Element Video

• Summary: Students will create a video to show their research of a specific element.

• Subject and Grade Level: Integrated Science (Physical Science)--used for 9th Grade, could be used at any High School level

• Student Learning Objectives: Students will be able to show their research of a specific element.  Students are unsure exactly what the elements are so this introduces them up close and personal to a specific element, its characteristics and its usefulness.  They can’t become an expert on all elements but they can become an expert on one element.

• We watched videos about some of the different groups of elements when we discussed them.  It also grabs the students’ attention by showing how reactive some of them are.

• DIRECT INSTRUCTION: 

• The students were given notes over the concepts of atoms and elements.

• GUIDED PRACTICE:

• The students were given worksheets with guiding questions to help them learn and understand the important parts of atoms, elements, and the periodic table.

• INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:

• Students were given directions on the requirements of their projects and how the project would be graded.

ELEMENT PROJECT

You have been learning about atoms and the information you can get off of the periodic table.  In class we will continue to learn about trends on the periodic table.   You will be researching one element off of the periodic table to learn a little bit more about one element.   You will draw out of a basket for your element.  Your FINAL project will be a video about the element.  Your video should be no longer than 1 minute and 30 seconds. You must talk at least 2 times during throughout your video :) .  Talk doesn’t just mean say a word or two, but give good pieces of information and space your talking throughout your video.
