(players laughing)
Brennan: Hello one and all! Welcome back to another episode of "Adventuring Party!" I'm your humble GM, Brennan Lee Mulligan. With me as always are our Prefrontal PIs. Say hi, Prefrontal PIs.
All: Hi, Prefrontal PIs!
Brennan: Whoa.
(players laughing)
Freddie: This was a thick episode.
Siobhan: This was.
Hank: Again!
Freddie: A thick episode.
Hank: With all the party
Freddie: Thicc with two Cs.
Hank: Splitting, so much happens.
Freddie: Maybe three even.
Danielle: Ooh.
Brennan: Yes, yes.
Freddie: Three Cs Yeah.
Brennan: I have a, so you, we, like, I never know what y'all are gonna do, and that's the fun. That's the fun for me. It seems like this group really quickly got into party splitting mode-
Freddie: Yeah.
Brennan: But kinda had some fun, we've had some fun different tangents of who's split in what parties. What is the vibe like when you're, when like, when you party split, in your head, is it like, are you like sort of thinking about what you're going to do when it's like, okay, when it cuts over to us, and I'm gonna think about what I'm gonna do, or are you more like, oh, I'm like wondering what's gonna happen to the other, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Danielle: Yeah, I raw dog it.
Brennan: Raw dog it.
Hank: Oh, wow.
Freddie: I do my best to pay attention, and also forget what I'm listening to, because I shouldn't know what I'm listening to.
(players agreeing)
Hank: You have to know what you don't know, so you have to listen a little bit.
Siobhan: Yes.
Brennan: You must know what you don't know, exactly.
Hank: But yeah, I definitely am sitting there being like, what am I gonna do when I get to Madam Palpatine's.
(players laughing)
Brennan: Madam Palpatine is exactly right. Speaking of, you discovered the villain! Madam Loathing!
(players "yeah"ing)
Brennan and Siobhan: Self Loathing.
Siobhan: My old nemesis.
Brennan: My old nemesis.
(players laughing)
Hank: My old, and future, and current, and-
(players laughing)
Alex: I don't have one.
(players laughing)
Freddie: No yeah.
(Alex laughing)
Brennan: Yes, so we had very frightening encounter at Madam Loathing's. How do, when did it start to come together, How do, when did it start to come together, and when that connection, like what, what was the final domino for people in terms of like, oh my god, I realized that, like?
Hank: Oh, when you were like, she is him.
Siobhan: Yeah.
(players laughing)
Hank: No, I was so mad, like, 'cause I, like, as soon as it clicked, it was like, oh, there were all of the clues Brennan gave me. (players laughing) I just ignored all of them. But yeah, yeah, it was, so the shadow is when it happened, when Ronnie Reptile was like, there is a shadow downstairs, I was like-
Brennan: Yeah. That was such a great fact too.
Freddie: Oh, great, you said fact that tied right into it.
Brennan: You tied right into it, it was great that they have a thing that detects shadow.
Hank: Yeah, that one was just off the dome.
Brennan: Off the dome.
Hank: It's not in my fact book that I prepared 'cause I'm terrified of doing improv with all of you.
(players laughing)
Freddie: Yeah, yeah, that's a, hey, I mean, allow me to commiserate as a non-improv person as well.
Hank: Yeah, uh-huh?
Freddie: It is very much-
Hank: Yeah.
Freddie: (whispering) Very scary.
Hank: Yeah, just let Trapp (players laughing) make jokes.
Freddie: You ever, you see what they're doing?
Hank: Yeah. (laughing)
Freddie: You know that they're not, they're thinking of that-
Siobhan: We're all scared of Trapp's brain. (players laughing)
Danielle: Yeah, for reals though.
Trapp: Although do, I truly, I didn't, I did not think Madam Loathing, I truly, I thought she was just gonna be a shit, like.
Brennan: Yes.
Trapp: You know? And, but I was thinking, I was like, well, like, I see Detective Hunch as someone who is like, gets a shiny new toy, and immediately wants to play with it. And like-
Brennan: Yeah.
