Minutes for the General Meeting Held on: August 12, 2019

Meeting called to order by Louis Gabriel, President, at 6:30 PM, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Community Resource Officer Report:
Officer William Old was not present. His report was read by Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, Karen Mayne.
Guest Speaker – Greg Bockheim, Executive Director, Virginia Zoological Park
Mr. Bockheim provided an interesting talk on the zoo’s programs related to education, community outreach, and conservation and breeding of at-risk species from around the world. The Virginia Zoo hosts about 500,000 visitors a year and is the only zoo in Virginia that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Mr. Bockheim ended his talk with a “pop quiz” and gave stuffed animals to the winners!
Treasurer: Treasurer not present. President Louie Gabriel reported a balance of $2,323.89 as of the board meeting on July 29, 2019.
Wards Corner Task Force: Karen Mayne attended the task force meeting on August 8, 2019. She reported that two restaurants will be opening in the Mid-Town Shopping Center. Chipotle is under construction. Clean Eatz is in the process of obtaining permits. The City Council approved the Wards Corner revitalization plan in July. Vice Mayor Martin Thomas reported the Canadian real estate firm that owns the former Farm Fresh property is considering either selling the property or redeveloping it. The City of Norfolk is in discussions with Kotarides Development to extend the lease on the Work Force Development Center for another five years. During that time, the City will look for a location that would provide expanded space for both the work force center and the City’s human resources programs. Kotarides has long-term plans to develop the property with a combination of retail and residential.
