BIOGRAPHY

Goran Despotovski rođen je 13. avgusta 1972. u Vršcu, Srbija.

Diplomirao je na Višoj školi likovnih i primenjenih umetnosti u Beogradu (1995); na Akademiji umetnosti u Novom Sadu završio je osnovne akademske (1999) i magistarske studije slikarstva (2003), i stekao zvanje: Doktor umetnosti – Likovne umetnosti (2018). Na istoj akademiji je i zaposlen (od 2004). Izabran je u zvanje redovnog profesora, za užu umetničku oblast Slikarstvo (od 2019). Predsednik je Saveza udruženja likovnih umetnika Vojvodine (2017–2025).

Profesor na predmetima: Slikanje, Digitalna slika, i drugim izbornim predmetima OAS, MAS, DAS, Akademije umetnosti u Novom Sadu. Koncepcija modula za studijski proigram MAS i rad na predmetu: Nove tehnologije i materijali u pripremi i realizaciji umetničkog dela.

Radio u rukovodećim timovima Akademije, kao šef Katedre za slikarstvo (2012–2018), član Nastavno-naučnog umetničkog veća (2012–2014), člаn saveta Akademije (2014–2018), i člаn Stručnоg vеćа zа humаnističkе nаukе i umеtnоst Univerziteta u Novom Sadu (2012–2018). Predsednik umetničkog saveta Galerije Akademije umetnosti (2022–2024); Koordinator MAS programa (akreditacija 2022), Direktor departmana likovnih umetnosti Akademije umetnosti u Novim Sadu i član Nastavno-naučnog umetničkog veća (2024–).

Goran Despotovski was born on 13th August 1972 in Vršac, Serbia.

He graduated from the College of Fine and Applied Arts in Belgrade (1995); at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, he completed undergraduate academic (1999) and master’s studies in painting (2003), and acquired the title of Doctor of Arts - Fine Arts (2018). Employed at the same Academy (since 2004), he was elected a Full Professor, for the artistic field of Painting (since 2019). He is the president of the Union of Fine Artists’ Associations of Vojvodina, SULUV (2017–2025).

Professor of: Painting, Digital Painting, and other elective courses within Graduate, Master and Doctoral Studies at Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, he has conceptualised the module for the MA programme and teaches the course: New Technologies and Materials in the Preparation and Realisation of a Work of Art.

He has been a member of the management teams at the Academy as the head of the Chair for Painting (2012-2018), a member of the Teaching and Scientific Arts Council (2012-2014), a member of the Academy Council (2014-2018), and a member of the Professional Council for Humanities and Arts of the University of Novi Sad (2012–2018). He is the president of the Artistic Council of the Gallery of the Academy of Arts (2022–); coordinator of the MA programme (accreditation in 2022), and the Director of the Fine Arts Department of the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad and a member of the Teaching and Scientific Arts Council (2024-present).

  Concept

Goran Despotovski se bavi istraživanjem više medijskih likovnih celina, dominantno u polju instalacija, u kojima prеdstаvlја čоvеkа, grupu, masu ljudi u formi lutke, koja u prostoru kontekstualizuje prisustvo čoveka, a da njih/njega u doslovnom smislu nema. Ovako formirani i koncipirani ljudi u grupi, kroz svoj stav, stanje, odeću, stvaraju osećaj koji se jednako može poistovetiti sa stanjem grupe u redovima, logoru, zatvoru, bolnici, čekaonici, itd.

U konceptu ovih radova, predstava čoveka je izražena specifičnim modelom lutke. Ključno je da lutke ne govore isključivo o identitetu ličnosti, već apsorbuju identitet svih nas, odnosno čoveka uopšte. Posredi je prikaz čoveka koji postaje figura; ta figura dalje postaje lutka, a ona, kroz istaknute aspekte čoveka ukazuje na odsutnost života, usred ljudskog sveta koji živi ovde i sada, ali je već deziluzioniran.

Pojavljivanje pojedinca u obliku lutke, reflektuje svakodnevicu savremenog ljudskog života i civilizacijske okvire uslovljene istorijskim događajima. Model lutke, kroz svoje suštinske elemente i način predstavljanja, aludira na čoveka koji je izgubio integritet socijalnog bića i preoblikovao se u reprodukovanu masu istovetnih neživotnih nebića. Primarni izvor za ovakvu predstavu grupe ljudi jesu različita turbulentna i represivna stanja koja su čoveku nametnuta u manipulativnim odnosima.

Na ovaj način, autor povezuje opšta mesta čovekove istrošenosti u gubitku identiteta, kada u sprezi sa drugim čovekom ili grupom ljudi bez identiteta nastaje bezlična masa. Ova predstava mase, koja može poticati iz prošlosti ili sadašnjosti, iz određenog ili neodređenog događaja, jednako ističe problem koji se može sagledati kroz period ovog vremena i regiona (progon, redovi, čekanje, glad, migracija, strah, manipulacije, itd.). Međutim, ova pojava je univerzalna i prepoznatljiva u kolektivnoj svesti, bez obzira gde se on (čovek) nalazio i u kom  vremenskom kontekstu. Stoga, sagledavanje, iščitavanje i razumevanje sadržaja ovih radova nosi jasnu poruku upozorenja ili opomene, jer istorijski gledano ovakav odnos prema čoveku je i suviše prisutan kao i to da je  čovek uvek prožet kolektivnom ili individualnom patnjom.

Goran Despotovski is engaged in exploring in several fields of fine art media, predominantly installation, where he represents man, a group, a crowd of people in the form of a dummy, which spatially contextualises man’s presence, without him/them literarily being there. People thus formed and conceptualised in a group, through their positions, states, clothes, create a feeling that can be identified as the state of a group in queues, concentration camps, prisons, hospitals, waiting rooms, etc.

In these works the representation of man is expressed with a specific model of dummy. It is essential that dummies do not speak only about a personal identity, but absorb the identities of all of us, that is, of man as such. It is a representation of man that becomes a figure; the figure further becomes a dummy, and it, in the emphasised aspects of man points to the absence of life, due to the human world living here and now and that has been disillusioned.

The appearance of an individual in a dummy form, as a body/figure, reflects the everydayness of contemporary human life and civilizational frameworks that are constituted under the influence of historic events. The model of a dummy, with its essential elements and way of representation alludes to man who has lost his integrity as a social being, and has been reshaped into a reproduced mass of identical non-living non-beings. The primary sources for such a representation of a group of people are different turbulent and repressive states, imposed on man through manipulative relationships.

This is how the author links together the common places of human weariness in the loss of identity, which, in combination with the other man or a group of people without identity, gives birth to an amorphous mass. Such a representation of masses, which can originate from the past or the present, a definite or an indefinite event, equally emphasises the problem that can be observed through this time period and this region (exile, queues, waiting, hunger, migrations, fear, manipulation, etc.). However, the phenomenon is quite recognisable to man’s collective consciousness, wherever he (man) is and regardless of the context of time. Hence, perceiving, interpreting and understanding the works carries a clear warning message, since, observed historically, such an attitude to man has been all too common together with the fact that man has always been infused with a collective or individual suffering.