Trapp: The last thing he heard was like, it's in their eyes, and it's like, he's a snoopy guy, the next person he sees, he's gonna wanna be like, is there anything in your eyes, what's in the eyes?
Hank: Yeah.
Brennan: Yes.
Trapp: And so, it wasn't with any kind of like, it's like, oh, I bet Madam Loathing is actually the big bad. It was truly just like, I can look in eyes now.
Brennan: Yeah. (players laughing) And see what the deal is, yeah. And we, you know, we sort of had that thing with Donny Urges in the first episode of like, little shimmers or sheens to the eyes, and kind of foreshadowing. But the-
Freddie: Oh.
Brennan: Ooh. (player laughing)
Freddie: Yeah.
Brennan: Hmm, ah.
Freddie: Oh, sure.
Brennan: Ooh, sure.
Siobhan: Oh, yes, we all remember that, and took note of it.
Hank: I remember that.
Brennan: Yeah. (laughs)
Hank: That was yesterday.
Siobhan: It was definitely written down.
Brennan: Yeah, but I think the interesting thing there. Yes, so you saw the photo, Self Loathing, Self Doubt, the sort of family relationship, and...
Hank: Yeah, and what, yeah, to check with that, I thought when you said shadow that like, he was downstairs, I didn't think he was Madam Loathing.
Brennan: Yes.
Freddie: Oh, yeah.
Hank: And so, I'm just so caught up in my own, because I like, 'cause I, I had thought, this is an external thing-
Brennan: Yes.
Hank: That is in now, and it's running amok.
Brennan: Yeah.
Hank: Not it's taken over an existing system.
Alex: Yeah.
Brennan: Well, an interesting thing I will say too, and I could be wrong, it's always possible that I slipped up somewhere along the way, but also, the shadowy figure, I believe I mostly described neutral in terms of their gender, right?
(players saying "yeah")
Brennan: But just are, but you know-
Siobhan: We just assumed tropes.
Brennan: Tropes, tropes!
Siobhan: Tropes!
Brennan: Yeah, a big looming-
Siobhan: A big guy.
Brennan: A big guy.
Siobhan: You very rarely get a goon or a goombah that is a female goon or goombah, or non-binary.
Brennan: Not a lotta, not a lotta lady palookas running around out here.
Siobhan: No.
(players laughing)
Brennan: Yeah, yeah.
Alex: A goombthem.
(players laughing)
Hank: A goombthem.
Brennan: A goomb- If we don't make a pin of the month for Dropout that is goombthem,
Hank: Yeah, yeah.
Brennan: G-O-O-M-B-them.
(players laughing)
Hank: Palook-'-E-M.
Brennan: Yeah. (players laughing) Yeah, Palookx, yeah, absolutely, yeah.
(players laughing)
Siobhan: Goombthem Palook'em.
Brennan: Yeah, exactly, exactly. So, the, but yes, Madam Loathing is revealed, and there are, I'm trying to think of like the earliest, well, so, it's an interesting thing in terms of like red herrings in mysteries, and stuff like that. Overdoing a bunch of these, and I know that Siobhan will know this as well of like, many seasons of the show, secret villains come up in a lotta different genres, in a lotta different types. And so, you gotta be careful to not kind of, as a DM, give yourself a villain edit of who your villain always ends up being. So like, you know, I've had seasons where the villain has been a really close beloved friend that betrays everybody. But for that to work, sometimes the villain has to be the nasty fucking piece of work who's mean-spirited right from the jump. And in a weird way, I think those are the ones that fly under the radar even more.
Trapp: Yeah, 'cause you expect a lotta powerless shits.
Hank: Yes.
Trapp: But then it's like, well, that powerless shit turned out to be a powerful shit.
Brennan: Yeah, exactly.
Siobhan: Well, I think that also in this, which is a fun disguise for this villain, is that we're playing in a world of every character has a very clear game.
Brennan: Yes.
Danielle: Mm.
Siobhan: Because you're playing the game of the one thing that you run in the brain, and so it's like, well, it's loathing, well, then I just say, like, all I'm doing is saying things (snapping fingers) about how much I hate myself, and hate everything around me.
