Coastal highway travel between Oregon and California resumed Thursday night.

An update from the Oregon Department of Transportation said the Redwood Highway, U.S. 199, reopened on the California side of the border, south of Gasquet.

Motorists should expect one-way traffic and delays. Crews are on-site to ensure safe passage through the area. A 13-mile section of the highway had been closed for hours after a rockslide blocked travel.

Republican legislative leaders reacted following a Special Session of the Oregon State Legislature on Thursday to authorize funds to pay for outstanding bills incurred by the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office during the 2024 wildfire season.

House Republican Leader Christine Drazan addressed the passage of SB 5801, which was passed to pay for those costs. Drazan said, “I am grateful for legislative leaders and members of the legislature for coming together in a bipartisan manner to meet our obligation to pay our firefighters for helping keep our communities safe this year”. Drazan said, “We look forward to the work ahead to address how we manage our public lands and mitigate future wildfires”.

Senate Republican Leader Daniel Bonham said, “While it was necessary to address the state’s unpaid bills, this special session only treated the symptoms of a much larger problem. The real issue is decades of agency mismanagement and ineffective policies that fail to address the root causes of these devastating fires”. Bonham said, “ODF’s leadership must improve its performance and take responsibility for allowing these issues to persist. Governor Kotek must step up and use her leadership to drive the necessary reforms at the agency so we’re not constantly reacting after disaster strikes”.

The legislation passed allocated $218 million to cover the costs of this year’s wildfires. A record over 1.9 million acres burned during the 2024 wildfire season.

On Wednesday, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation at their weekly business meeting, calling upon all citizens of the county to observe National Guard Day, in celebration of the National Guard’s 388th birthday Friday.

A county release said the commissioners were honored to recognize the men and women who bravely serve our communities and national in the Army National Guard.

Before he read the proclamation, Board Chair Commissioner Chris Boice said, “This might be the best Commissioners meeting ever. Because for the first time since I have been in office, we have nothing on the agenda other than to honor veterans”. Boice said, “We know that the U.S. National Guard is the oldest military organization in America and its members respond to state and national emergencies, military conflicts, natural disasters, and also conduct search and rescue operations”. Boice said, “We are especially proud to honor members of Roseburg’s Charlie Company unit, who represent Oregon National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry Regiment for the invaluable work that they do”.

Commissioner Tim Freeman presented proclamation certificates to a number of Charlie Company members that were in attendance at the meeting. Certificates were also given to National Guard Family Readiness Group Coordinators, Carol Hunt, Valerie West and Cindy Houston.

Captain Casy Coulter presented the commissioners with framed artwork of the Oregon National Guard 1st Battalion, 186th Infantry Regiment colors and a Battalion challenge coin from the Battalion Commander with a statement that means “Guardians of the Western Gate”.

A H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate phase participant is collecting needed kitchen items for Peace at Home Advocacy Center programs.

The Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court program is prepping for their 108th graduation on February 3rd at 5:15 p.m. in the Community Hall building at the fairgrounds. Graduate hopeful Kristy Parham is seeking kitchen items to make baskets for Peace at Home’s shelter and housing programs.

Peace at Home has been a community based non-profit agency serving the county since 1978. The Youth Housing campus will include a shared pantry facility, daytime drop-in center, overnight shelter options, transitional housing units for young adults, and Tasha’s House LGTBQ services. As the program is ramping up with full services in 2025 for their campus, kitchen items are typically not part of grants or donations received.

Parham is taking this opportunity for her community project to ask for new or gently used items needed for kitchen spaces. Parham said, “This project is special because of the help received for my daughter by Peace at Home”. Parham plans to have a table and sit in front of the Roseburg Grocery Outlet this Saturday with her poster, suggested items list and a donation box for those who want to purchase and drop off items.

Donation boxes to drop off items are available at:
