Nidda 20a-b: Group Activities

...Others point to the importance of not separating oneself from community norms and behaviors, quoting Masekhet Derekh Eretz (Chapter 7) where we learn:

“A person should not rejoice among mourners nor mourn among those rejoicing. He should not remain awake when all are asleep nor sleep when all are awake. He should not stand when others are sitting nor sit when others are standing. The general rule being: A person should not deviate from the behaviors of his friends.”

This is, of course, only if the intention of his friends is positive, and if so he should abandon his own preferences to accommodate those of the group. (steinsaltz.org)

In the Beginning

If Mr. Sullivan could have predicted the first cell phone 30 years before the first cell-phone launching in 1983, how can one doubt the ability of the 3 very special guests of Avraham & Sarah to foretell the upcoming birth of a baby boy, one year ahead.

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Parasha: Yayera - Bereshit (Genesis) 18:1-22:24

Historical Context: Location: Erets Kna’an - Elone Mamre, Sdom and ’Amora, Negev, Mount Moriah, back to Be'er Sheva’. Creation Time: Beginning of the third millennium. General Calendar: 1700's bce.

Parashort: Avraham rushes off to prepare a meal for three guest-angels who appear in the desert heat. One of the three announces that, in exactly one year, the barren Sarah will give birth to a son. Sarah laughs. Avraham pleads with G-d to spare the wicked city of Sodom. Two of the three angels arrive in the doomed city, where Avraham's nephew, Lot, extends his  hospitality to them and protects them from the evil intentions of a Sodomite mob. The two guests reveal that they have come to overturn the place, and to save Lot and his family. Lot's wife turns into a pillar of salt when she disobeys the command not to look back at the burning city as they flee. Avraham move to Gerar follows an encounter with the Philistine king Avimelekh. G-d remembers His promise to Sarah and gives her and Avraham a son, who is named Yitsḥak (Issac). Yitshak is circumcised at the age of eight days; Avraham is 100 years old, and Sarah 90, at their child's birth. Hagar and Yishma’el are banished from Avraham's home and wander in the desert; G-d hears the cry of Yishmael lad and saves his life by showing his mother a well. Avimelekh makes a treaty with Avraham at Be'er Sheva’. G-d tests Avraham's devotion by commanding him to sacrifice Yitsḥak on Mount Moriah. At the last moment, a voice from heaven calls Avraham to stop. A ram, caught in the undergrowth by its horns, is offered in Yitshak's place. Avraham receives the news of the birth of a daughter, Rivka to his nephew Bethuel. (torah.org)

Haftara: Vayera - Melakhim Bet (Kings 2), 4:1-26

Haftit: A poor widow complains to Elisha’ that she has no money to pay her debt to the Israelite King Aḥ’av & his evil Queen Ezevel’s (Jezebel) son. Her deceased husband was the prophet Ovadia, minister to King Aḥ’av. Ovadia had spent all his money on oil for the lamps that lit the two caves that hid the last 100 prophets from the evil King Aḥ’av and his evil wife Ezevel (Jezebel). Elisha’ asks the widow if she has anything of value and she replies that the only thing she has left is a pitcher with a little oil. He requests that the widow bring as many empty pitchers as she can to him. Elisha’ miraculously enables the small amount of oil in her pitcher to fill many pitchers. Then, by selling the oil she is able to repay her debt and still have money to live on.

Connection to the Parasha: Just like Avraham and Sara, the Shunamite woman & her husband were old & childless. In both cases, G-d miraculously granted them a child. (haftorahman)

Biblical Quiz: Vayera

Kids: How many sons did Sarah have? What was his name?

Teenagers: How many angel-men came to Avraham? How many went to Lot?

Adults: When Avraham went to sacrifice Yits’hak, how many servants did he have with him? How many donkeys?

Speechless in the Parasha: Vayera

Read both laugh accounts: Avraham’s in Lekh Lekha and Sarah’s in our parasha, vayera. Are they the same laughs?

The Weekly Riddle w/ Ktav Tora - Vayera

“If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live.” - Is this saying, which is attributed to Albert Einstein, true?

