About Us:

The Celtic Music Interpretive Centre (CMIC) is a renowned not-for-profit society located in the picturesque village of Judique on Cape Breton Island. Our mission is to celebrate and foster the Celtic Music and Heritage of Cape Breton Island as a living tradition through archival preservation, education, and performance. As the official Celtic Music Centre of Nova Scotia and the official cultural archives for the County of Inverness, CMIC offers a unique and immersive experience of the history, culture, and music of Cape Breton Island.

Position Overview:

The role involves supporting the Archivist and Heritage teams in various tasks related to cataloging, digitization, preservation, and assisting patrons in accessing the archives. The archival assistant role within a cultural center requires a blend of archival expertise and a dedication to facilitating access to culture by using organizational practices to preserve the authenticity of the collections.

Responsibilities:

Collection Management:

Assist in organizing and cataloging incoming archival materials, including documents, photographs, recordings, and artifacts related to music and cultural heritage.

Maintain accurate records of acquisitions, donations, and loans to the archives.

Preservation and Conservation:

Support preservation efforts by implementing proper storage, handling, and conservation techniques for delicate materials.

Collaborate with the archivist to assess the condition of items and become aware of conservation strategies.

Digitization and Documentation:

Aid in digitizing archival materials and ensuring high-quality digital preservation of music-related documents, recordings, and photographs.

Help maintain comprehensive and accurate databases or digital catalogs of the archives.

Reference and Access Services:

Assist researchers, scholars, students, and community members in accessing archival materials, providing guidance on navigating the collections.

Respond to inquiries, retrieve materials, and assist in research projects related to music and cultural heritage.

Exhibitions and Outreach:

Collaborate with the exhibition team in selecting display materials, providing historical context, and contributing to exhibit design and installation.

Support outreach activities, including workshops, presentations, and community events to promote awareness and engagement with the archives.

Administrative Support:

Assist in administrative tasks such as maintaining inventory records, preparing reports, and managing schedules for access to archival materials.

Collaborate with the archival teams on grant applications, fundraising efforts, and promotional activities.

Qualifications:

Working Hours:

Regular working hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends required to accommodate operational needs.
