PURPOSE

Compare energy levels of Solar Soft X-Ray’s between SC23 Minimum and SC24 Minimum (current, i.e., April 3, 2019).

METHOD

Online interactive plots of Solar X-Ray energy levels can be found in the TIMED SEE XPS Solar Spectral Irradiance - Level 4 found here: http://lasp.colorado.edu/lisird/.  Descriptive information provided there on what that data represents is as follows:

The Soft X-ray frequencies of particular interest are those in the range of publicly available plots from the GOES 14 & 15 satellites, i.e., 0.5-8.0 Angstroms (0.05-0.80 nanometers), per the following example plot:

Since the objective is to compare the SC23 Minimum with the currently in-progress SC24 Minimum, a 15-month period around which SC23 Minimum occurred (6/01/08-9/01/09) was zoomed-in on, and compared with the most recent 15-month period of SC24 (12/31/17-4/03/19).

 

RESULTS

Plots for the following frequencies are found in Plates 1-9, attached at the end of this document:

CONCLUSIONS

Across all Soft X-ray frequencies examined, the average* energy levels during SC23 Minimum were at lower magnitudes than what has been observed so far during SC24 Minimum. (*The ‘average’ was ascertained from simply eye-balling the graphs.  Although this is not absolutely quantitative, it is readily apparent in comparing the magnitudes of energy levels presented on the y-axis, between the graphs, that our conclusion is sound.)
