Sample Letter to Local MP or Senator

Salutation:

Senator

Dear Senator

Member (House of Representatives)

Dear Sir or Dear Mr Last name of MP / Dear Madam or Dear Ms Last name of MP

Contents/Body:

My name is Your Name. I am a resident of Name of the Suburb in Name of the Electorate electorate and I am writing to you on behalf of a group of concerned citizens who are also residents of your electorate. As your constituents, we would like to request a thirty minute meeting with you on a date convenient to you within the next four weeks.

On 18 June, the Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, introduced a Private Member’s Bill,
Refugee Protection Bill 2018, that would provide for a fairer, more sustainable, and more humane approach to asylum seekers and refugees. We fully support the Bill and we want you to get behind it.

The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss policies affecting refugees and people seeking asylum, and what can be done to ensure they receive safety, fairness and freedom. In turn, the meeting will also allow local constituents who are concerned about refugees to learn where you stand on these important issues and how you plan to tackle them and represent our views within your party and in Parliament.

I look forward to hearing back from you, as well as speaking to your diary manager to discuss your availability soon.

Conclusion:

Yours faithfully,

Your Name
