Hebrews 11: Faith That Moves Us Forward

Abraham and God’s Promises

Many of us can look back on our lives and see God’s promises fulfilled. But, we may also have promises from God yet to be fulfilled. This is where we need to be careful, though, because sometimes we can write our own script into God's promises. As we continue our series in Hebrews 11, we again look at the life and faith of Abraham and his wife, Sarah.

Read Hebrews 11:11-12 and Genesis 21:1-3. God promised Sarah that she would bear children. This promise was not fulfilled in the way she thought it would be. But here is the key phrase in this passage: She considered Him faithful who had made the promise.

• How do you react when you feel God’s promises aren’t being fulfilled how you hoped or thought they would be?
• Many times God’s promises are fulfilled in much better ways than we could have thought up on our own. Can you explain a time this was true for you?
• Why was Sarah able to trust in God, even though it took years for his promise to be fulfilled?

Read Hebrews 11:17-19. In this instance, Abraham, by faith, has confidence in God’s power. Not only did Abraham trust in God’s character, but also in His capacity to fulfill His promises. In other words, Abraham believed that nothing was impossible for God.

• What happens when we keep God in a box and believe He can only do things that seem possible to us?
• Talk about a time when God did the impossible in your life.

Prayer Focus: Engage the promises of God.

• List His promises - try to keep them as scriptural as possible
• Meditate on them - absorb the truth of His promises
• Pray
• Act - promises require a step of faith on our part
