Thank you for your interest in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated Beacon of Light Scholarship. This award is the philanthropic arm of Gamma Tau Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Long Beach, California.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University, in Indiana, by seven school teachers. International graduate and undergraduate chapters implement various programs during the sorority year to ensure chapters fulfill our motto: "Greater Service, Greater Progress". Gamma Tau Sigma is one of the graduate chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, We provide scholastic opportunities and community service throughout Long Beach and surrounding areas.
We will award $500 scholarships to four graduating African American high school students. Scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors in the Long Beach or surrounding areas, who attend a private school, or a public or tuition-free charter school, and who will enroll full time in a community college, four- year college/university, or trade school in the fall of 2018. The award certificates will be presented on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at a place to be determined. The actual funds will not be given to the awardees, until proof of enrollment is established.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated is an organization that was founded on the mission of service. Our scholarship honors this mission, and each scholarship applicant is required to compose an essay of a minimum of three (3) pages, addressing the topic below.
Topic: As a young person coming of age during a socially and politically divisive time, how do you envision your involvement to positively affect change?
Please apply rules of good composition and writing skills to the essay response.
Each scholarship application will be judged on a variety of criteria including grade point average( must have a 2.5 GPA or better), and essay strengths(thought, preparation, research, documentation, viewpoints as supported by personal experience and/or research of your choice, as well as specific examples of individuals or situations).
Checklist for submission of scholarship application:
[ ] Submission of an application (Access to Application)
[ ] Typed essay, using Times New Roman, 12 font size, with 1 inch margins, on 8 1/2" by 11" paper; essay length is to be a minimum of 3 pages and a maximum of 5 pages.
[ ] Enclose a current, official high school transcript from your school, with a seal or stamp from your school's registrar. The transcript must be in a sealed envelope. You may not submit a transcript without the registrar’s official seal or stamp.
[ ] Enclose two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers, spiritual leader, mentor, and coach or club supervisor. Each letter must be in a separate, sealed envelope.
[ ] If a community service log or evidence of community service is available, please submit.
[ ] Remember to sign the bottom of your application.
[ ] If you are selected, a senior photo and copy of your college acceptance letter must be submitted electronically by email.
All required documents must be postmarked by Saturday, April 21, 2018
