Middle School Mathematics Intervention Plan

Why: This Mathematics Intervention Plan serves as a guide for teachers to support data-driven instruction in math classes.  As part of the plan, Robbinsdale Area Schools has to identify a common resource for teachers to use as a diagnostic tool to identify categories of need for students struggling in Mathematics.

What: Khan Academy is used as a diagnostic assessment to provide more information to help teachers identify a category of need for students struggling in mathematics.  It also provides supplemental practice for students to work toward mastery.  It is intended to be used supplemental to core instruction and used to strengthen foundational mathematics skills that are necessary for success on grade level.

How: Teachers should use the Khan Academy Course Challenge assessment to determine the category of need for students demonstrating risk on the FAST aMath universal screener.  The process for identifying appropriate lessons in Khan Academy for each student is articulated in the flowchart and explained in the Instructions for Teachers.

Teacher Implementation Support: C&I staff are available to support implementation with individual or groups of teachers.

**For non-mathematics teachers or sections outside of the core mathematics in Infinite Campus to utilize Khan Academy as an intervention tool, a school must contact their technology integrationist to have custom sections built within Clever. (i.e. Targeted Services)

  1. If a student has MCA data of “Does not Meet” or aMath of “High Risk” have them take the COURSE CHALLENGE two grade levels below
  2. If a student has MCA data of “Partially Meets” or aMath of “Some Risk” have them take the COURSE CHALLENGE one grade level below
  1. If students score below 30% on this initial assessment, have them attempt the next lower grade level the next day.

Once a grade level has been decided on, students should go back to the first Unit on their list

.

The Quiz can allow students to demonstrate mastery/proficiency in the skills that preceded it.

The Unit Test allows students to demonstrate mastery/proficiency in all skills of the unit.

Within each skill, students can attempt practice problems with or without watching (and taking notes from) a video explanation. Some skills present students with multiple options for a video to watch.

As the teacher, you should Assign the mastery goal for that grade level for all your students. You can set a different grade level goal for each student (or many at once) (HELP DOCUMENT)

The teacher reports on your dashboard provide you with data showing students who could be grouped together for collaborative work. You can directly assign content to specific students (small group or individual) to work on based on the needs of students.
