Melva Craft-Blacksheare, DNP, MS, RN, CNM

Assistant Professor

Dr. Craft-Blacksheare is an Assistant Professor of Nursing in the School of Health Professions and Studies. She has a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Oakland University, a MSN from Case Western University, A Certificate in Nurse Midwifery from Frontier University, a MS in Health Care Administration from the University of Detroit, an ADN from Highland Park College, and a BGS from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor.  She is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and practices in the Metro Detroit area as a Centering Pregnancy facilitator with the St John Providence Health System (SJPHS). Dr. Craft-Blacksheare has been working in the health care field for over thirty four years, the last 20 as a CNM.

TEACHING

Dr. Craft-Blacksheare is the lead faculty for the undergraduate Maternity Nursing (NUR 330) course as well as the elective Issues in Women’s Health (NUR 351).  She also co-chairs DNP student research projects (NUR 903).

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP

The primary interest and focus of Dr. Craft-Blacksheare’s research has been on topics of women’s health including disease prevention and health promotion. She is presently conduction a study to enhance clinical competency with Maternity nursing students using the Simulation Lab.

SERVICE

Dr. Craft-Blacksheare serves on the Curriculum committee, Student Concerns Committee, and is an Advisory member of the Women’s Educational Center. She is a Co-chair for the A.C.T.S (A Chance to Succeed) Mentoring Program. She is on the Steering Committee of Genesys Hospital Centering Pregnancy.  Working with the Maternity Professionals at Hurley Medical Center she is facilitating a relationship for their development of Centering Pregnancy with the SJPHS.  Dr. Craft-Blacksheare is a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), Association of Women’s Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), and the Greater Flint Black Nurses Association (GFBNA). For the last three years Dr. Craft-Blacksheare has been the Project Director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant; New Careers In Nursing.