Brennan: Mm-hm.
Siobhan: She's too funny to be the bad guy is what I'm saying.
Brennan: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Freddie: Yeah.
Brennan: And I was thinking too, there's an element, there's an element with Madam Loathing where I was like, I was, you know, we, and I said, we were talk about the efficiency of machines, and that the mento ray that the psychometer that has been turned into this basically mind control ray, right? That it's like, oh, it's so much harder to brute force something than to just find the part of the brain that already kind of wants to do whatever the mind control ray is gonna tell you to do. And so, to me, there's something in Elias of like, what's the person within Elias's mind that gets the key, that gets that mind control key. And it's like, where is the weak point? What's the first domino to fall? And for Elias, just for his makeup, the first thing that starts to bend towards mind control is self-loathing. Is this idea, you know what I'm saying? Like that that would be the first to go, and then following that is like, what, who does self-loathing go for first? Well, there's ambition, and then she gets justification, and it's like this sort of cascade of like, what are the parts of you that want to start listening to this mind control ray, right?
Siobhan: Mm.
Trapp: I do love the idea of Madam Loathing being like, I have this key, I can control, I can finally like grasp power however I want. And the first step is bringing all these children with me. (players laughing) And like, all right, come on, everyone, we have to go down to Cerebell Station. And okay, everyone, like, come, all the little shits that I hate-
Brennan: She needed a cover! (players laughing) She had to get a cover to get access-
Alex: Oh, a cover, I thought she was, like, I was so clueless, I thought she was becoming nice.
(players laughing)
Trapp: A field trip, wonderful!
Alex: Yeah!
Brennan: I love, well, it's very, I will say, I think that like, this season, I mean, we're not unclear that this season has been one of the most bonkers seasons in the history of the show.
Siobhan: Yeah.
Brennan: But that, I think that can make-
Freddie: Oh.
Brennan: Yeah, (laughs) ooh very nice, very good.
Hank: yeah, yeah, yeah.
Siobhan: For sure, for sure.
Brennan: It's just so incredibly bonkers, which makes mystery solving very challenging. 'Cause for mystery-
Freddie and Hank: Yeah.
Hank: So many characters.
Siobhan: Right.
Brennan: So many characters, and also, mystery solving requires a degree of predictability to know when patterns have been broken. And when you're driving squad cars into the mayor's office, (players laughing) being like, some things seem out of place around here! It's like, it could be-
(players laugh)
Trapp: The baseline reality is absolutely insane where it's like, hmm, something's wrong.
Siobhan: Right.
Brennan: So something-
Freddie: That's why I think your technique, as like just staying real simple-
Danielle: Yeah.
Freddie: Is working so effectively, right? (players laughing) It cuts through all the noise.
Siobhan: Punching your way through. Too many hijinks, not enough lowjinks.
Brennan: Yeah.
(players laughing)
Brennan: God, lowjinks is such a good, I want that to be the last name of a character so bad.
Freddie: Yeah.
Brennan: Ah, lowjinks.
Siobhan: Just a really sad, serious man.
Brennan: Yes.
Siobhan: No messing around.
Brennan: Exactly.
Trapp: This is it, this is totally unrelated, but you just saying that, every morning, I look at my shampoo bottle, and it says, like, there's just a shit ton of text on the back, but in bold, somewhere near the top, it says rich lather, and I go, that's an incredible name. Every morning I go, that's a great name for some stupid like billionaire.
Brennan: Good morning, Santa Barbara, I'm your host, Rich Lather. Yeah.
Alex: Oh wow.
Brennan: Oh, that's great.
(players laughing)
Freddie: Brennan, the topic of a lot of NPCs, can I ask you a question?
Brennan: Yeah, go for it.
Freddie: How do you, like, do you have like a rubric of like what, 'cause like, I feel like you're pretty accurate on the voices.
Hank: Yeah, you're pretty on-
Freddie: But it'll be someone like, we meet for three seconds in episode one, then we meet again, and it's like, you're right in that voice, like what is your, how do you?
