Today is day 5

COA Awareness Week is February 12th-18th, 2023. Did you know that approximately 1 in 4 children lives in a family with a parent addicted to drugs and/or alcohol? Those children & adolescents living with addiction need to know that it is not their fault when a parent struggles with an addiction; and that addiction is considered a family disease as it has an impact on every member of the family (Nacoa, 2022). So, how do we raise awareness and show support? Check out my Addiction & the Family bulletin board for more resources and information! The link is below.

DCC Instant Decision Day

ATTENTION SENIORS

Dutchess Community College will be visiting on TODAY, February 16th from 8:30 - 11:00 am in the computer lab for Instant Decision Day.  Stop by to work through your application with an admissions representative and be given an instant decision on your acceptance.  Pre-registration for the event is available through SCOIR. 

The Student Government meeting is Tuesday, 2/21.  All groups taking part in the Winter Carnival MUST have a representative at that meeting!

John Jay Debate Club would like to invite you to our annual Model Congress on March 2 from 4pm-8pm! It is a great chance to debate topics you enjoy with Friends. The Bard Early College Program

In the 2023-24 school year, we are excited to be able to offer an exciting learning experience to our students going into 11th and 12th grade, The Bard Early College Program. This program is housed at Dutchess BOCES in conjunction with Bard College located in Annandale-on-Hudson. For more information, visit https://hudson.bard.edu/ or see the flier below.

There is limited space and a selection process.

ATTENTION SENIORS

The Community Foundations Scholarship Program application portal is currently open. Students can register and apply for several local scholarships by submitting one application.  Follow the link HERE for more details.

In addition, scholarship information is consistently being updated in our master database on the School Counseling webpage, which can be found HERE.  

Scholarship Workshops

The Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley is offering Virtual Scholarship Support Workshops!! The workshops are offered in the evening through March 2023 and are FREE and open to anyone who is interested. Attendees will be walked through the online Universal Application; given tips for writing essays, creating and formatting resumes, attaching documents, and requesting transcripts and letters of recommendation. Each session will be interactive with questions and answers. Registration is required and the zoom link for each session will be emailed to the registrants on the morning of the session. Attention Seniors!!

You MUST  fill out a transcript request form for every college you are applying to in order for your counselor to send your transcript and letters of recommendation to the colleges of your choice.  This form should be filled out AT LEAST TWO WEEKS in advance.  Transcript request forms can be found in the google classroom.  In addition, there are QR codes posted in both guidance suites that will take you to this form. 

YEARBOOK: The 2023 John Jay Patriot Yearbook is now on sale. In order to ensure that we can add as much content and make it more valuable, yearbooks will not be delivered in the Spring but will be shipped individually in August to your home. When ordering a yearbook, please make sure your home address is correct. A special offer is being made, if you order personalization by 11/25/2022, you will get up to four free icons. COLLEGE BOUND SENIORS

Please request your teacher letter of recommendations through SCOIR only.  When you fill out your COMMON APPLICATION there will be a section that asks you to request recommendations.  Simply put your teacher's name in the required field to move forward to the next screen on your application.  DO NOT PUT YOUR TEACHER OR COUNSELOR EMAIL ADDRESS IN THIS SECTION.  

If you have already requested a letter of recommendation through the common application, you must log into your account and use the "Manage Recommenders" option to remove the current invitation.  Then, log into SCOIR to request your letter.   It is imperative that you follow these directions or your common application will not process correctly.  

ATTENTION PARENTS: If you are interested in purchasing photos from any of our sports, clubs, or activities, please go to legacystudios.com and enter code : 3508E23 to view proofs and place your order.

CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

Girl Up will be having a meeting afterschool TODAY, February 16th in room 220. Please join us as we discuss our upcoming plans for Women's History Month and further planning for the Winter Carnival

Praying Patriots

Meetings are every Monday in Room 243 after school. Join us for games, messages and so much more!

Our Soup-er bowl Soup Can collection has officially begun! Drop off your soup cans in the main lobby! All cans will be donated to the food pantry at Vineyard Community Church. The collection will be running all throughout the month of February.

Ski and Snowboard Club

Our next trip is THIS Saturday, February 18th to Gore Mountain! This is our longest bus ride of the season which means an early morning start. Please be at John Jay by 5am on Saturday morning. It is cold and dark at that time, so feel free to stay in your warm cars until the buses pull up.  We will be departing promptly at 5:30am. Please check Google Classroom for updated details about the trip including the schedule for the day, bus lists and a packing list.

SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Club: SADD Club will be meeting every other Monday. Next meeting is  going to be held on Tuesday, February 21th, (do to the holiday on Monday) at 2:30pm in Room 101! GC Code: msjxhng Instagram: johnnjaysadd

FFA: If you are interested in animals, plants, farming, mechanics, anything agriculture related or gaining leadership skills, then join the John Jay FFA (Future Farmers of America). Meetings are held every Monday after school in room 197. Come join us!! Our Classroom code is: jjnvx6m.

John Jay Chess Club

Are you a keen chess player who would like to join a club? John Jay Chess Club will be on Tuesdays. The meetings will be in room 247 at 2:30pm.

Congrats to the boys swim team on an excellent season this year.  The boys swam hard in sections last night (2/14) and all reduced their times.  Congrats to Justin Perillo (JJ) and Miles Clyde (RCK) on a great senior season.  

Congratulations to the Varsity Boys Bowling team who won the Section 1 Title yesterday defeating the defending state champions North Rockland and are now heading to states! Darren Hernandez tied for the top bowler of the tournament and John Hansen tied for high game with a 284. Additionally Isabella Schramm’ will be headed to states qualifying to bowl on the Section 1 Girls team. Good luck at States Patriots!

Wappingers Varsity Gymnastics - Emma Dwyer will be competing on BALANCE BEAM at the NYSPHAA STATE TOURNAMENT for the Section One 2023 Team.

CONGRATS EMMA!  WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!!

Wrestling

Congratulations to our 10 Section qualifiers this weekend and especially to All-Section place finishers junior Kevin Murphy (3rd), freshman Ryan Fitzpatrick (4th), senior Evan Prine (5th), and freshman Michael Mauro (6th) who helped lead the Patriots to an 8th-place finish out of 33 Section one teams.

Kayla Cuthbertson, Basketball - great defensive effort in a win vs Arlington!

Emma Dwyer, Gymnastics - qualified for the NYS Gymnastics Championships on the BEAM.

Alicia Harry (JJ)  and Taylor Mensching (RCK), Unified Bowling - Both girls bowled a wonderful game against New Paltz and Arlington !

Kevin Murphy, Wrestling - led the team in its 8th place finish out of 33 schools at sectionals.  Kevin was All-League placing 3rd in his weight class.

Congratulations to the John Jay cheer Teams. 

JV, Varsity and the Game day team all took home 1st place trophies from the Putnam Valley Cheer Invitational this past Saturday!!!
