A: English as First Language

The Entrance exam will consist of the following:

- Reading for comprehension - analysing a literary extract
- Extended writing - an essay on a given topic

For applicants who are First Language English speakers, it is essential that they have a degree of experience in the study of literature and analysis.

B: English as a Second Language

Grammar:

- Prepositions of location & time, prepositional phrases (eg travel by tram) & dependent prepositions (eg. look up, look over, look round)
- Tenses: Present & past simple, continuous, perfect & perfect continuous. Future forms & conditionals
- Sentence transformation exercises ranging from B1 to C1 level (PET exam to CAE) (passives, conditionals, comparative/superlative, reported speech

Reading:

There are 3 reading comprehension texts and candidates complete a different task for each text: multiple choice, true/false questions and a matching exercise.

The language level of the texts are B2 (FCE) & C1 (CAE) level.

Writing:

The short writing task is based on FCE writing task 2 and instructs candidates to write in a particular text type.

The task is graded for range and accuracy of grammar and vocabulary, organisation and use of linking devices, style of writing and relevance to the question and adherence to text type conventions.

Mathematics

60 minute test - calculator required, formulas will be given

NUMBER

Find the highest common factor and lowest common multiple of a set of numbers

Round numbers to the required number of decimal places or significant figures

Use index notation and index laws for multiplication and division of positive and negative integer powers

Perform calculations with numbers in standard form

Perform calculations involving ratios and direct proportion

Solve problems with percentages, including percentage increase and decrease, cost and sale price, reverse percentages, compound interest

Perform distance-speed-time calculations

GEOMETRY

Use and convert between units of length, area, volume, mass and capacity

Calculate the area of a triangle, square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus and trapezium

Know the terms; radius, diameter, circumference, pi

Calculate area and circumference of a circle

Find the height from the area

Find the area and perimeter of compound shapes

Know the angle rules for line, point, opposite and parallel lines and use them to find missing angles

Use pythagoras’ theorem to find missing lengths in right angled triangles

Calculate the volume and surface area of prisms, pyramids and spheres

Find the surface area composite solids

Find the volume of composite solids

Find missing sides and angles in right-angled triangles using trigonometry

ALGEBRA

Recognise simple sequences, find further terms and find the rule

Simplify algebraic expressions

Substitute into formulae

Multiply out a single and double bracket

Solve linear equations

Change the subject of a formula, including ones with fractions, squares and roots

Solve a pair of equations by elimination or substitution (simultaneous equations)

Factorise simple algebraic expressions by taking out a common factor

Find the formula for relationships which are in simple direct proportion and use it to solve problems

Find and use the formula for relationships which are in simple inverse proportion

Solve a quadratic equation either by factorisation or by use of the quadratic formula

GRAPHS

Write down the gradient of a line segment

Find the equations of vertical or horizontal lines

Draw a graph within a given range, given a linear equation

Find the equation of a line given the graph

State the gradient and y intercept of a line from the equation

Find the average of a set of numbers
