SkyView Academy is committed to preparing students to be lifelong learners and honorable leaders of tomorrow.

February 18, 2021

Dear Families,

First, I would like to express my deep appreciation and gratitude for your words of kindness and support regarding my recent appointment to the role of Head of Schools. I recognize the magnitude of the responsibility and intend to serve in the role to the best of my ability. I recognize that the announcement creates a variety of questions, thoughts, and concerns. My commitment to transparency and communication remains steadfast. With that in mind, the plan forward is outlined below for your review.

I chose to serve SkyView Academy 9 years ago because I believe in its vision and mission to my core. Indulge me for a moment as I remind us all of these fundamental truths for our community. First, our Vision remains constant. SkyView Academy is committed to preparing students to be life-long learners and honorable leaders of tomorrow. We accomplish our Vision through our Mission. SkyView Academy offers a research-based, content-rich liberal arts program with a commitment to foreign language studies and community service. Staff, parents, and students are actively involved in a culture of expectation and support where individuals are respected, valued, and known by the content of their character.

I believe to my core we are educating the future to change the world. More specifically, we exist to meet students where they are and develop them holistically.  Every decision we make will prioritize the academic, emotional, social, physical, and mental development of the students in our charge. Our culture of expectation and support will ensure our community as a whole, from faculty and staff to students and parents, is respected, valued, and known by the content of their character because our purpose is united in the education of our students to change the world.

As a result, it is my expectation as the Head of Schools that our decision-making process as a staff and faculty will prioritize first the holistic safety of our students and then the education of our students. Every member of our staff and faculty will filter each decision we make through the following two questions:

  1. How does my decision impact the holistic safety of my students?
  2. How does my decision impact the education of my students?

Over the course of the past 10 years, the Head of Schools position faced a variety of challenges. This created uncertainty, question, concern, and doubt. The challenges raised concern for our staff, faculty, and community. The leadership challenges resulted in an impact on our staff, our students, our organization, and our community. These challenges increased concern, created speculation, and elevated worry.

As the Head of Schools, I recognize the challenges and embrace the opportunity to address them directly. I also recognize the responsibility I have to maintain the fiscal integrity of our school as well as the necessary support for our staff. To that end, I reflected on the past 10 years and identified the challenges and their impact on our students, staff, and community.

What humbles me the most as I reflect on the challenges is the resilience I see within our staff. I am in awe of their determination to provide holistic safety and solid education to our students despite the challenges. Through the ups and downs created by the leadership challenges, our staff and faculty continued to provide an environment that resulted in educational accolades and accomplishments.

I find us on the precipice of phenomenal opportunities. We have great leaders among our staff and faculty. I believe that our financial resources need to be utilized to support our staff and faculty with “boots on the ground” for our students. To that end, our administrative leadership team will not increase. It will remain as it has. I will continue to serve in the active role I have. As a team, we will continue to provide servant leadership to our students, staff, and faculty. Rather than increasing another administrative position, I will distribute those resources among our staff in leadership roles.

The leadership roles will include Dean of Student job shares for the elementary, middle, and high schools. Current faculty and staff have been invited to apply for these positions.

  • At the ES level, the deans selected will share a classroom and the Dean of Students role. You may wonder how this will impact student learning.
  • The time will be split in such a way that the deans will serve as deans either in the morning or the afternoon.
  • Their classroom time will, therefore, be consistent. If they teach in the morning, they will serve as dean in the afternoon. If they teach in the afternoon, they will serve as dean in the morning.
  • It will be much like the transitions the students experience when they transition for reading and math groups.
  • At the middle and high school levels, the deans will divide teaching time and administrative responsibilities as deans.
  • The deans at the middle and high school levels will be assigned students by last names. This will provide the opportunity for increased support to the students and further my desire to develop a culture that each child is known.
  • The deans at each school level will work together to support the students holistically.

Another internal leadership role will include Teacher Mentors. These mentors will serve to support teachers who are new to the school, new to teaching, or working on their CDE Induction program. In addition to Teacher Mentors, we will reintroduce team leads that will provide leadership in the process of vertical alignment between grade levels and schools. A final leadership role will revolve around curriculum and instruction best practices and staff professional development.

These leadership roles support students in a practical way and allow staff and faculty the support they deserve. Additionally, the roles provide staff the opportunity to grow professionally as leaders within our school. This, in turn, puts actions to our vision and mission in a practical way.

We are currently receiving applications from the staff for these roles. The deadline for applications is tomorrow, Friday, February 19th. Interviews will be conducted throughout the next two weeks. Final decisions for each role will be made and announced prior to Spring Break. Training for these roles will begin upon our return from Spring Break.

I remain committed to our community and will serve to the best of my ability. I recognize that I will not always make decisions that please everyone. However, I will filter every decision through the two key questions. Our students remain our most precious community members. We are privileged to serve them.

I look forward to the opportunity to serve our community in the role of Head of Schools.

Humbly,

Janet Worley

March 1st - March 14th Scholastic Online Book Fairs

Dear Families,

As we reach the halfway point of this school year, we want to take a moment to share information about our upcoming state assessments.  Our students are scheduled to take state tests beginning on March 29-April 30, 2021. Students will need to take the state-mandated assessments in person at SkyView Academy. The following grade level and subject tests are currently scheduled to take place:

  • 3rd-8th Grades - CMAS for English Language Arts and Math
  • 4th & 7th Grades - CMAS Social Studies (Random selection by CDE)
  • 5th, 8th, and 11th Grades - CMAS Science
  • 9th Grade - PSAT 9
  • 10th Grade - PSAT 10
  • 11th Grade - SAT

While there is still uncertainty and ambiguity surrounding how the COVID-19 pandemic will impact this year’s instructional settings, a typical state assessment administration season is currently scheduled to resume in Spring 2021 as required by state and federal law.  This information is based on current expectations; however, with most aspects of education, state assessments may need to be adjusted in response to COVID-19 conditions.  We will continue to monitor state and federal assessment requirements and expectations as the school year continues across Colorado and as COVID-19 responses evolve this year.

For more information about state testing, please visit the State Mandated Testing page on our school’s website (State Mandated Testing).  SkyView’s testing schedule is posted on this page as well (Calendar). We hope you will choose not to excuse your student from state-mandated testing.  However, if you choose to do so, please follow the instructions provided on the State Mandated Testing page and complete the excusal process as soon as possible.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership!

Sincerely,

SVA Leadership Team