(Guess before you take a peek. The answer is on the back page.)

In the Good News

- Israel has became in October 1 of 17 countries part of the prestigious Wine Spectator 39th Annual New York Wine Experience. The magazine’s editors and critics taste every year the best wines in the world and rank them with a score of 90 points or higher being considered an excellent and quite rare. This year only 273 wines from all over the world and of all styles and methods received a score of 90 and above. Among which are 3 proud Israeli wines:

* Recanati Carignan Judean Hills Wild Reserve 2016 (scored 90)

* Golan Heights - Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon Galilee Yarden 2014 (91)

* Tabor Cabernet Sauvignon Galilee Malkiya 2014 (91)

This tells us that Israeli wine it’s no only synonymous to “kosher” and “kiddush” but also to ingenuity, quality and pride.

Rega’ shel Ivrit - רגע של עברית

Winter is here and with it comes winter clothings.

Some clothes have distinct Hebrew words, such as:

“coat” for which we have “מְעִיל - mə’il“ or “אֵדֶר - eder” - a beautiful word! Or “gloves” for which we use “כְּפָפוֹת - kfafot”

Other words on the other hand are less clear. For instance: How do we say in Hebrew Sweater and Shawl and Vest?

Most Hebrew speakers would say: “This is easy: Sveder-סוודר and shal-שָׁל and vest - וֶסְט.”

Indeed, easy but this is not Hebrew :)

Here comes into play the Academy of the Hebrew ךanguage which gives us, a few nice hebrew words:

For sweater: סֻרְגָּה - surga

For shawl: רְדִיד - rədid

For vest: אֲפֻדָּה - afuda (which is a sweater without sleeves. Afuda with buttons or zipper is לְסוּטָה - ləsuta.)

For handkerchief: סוּדָר - sudar (to cover head or neck, but for the nose is מִמְחָטָה - mimḥata. Another word for fabric to cover the head is מִטְפַּחַת - mitpaḥat)

For tights: צְמוּדוֹנִים - tsmudonim

And for scarf: צָעִיף - tsa’if (originally the word meant thin fabric to cover face)

So while we start using these new Hebrew words, let’s remember also to dress-up warmly, and elegantly :)

Biblical Quiz - Answers - Vayera

Kids: One son. Yitsak. * Teenagers: Three came to Avraham but only two went to Lot. * Adults: Two servants and one donkey.

Riddle Solved - Ktav Torah: Vayera

Between 2007-2013 more than 10 million honeybee hives were lost, often to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), nearly twice the normal rate of loss. CCD is the phenomenon that occurs when the majority of worker bees in a colony disappear and leave behind a queen, plenty of food and a few nurse bees to care for the remaining immature bees... A sort of adolescent rebellion or a socialist protest :)

CCD is not new and was first documented in 1869. But the recent mass loss of hives created a global unfounded fear of a disaster to human’s food cycle. Unfounded, because CCD affects only honeybees which are just 1 of more than 240 bee species. Wild bees are not being hit by CCD. Also, bees are not the only pollinators. Hover flies, butterflies, hummingbirds and even bats do it too.

So, why would a genius say that?!

While, there is no clear evidence that Einstein once said that “If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live”, maybe he did say that and used the word “bees” as a general term for all pollinator insects.

***

This could possibly help us understand Avraham. When Avimelekh King of Gərar asks him about Sarah, Avraham is afraid to say that she is his wife and replies “Aoti hi” - “she is my sister.” Later on, when Avimelekh confronts him about his “lie” Avraham explains that she is indeed his sister, but they don’t share the same mother, only the same father.

Avraham answer however contradicts the teh sages’ view that Sarah was the daughter of Haran, Avraham’s brother.

How could she have been at the same time Avraham’s sister?! Rashi explains that it was accepted back then to refer to your niece also as “sister” and brings a proof from Avraham referring to his cousin Lot as brother: “Ki anashim aim ananu” - “since we are men brothers.”

So, while Avraham seem to sacrifice Sarah for the sake of his own safety, he possibly did not lie by calling her “sister”.

Shabbat shel shalom, Aim vaAayot :) tbs
