ways to facilitate further integration, but all would be future projects not available in 2021:
One option is to facilitate importing the data into each other's BATS systems. That would require coordination with Sydex which we could look into if that would be valuable.
Another option is to mimic MLB’s video API so teams could pull in the video similar to the MLB provided coaches video.
We could also explore other shared hosting options with MLB and Google if that would be of interest.
