From fibres to fabrics machines – spinning, tufting, embroidery, weaving, knitting, carding, felting

 

Carding – separating fibres for processing, by hand with large brushes or using semi/fully automated rolling machines

 

Spinning – twisting fibres into yarns, by hand by rotating a spindle or using pedal operated spinning wheel or fully automated spinning machines

 

Braiding – ball Winding Machine / rope maker, components with yarn attached move around an 8-shaped track to cross the yarns over each other

 

Weaving – by hand separating threads with a needle, semi-automated needs two shafts that connect to every 2nd thread to move them up and down, fully automated Jacquard loom invented in 18th century and controlled by punch cards to allow automatic production of complex patterns – fabloom Walter Gonzalez – low cost jacquard loom, lea albaugh, april grow et al comes with software to easily design the pattern for the weave – 3d weaving robot arm (basket weave), zoe romano

 

Knitting – by hand with needles, semi automated industrial stocking frame / domestic machine, full automated industrial knit machines – becky stern knitting machine hack from punch card to software with arduino – circular knitic, varvara and mar –

 

Felting – by hand with needles / wet felting, semi automated with sewing machine type machine, fully automated with a loom – FILT machine, small loom

 

Tufting – by hand with needle, semi automated with gun, fully automated with robot loom -