Brennan: Sometimes I do actually go back and watch to see kind of what voice I-
Freddie: Oh, I see
Brennan: What voice I did.
Freddie: Yeah yeah yeah.
Brennan: I did that for, I forgot whether Leon Logic, who was- ended up being more like this sort of-
Freddie: Yeah, yeah.
Brennan: That that was his thing. But I, 'cause for a second I was like, I was like, oh, did I do that, or did I do something a little bit more like the Mayor of Townsville from Powerpuff Girls, who's like a little more in that sort of register, you know. But for the most part, it's just sort of filed away.
Freddie: Oh, wow.
Brennan: For the most part, it's just sorta filed away.
Freddie: In your memory palace of voices?
Brennan: This is the, oh, this is the only thing I do. (players laughing) It's just this. So if you're like, how do you do that? And it's like, I have one skill, and it's only one skill. (players laughing) So, don't ask me to do even one other kind of thing, you know?
Trapp: I'm glad I, that my existence on this planet happened to align with a time when Dungeons and Dragons could become a career, and-
(players laughing)
Brennan: Hey, you're not kidding. This is absolutely what it was gonna be, and nothing else. (players laughing) No, truly, speaking of incredible improv, oh my god, A. Tension's courtroom...
(players whooping) (Brennan stammering)
Siobhan: I was like, do I stand up? I feel like I wanna stand up.
(players laughing)
Brennan: Mm-hm. Unbelievable. Did you, now obviously, paralegals don't present in court-
Danielle: No.
Brennan: But that was like a perfect top-to-bottom, front-to-back, you fucking nailed that guy. It was fully silly to even roll about it after it was done, truly.
Danielle: So, a lot of what I would do is like, I would write a lot of, I mean, obviously, I would like take dictation, but I would be in a lot of like the documents, like demand letters, you know, settlement letters, or you know, proposals for settlements, or you know, mediation documents, whatever, motions, blah, blah, blah. And so, a lotta the times, the arguments for, that happen in court, a lotta those are laid out in those documents because the judge ain't gonna read it. And so, they're just not. (Brennan laughing) And so, you put together all these beautiful binders, you send it to the court, and they'll never read it. And so, a lot of those arguments like wound up, like wind up being that.
Siobhan: Uh-huh.
Danielle: I think just like being around it so much, like.
Siobhan: Yeah.
Alex: Wow.
Brennan: Absorbed through all, that's so incredible.
Trapp: Like, I did love, like, during ambition's speech, like, you were taking notes in that very sort of like lawyerly, or like debate club way.
Danielle: Yeah, (laughs) I did!
Freddie: Yeah yeah eah.
Trapp: He's making this point, he's making this point, so it'd be like, I'm gonna tear that apart. Well, that's just facetious, you know?
Danielle: I was, I was taking notes.
Siobhan: Ah a strawman argument, interesting.
Brennan: It was just so, it was so fun and wonderful to, again, like, in the metaphors of how all these things play out, the idea of the brain is experiencing a moment of confusion where the voice of ambition, which has been prevalent the entire time, suddenly is defeated by attention, of just being like, hey man, none of that shit you said is true! Like. (players laughing) Oh, a voice being like, now, if we just keep going, we'll achieve greatly, and when we achieve great- and you're like, no, you wo- look around, man, it's not working!
Hank: Yeah, it reminded me of the line, like, I don't know if it was the first episode where you said like, the brain isn't happy until I say it's happy, or whatever.
(players agreeing)
Hank: And it's like, and that is... never!
Brennan: Never!
Hank: Because you never get there.
Brennan: You never get there, absolutely.
Hank: Sorry, I'm sorry about (player laughing) the terrible news.
Danielle: I have to go.
Brennan: I feel bad for Alex, you keep saying stuff-
Alex: I keep learning-
Hank: That's not what! (players laughing) But Hank that's not what this town is telling me.
Siobhan: I've never seen anybody hate learning as much as you do.
Alex: Yeah.
