Call for volunteers!
The Friends of the Library is looking for a few good folks to join our volunteer team. Both our Southside branch, and Main branch are in need of extra hands.
Below are job descriptions for the tasks we need help with. If you have any interest in these roles, please reach out to us!
As a cashier you would be responsible for staffing the bookstore during our open hours. This job involves greeting and helping customers as needed. Taking cash and making change for purchases as needed. Running credit card transactions through a square reader as needed (we provide training!). And restocking the store from the back inventory as needed during your shift. Cashiers usually work 1 shift a week, for 3 hours, 10p-1p, or 1-4p, Monday through Saturday.
Sorting is a critical part of our system! Our sorters keep the book room and book store stocked and organized. As a sorter you would: go through all book donations, scan each book for our online bookseller with a simple computer program, separate and shelve books for the bookstore and special sales, determine and discard the books that are not suitable for sale, and keep the book room tidy and organized. This job involves attention to detail, some research if a book is hard to define, organizational skill with categories/subjects, and some simple computer work. We provide training for every part of the process and are looking for some detail oriented book lovers to take this on! Sorters generally work one 3 hr shift a week during our open hours, 9a-6p Monday-Saturday.
After our scanning process, we are left with some books we won't keep in stock, but that will get sent to our online seller. This job is to pack 8-10 boxes a week of those books. It is a simple and repetitive task, perfect for listening to an audio book while you pack! This task is generally a few hours a week. You can pick a day and time, come in, and pack for us!
Every month the store inventory is “turned over.” The books and media that have been in the store for 31-60 days are taken out, and replaced with fresh books from our book room. The books that are removed need to be scanned for our online seller. Once scanned, you would separate what will be sent, and pack up the rest for a thrift store that pays us by the pound. This is a once a month job, within the first couple days of the start of each month. This job requires some simple computer work.
