On Tuesday, Judge Adrienne Nelson of the United States District Court for District of Oregon granted the State of Oregon’s request for a preliminary injunction that would block the Kroger-Albertsons merger from proceeding.

Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum said Judge Nelson’s ruling confirms her office’s argument that the proposed merger would be harmful to consumers and workers alike.

Rosenblum said, “At a time when higher grocery and pharmacy prices are hurting countless households, today’s decision is a win for Oregonians and a win for competition in the marketplace”.

Rosenblum said she extends her sincere appreciation to the antitrust team at the Oregon Department of Justice, as well as the Federal Trade Commission and Oregon’s partners in the multistate lawsuit: Arizona, California, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

Rosenblum said, “We will continue to monitor this matter and remain vigilant in protecting consumers from anti-competitive behavior and practices”.

Senator Ron Wyden, the outgoing chair of the Senate Finance Committee said, “This is great news for grocery shoppers in Oregon who would have faced higher prices at Kroger and Albertsons if this ill-conceived consolidation had gone through”. Wyden said, “I’m glad the court has shelved this monster deal because in addition to raising grocery prices for shoppers already tiptoeing on an economic tightrope, it would have made it that much harder for Oregonians to find a pharmacy and for workers at both supermarket chains to seek fairer wages and better working conditions”.

The Kroger-Albertson’s deal was also separately blocked by a state court judge in Washington state on Tuesday.

Over 80 employees of the Roseburg Albertson’s store on Northwest Stewart Parkway are seeking a new job after company officials announced its pending closure last week.

Albertsons Portland Director of Communications Jill McGinnis told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that some employees may be able to move to the local co-owned Safeway store. McGinnis said, “Our team is working with affected employees and the labor unions, where applicable, to attempt to find them other work that is both consistent with the applicable law and/or labor agreement”.

The approximately 60,000 square foot building housing Albertsons was constructed in 2001, after the company purchased the property from a local church. Before that it was housed in the North Roseburg Plaza on Northeast Stephens Street for decades, at least as far back as 1975, according to company records. Ironically that location houses the Big Lots store, which is also closing down.

As to the property’s future, McGinnis said it is premature to speculate about what type of business may open in the current Albertsons location.

Most of Roseburg’s other major grocery stores are close by Albertsons.  WinCo Foods is next door on Northwest Stewart Parkway, with Sherm’s Thunderbird Market located just west of WinCo.  Fred Meyer, on Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard is approximately a mile way, not far from Grocery Outlet. To the east, Safeway is just over 1.5 miles away from Albertsons and is on Northeast Stephens Street.

The Ford Family Foundation has announced the promotion of Dr. Kasi Allen, who currently serves as its Director of Learning and Knowledge Management, to the inaugural role of Vice President of Learning and Impact.

A TFFF release said Allen will be responsible for leading research and evaluation, organizational learning, strategy development and measurement, and the production of high-quality rural data and knowledge – all in service of rural kids and communities.

Allen moved to Roseburg to launch the Foundation’s Learning and Knowledge Management Department in 2017, bringing more than two decades of experience as a professor, researcher and evaluator.

Foundation President and CEO Kara Carlisle said, “Kasi is a dedicated leader whose career has centered on service and building common cause”. Carlisle said, “She is committed to unleashing all of the Foundation’s tools, data and knowledge, skills and strategy to make meaningful impact for rural kids”.

The release said since joining the foundation, Allen led the teams that launched the popular Oregon by the Numbers annual data report, and the Oregon Voices survey, which captures the lived experiences of residents in every corner of the state. Allen supported community-led evaluation efforts with the foundation’s Rural Community Building team, co-authoring a hallmark study on the role of field-based staff and trust-centered philanthropy.

During her tenure, she built strategies around data visualization and storytelling, as well as an organization-wide culture of learning.

Allen said, ‘I’ve been honored to work as the first director of learning and management – supporting the Foundation in growing its learning functions, its credibility as a trusted source of knowledge and its ability to champion rural people and places”. Allen said, “We’re entering a new era – Ford Family has a real opportunity to ensure our strategies lead to results our rural kids and communities need. Working alongside our neighbors, leveraging the unique assets of this region, we know we can get there together”.

A H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate phase participant is seeking donations to provide warm shoes to children in the Family Development Center program.

A Douglas County Circuit Court release said H.O.P.E. Drug Court program is gearing up for their 108th graduation on February 3rd at 5:15 p.m. in the Douglas County Fairgrounds Community Hall building.

Graduate hopeful Chris Blackman hopes to collect shoe donations from the community to support 115 children currently participating in the Family Development Center Relief Nursery of Douglas County. The nursery serves families with children up to 5 years of age, or school age children with at least 5 risk factors.

The Family Development Center accepts referrals from many sources including community partners and self-referrals, and offers core programs aimed to strengthen families, empower parents, and give children the best start possible. Many children during this time of year still attend the program in summer shoes and need tennis shoes, boots or other types of closed toe shoes to keep warm.

Shoes of Hope is seeking donations of kid’s shoes sizes 5 to 12. New shoes can be dropped off in the lobby of Clint Newell Motors on Northeast Stephens Street, or at the Douglas County Juvenile Department Lobby on the first floor of the courthouse by the west entrance at 1036 Southeast Douglas Avenue by room 105A.

The News Review

Oregon’s commercial Dungeness crab fishery opens December 16 from Cape Falcon at Oswald State Park to the California border.

An announcement Friday from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said pre-season testing in this area shows crab meat fill meets criteria and domoic acid is below the safety threshold.

Pre-season testing in Long Beach, Washington shows crab meat fill is significantly lower than required for commercial harvest. Oregon will open the north coast in coordination with southern Washington to ensure consumers get a quality product and crab is not wasted. December 31 is the earliest this area could open.