Brennan: No, it's a very, it's very true where it's like, it's, but that's the thing is I, and that is something that I fully do, like, endorse and believe myself, which is just that ambition, it's not that ambition can't get you into situations that are better than other situations,
Hank: Mm-hm.
Brennan: But that instinct does not produce happiness. You have to, some, if you wanna have that be a part of your life, awesome. Hope you achieve great things, that's so fucking cool. But the happiness is gonna come from somewhere else, that instinct will never go, ah, you did enough, and now you get to feel good.
Danielle: Right, it's always gonna be you meet one goal, okay, what's the next thing, what's the next thing, what's the next thing? 'Cause that's always gonna be what drives, which is why, like, you have to do things like pay attention to the sweet girl at the coffee shop who smiles at you, and like things like that.
Hank: Right.
Danielle: You'd like have to build a whole other world around you, because if it's just you like chasing stuff, yeah, you're never like, and even if you became king of the world, you would be like, okay, but do we find another world?
Brennan: Yeah.
Danielle: Like it would still, or you would never be done.
Trapp: There's this-
Siobhan: Yeah, it's a self emptying jar. No filling that shit up.
Trapp: There's this concept. there's this concept called the hedonic treadmill, that describes exactly that, that is this idea that like, we're very good at resetting like what our baseline like happiness is, where you get something, and it makes you happy, and then you go, okay, but that thing that made me tremendously happy, as you continue to have it, it's like, well, that just becomes normal now. So now I need the new thing on top of that. And so, there's this idea that like, like ways to like really kinda keep yourself happy are with very small things-
Hank: You have to-
Trapp: That make you a little bit happy but every day, and let like-
Siobhan: Mm-hm.
Trapp: -and you like, and like, a good, so like, the counter example to that is like, a lotta people are like, oh, I'm gonna buy the nice house that's kinda far away, but it's like I'm gonna finally have that beautiful house I always wanted, and now their commute sucks. And then it's like, well, now you have a terrible commute that makes you miserable every day, and the house stops making you happy.
Hank: Yeah.
Trapp: And now you've just made yourself actually-
Hank: The opposite of the thing.
Trapp: Less happy because you have one thing that, one small annoyance that happens every day that actually makes you like more unhappy than the big thing.
Brennan and Alex: Wow
Freddie: On that note too, there was a class that a friend of mine took that was like the science and understanding of happiness, and it was like exactly that, and what they found, the other thing that you can spend on, if you have a bunch of money you're trying to deal with to maximize your happiness was experience.
Trapp: Mm.
Freddie: Like experiences-
Danielle: Ooh, yeah.
Freddie: Like meals, those sorts of things, because good memories of those things over time, when you look back at them, they get better, like that actually appreciates.
Trapp: Nostalgia's diner! (players laughing)
Freddie: Yeah, yeah. It's like some weird thing or weird vacation that you took is like appreciates in a way that a physical object doesn't, that's exactly what you're talking about.
Hank: Which is why-
Freddie: Yeah.
Hank: I gave, I just like greased that man's pockets to let me on the show.
Freddie: Ahh.
Siobhan: Damn!
Brennan: That's how you do it!
Hank: It's for the experiences.
Freddie: Yeah.
Brennan: I'm a light touch.
Siobhan: Brennan, gimme your fucking money.
(players laughing)
Hank: Actually, it wasn't money, it was all drugs.
Siobhan: Oh, that makes sense.
(players laughing)
Brennan: Famously a huge lover of narcotics. (players laugh)
Siobhan: Can I ask you quickly what Norrell Ojiccle's six siblings are called, or seven siblings?
Trapp: The Ojiccle family?
Siobhan: The Ojiccle-
Brennan: Oh, the Ojiccles?
Siobhan: Do you have names for them, or?
Hank: I can guess a few, I can guess a few.
Siobhan: 'Cause I was sitting here like-
Brennan: Yeah, wait, you guys guess.
Siobhan: Here is what I got, Physio.
Hank: Gotcha.
Brennan: Yeah.
Siobhan: Psycho.
Hank: Sure.
Brennan: Yep.
Siobhan: Theo?
Brennan: Yep.
