                2019 VHYC JSP Registration

Dear VHYC Members,

With a new Sailing Director, many returning staff and exciting plans for racers and recreational sailors alike, we are eagerly looking forward to another rewarding summer of junior sailing at the VHYC.  While June seems a long ways away, now is the time to register your kids in the program.

Continuing a policy begun last year to help us gauge class demand and allocate staff accordingly, there will be two enrollment periods.  The first enrollment period begins today and concludes on April 15Th.  During the first enrollment period you must register your child in their “first choice” class, which can be for Session I, Session II, or both sessions.

On May 1st a second open enrollment period will begin for parents to enroll their child in an additional class if desired.  This period will remain open until the start of the Junior Sailing Program in June. All first-choice class selections will be prioritized over secondary class selections.

What this means is that if, for example, your child wants to sail both 420 Elementary and Reachers this summer, you need to declare which is their first-choice class.  If it is Reachers, then you need to enroll them in Reachers during the first enrollment period by April 15th.  Once the first enrollment period is complete, the JSP committee will determine which classes still have space and will open the second enrollment period on May 1st.  You then can enroll your child in 420 Elementary during the second enrollment period.  If there is no space left in the class, she will be placed on a wait list.

Other important policies you should be aware of:

  • All classes will be capped.  Class caps are based on coach-to-child ratios and available equipment.   Ratios vary by class levels and types of boats.  This is for the safety of our children and the quality of the classes.   All registrations are recorded with a time and date stamp.   If caps are reached, the last registrations above the cap will be added to a waitlist.
  • There will be a late fee of $200 added to the cost of the program for anyone who registers for their first-choice class after the April 15th deadline.
  • With the exception of Tadpoles, registrations are for full sessions and will not be prorated for less than full attendance.
  • If your child would like to double-up and take two classes in the same session for a full day on the water (example:  Reachers in the morning in addition to 420 Advanced in the afternoon) the second class is offered at a 50% discount based on availability within the class caps and on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Registrations for members with past due Club account balances will not be accepted until those balances have been paid.

We’re looking forward to an exciting summer under our new Sailing Director Catherine Shanahan, who comes to us with a wealth of experience as a coach and teacher.  Click here for more on Catherine.  She’ll be joined by a host of returning staff and some new faces, all committed to enhancing the skills of our sailors in a safe and fun summer experience.  One change we’re making is to shift Race Day for juniors from Friday to Saturday and adding both recreational and adult racing.  We envision a day of fun racing for parents and kids in Optis, 420s, O’pen Bics, Laser and Sonars.  Stay tuned for more details!

Thanks again for registering your children into their first-choice class promptly before the April 15th deadline.   This enables us to gauge class sizes and potentially gather additional resources to accommodate classes that exceed caps.