Brennan: Ooh, ooh.
Hank: Oh.
Siobhan: Socio.
Brennan: Yep!
Siobhan: Anthropo.
Brennan: Anthropo, yep. (player laughs)
Alex: What?
Brennan: And Archeo.
Brennan: Yep.
Alex: What?
Freddie: Oh, wow.
Hank: He's just saying yes to all of them.
Freddie: He's just saying yes, he's just saying yes, he doesn't have any of those down!
Siobhan: You didn't write any of them, you just saw mine!
Brennan: Everyone stop, everyone stop, no, no, no, no, no, that's great! (players laughing) That's great.
Freddie: You got them all!
Brennan: Does anyone else want to guess more stuff about the world. (players laughing)
Freddie: Keep going!
Alex: Yeah, I was gonna ask if there's someone named Greta Grateful, or I don't know. (players laugh)
Brennan: Sure, (dictating) Greta Grate-
Trapp: Dream factory we could visit, or something. (players laughing)
Brennan: Always, speaking of things like grateful, we gotta talk about the scene with Justin and the key.
Danielle: Oh my god, heartbreaking.
Alex: It was terrifying. (players laugh)
Brennan: Yes, well, those are the interesting thing, 'cause I, 'cause as soon as you said that you made up Justin, like Justin Fication was, Alex was like, Conrad has a best friend that's a dog, which like, sweet little kid, urchin kid in a film noir thing, gotta have a pooch. And I, when you said justification, I was like, that's perfect, because I think, obviously, conscience and justification go hand in hand. However, justification is to me also such a terrifying conc- a lot like, you know, like, dog is man's best friend, but also, the idea of like a big German Shepherd, or some, like, some dog like prowling around, protecting a place, like, beware of dog, because that idea of justification is loyal to whatever concept it is partnered with. So, if you have this mind control key in Madam Loathing's hands, and it's like, find reasons to hate ourself, and that idea of like, the key turning, and suddenly this thing being like, (snarls) we're all bad. 'Cause it's just finding reasons, and it's, yeah, terrifying.
Danielle: It's like with Dan Fucks. Find reasons to touch the balls.
Brennan: Yes. (players laughing)
Siobhan: And why haven't- we gone to the balls yet?
Hank: But and sometimes it works!
Brennan: And why we gone to the balls yet?
Freddie: I love that stuff, by the way, there, like that, that sequence, 'cause you know it's feel-
Siobhan: Oh yeah.
Freddie: You feel it in he room, that's something-
Hank: That is so.
Freddie: I think it's also something that's very unique to, like tabletop storytelling-
Brennan: Yeah.
Freddie: Because it's like, you know, everyone knows that it's like, oh, this is happening like in the moment. Like, it feels like you're on the razor's edge of this dramatic scene, which like, I think you know, like, improv is very, comedy you get all the time, but like drama, these sort of high stakes dramas is rare.
Siobhan: Right, I mean, talk about the dice telling the story as well.
Freddie: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Siobhan: And also like-
Freddie: Yeah, didn't-
Siobhan: And the only person who actually could make-
Freddie: Right.
Siobhan: Justin be back in himself was his best friend.
Alex: Yeah, and I really was just like, as a player, I was like, I don't know, I'm shutting down, what do you want me to do? Can they take care of it?
(players laughing)
Hank: Yeah.
Brennan: That was great, yeah, and Fix and Hunch
Hank: And Hunch is like, I love you!
Brennan: Yeah. (players laughing)
Hank: You're my best friend!
Brennan: They're like jumping on this horrifying dog who's like snarling and slathering at the mouth. And the idea of then, oh, I mean, that one funny thing too, 'cause I never know how you guys are gonna split up, but I knew what was gonna happen at Madam Loathing's if Justin ended up there. And,
(players "oh")
Brennan: -and so, I was like, god, if Conrad shows up. And I was like, if Conrad shows up, and Justin turns, what the fuck's gonna happen? And then, then when both Hunch and The Fix were going with him, I was like, thank god. I was like, just like, the toughest and strongest characters being in the room with, at that point the most physical-
Trapp: But I don't need my gun.
(players laughing)
Brennan: Oh yeah.
Freddie: Yeah, yeah.
Trapp: What could possibly happen in at Madam Loathing's?
Freddie: Yeah, it was like famous last words in this party.
Alex: We really thought we were just talking to a little reptile.
Brennan: Hey, a little Ronnie Reptile!
Hank: It was just gonna be a-
Freddie: We were ready for-
Hank: Another clue!
Freddie: Eight facts.
Siobhan: I actually was like three of them to talk to that one little kid, it seemed like so much.
Hank: Oh yeah, well, I'm glad you came along, Hunch, thanks.
Alex: Yeah.
Hank: I was like, I don't think we need you.
(players laughing)
Trapp: Well, it was like, I think, for me it was like, I think like, like, that has been like, the most like, clue-like clue, and so it feels like, oh, it feels like, like Hunch is gonna go where it feels like the most mystery is-
Freddie: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Trapp: Where it's just like, oh, there's just stuff to be resolved here.
Freddie: Yeah.
Trapp: But I truly thought it was like, we'll breeze in here, Ronnie's gonna tell us something about neurological, and then we'll cruise on down to Motor City.
Hank: I'll find a picture! (players laughing) On the, yeah-
Brennan: And lo and behold, you discover the villain of the fucking, yeah.
Freddie: Yeah.
Brennan: And again, another huge role, I feel like, is the role that happens where we, there was, I think one of you guys rolled correctly so that Madam Loathing only got the first half of where the possible switch- 'Cause if she had gotten both, then you would have no idea which one she was headed to, right?
Alex: Yeah.
Brennan: So, that's a huge one. But then the, this incredible 15 sneak check, and as you say, like, I'm reaching out for the copper behind me, and there's just something in my head where I was just like, you've spent this whole life collecting these treasures, and,
Freddie: And he paused for a second to really-
Hank: Yeah, yeah.
Freddie: It was so intense.
Brennan: I was just, yeah, and I also, 'cause I was like, I was like there was this thing where I was like, oh, like, Anastasia's not with you, and Imelda's not with you, but I was like, but you have this connection to the ice skates over anyone else. And I was like, and there's this treasure, and the guy who had stole it, like, Mark, who had stolen them has now, you know, is in jail. (claps hands) And I was just like, yeah, there's like, and the misting, and the weird eye stuff, just the fact of you reach into the shadows, and producing them, and being like, and that becomes a brand new key that Mentopolis has never seen before.
Siobhan: Yeah, it's that thing of like, oh, I guess I gave myself a gift two episodes ago where when Conrad punched Fight in the stomach, and the key came out even though the key had been...
Brennan: Given away.
Siobhan: Given away.
Freddie: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Brennan: Yes.
Siobhan: Now we know in this world that if something is important enough, it can just kind of appear, and if it's something important enough to that concept.
Brennan: Yes, and I think too there was a big discovery as well of like the love you had for Justin in that moment. And it being like, 'cause conscience is a very intense concept, but fundamentally, it's like what is at the root of a person's conscience? And it seems like in this case it was, you know, love, or at least at the very least like, the friendship between like Justin and Conrad.
Alex: Well, I wanna be fully transparent that there wa- the reaching, I was reaching for the copper pipe.
(players laughing)
Hank: I'm gonna hit that dog!
Brennan: I'm gonna fucking kick the shit outta this dog! Yeah, good point, good point.
(players talking over each other)
Alex: Conscience is complicated.
Brennan: Conscience is, (players laugh) conscience is very complicated, yeah, that's true.
Trapp: It does feel right though that like, you know, an underdeveloped conscience can be like run roughshod over by any other like aspect of your personality, but also a strong developed conscience can rein in any other like aspect of your personality as well.
Brennan: Yeah, and I think the idea too of that, of specifically like, and how hurt Conrad was by what Justin was saying when it was like, you know, basically turned by Madam Loathing, and just being so frozen for a moment, and then just being like, well, you're my best friend, I love you, and then (clicks) the little key. Speaking of love, Imelda Pulse and H.V. Lance! (players cheering)
Trapp: So happy for you.
Siobhan: It'll last, it'll definitely last.
(players laughing)
Brennan: I cannot imagine that, I had no ability to predict that that was gonna happen.
Siobhan: Me neither, I had no idea.
Brennan: Talk about impulse, that's the most impulsive thing where it's like, well, that's a relationship I could not have predicted.
Siobhan: But again, like tropes, tropes, tropes, like it-
Brennan: Yeah.
Siobhan: I feel like one of the things that was so weird, like watching with a real eye for the tropes of these movies is men and women in these movies say they love each other immediately.
Freddie: Oh yeah, yeah.
Siobhan: They kiss one time, and they're like, I thought you loved me, so, (Freddie laughing) What?
Brennan: The fuck is going on?
Siobhan: You've known each other for six hours.
Brennan: Yeah.
Trapp: Slap! (players laughing) It's crazy.
Brennan: I loved you turning the key, getting him to grab the stuff, and then shooting the thing immediately. Like, get rid of this, we don't need more of these running around.
Hank: This is so dangerous.
Brennan: Blam.
Alex: Yeah.
Brennan: That's dangerous.
Alex: That was like the smoothest, like, also sexiest episode so far, I think.
Brennan: Ooh, oh, (players laughing) yeah, we gotta talk, we had sexual tension between Lance and Imelda. Sexual tension between Fanny and Anastasia.
Hank: Mm, was that what that was? (players laughing) I like my women like I like my vodka, room temperature?
Brennan: Room temperature. (players laughing)
Freddie: That's a line for the ages.
Brennan: And truly chilling, finding Fawn, and Flight. Finding Stacy Fakename there at the end, the actual, the real Stacy Fakename.
Trapp: The one who's wanted.
Brennan: The one who's wanted. (players laugh)
Hank: The one who's been hiding.
Danielle: So many crimes.
Freddie: By the way, it cracked me up, the drawing the gun immediate- It's like, I'm being stolen from, I was like, well, I have this, let's just be perfect, (players laugh) like, everyone had forgotten, like, oh yeah, of course!
Brennan: I got a gun, don't steal from me.
Danielle: I gotta follow Chekhov's rules, baby!
(players laughing)
Brennan: And then we have the moment between Don Avaricci and Dan Fucks.
Freddie: Yeah, we're not different, you and I.
Brennan: Not so different, you and I, we can make this a real pleasurable mind to be in, you know. But you gotta get Conrad Schintz. Conrad'd never let ya sell those secrets to the next highest bidder.
Alex: I don't know, it doesn't sound like Dan is saying he hates me with the same fervor as before.
(players laughing)
Freddie: Give it a little time, don't you worry.
(players laughing)
Trapp: Well, what is kind of a, 'cause like, thinking back to also the police station scene in the previous episode is, in a weird way, both like, Justin and Avaricci have both sorta made this appeal to Dan that's like, pleasure can be enhanced, like paired up with either conscience, or with greed. And it's like, what is, like, what is the greater version of yourself-
Freddie: Yeah.
Trapp: By pairing up with these like sort of light side or dark side, you know?
Freddie: And I think that for me, the timing of it has to be only after we've made the decision to like, you know, get the papers again, right? Like, in the the real guy, right? And I think, 'cause I think that it's, to me that like, it would've gone a different way if we- if it wasn't, if you hadn't said, like, oh, this is the first time, right, like, and having that realization, I think, kind of flood around, I think was, is story-wise important.
Brennan: Yeah.
Freddie: Like being a nexus point to sort of go from.
Brennan: Hell yeah, I agree. Well, betrayal, possibility of death, destruction, mayhem, and Madam Loathing towering through the dark streets of Mentopolis as we converge for the last time on Oblongata Station. We'll see you next week on another episode of Dimension 20: Mentopolis. Tune in for the thrilling finale! Myeah, see?
(players "myeah, see?"ing over each other)
Hank: You guys are so good at that.
(players laughing) (Freddie claps hands)
