2025 IOM Kapiti Classic

6th and 7th September 2025

Information to Competitors

On behalf of the NZRYA, NZLIOMNCA and the Kapiti Radio Yacht Club, welcome to this event and thank you for entering.  Should there be any changes to this information, entered skippers will be alerted by email prior to the event or at the briefing prior to the beginning of racing.

Travel and Accommodation

The entrance to the lake is at the southern end of Te Roto Road, Otaki, about 75km north from central Wellington. Drive time from Wellington airport on the new Transmission Gully expressway is approximately 1 hour.

Otaki village is 10 - 15 minutes drive from the lake entrance, Waikanae a further 15 minutes south and Paraparaumu 20 minutes south. These areas offer a variety of accommodation options at a range of prices all within a reasonable travelling distance from the lake. Most advertise though one or more of the following sites. Use “Kapiti Coast” as a search option to return the widest range of local accommodation:

Lunches

Lunch will not be provided, so competitors need to self-cater.  There is a supermarket close by in Otaki on Old SH1 and a number of food outlets within the shopping area.  Bottled water, tea and coffee will be available at the venue.

Winstones Lake

The lake is situated inside a working quarry. Quarry operations are usually Monday to Friday, however weekend operations involving heavy machinery do occur from time to time.  The road into the quarry area will be blocked off with road cones to indicate the “no-go” area.

The lake is a disused gravel pit now filled with fresh ground water from the surrounding river plain. Be aware that the shoreline is gravel underfoot which can be unstable on steeper slopes and in places the lake is very deep close to shore.

Launching and retrieving may be performed safely from the jetty. When launching or retrieving from the shore, skippers should take extra care. Jetty access to the water is dry, but gumboots may be preferred if using the shoreline.

Lake Access and Parking

For the duration of the event, we have been granted access off Te Roto Road across private land.  Follow the yellow KRYC signs from the end of Te Roto Road.  Much of the access is along a shared walking/cycling path.  Please respect private land and other path users, keeping speeds to no more than 20kph.  Do not enter, or exit via the main quarry entrance off Old SH1 as that gate will be locked.

There is ample day parking for all vehicles at the venue. Overnight parking for self contained vehicles is available in the area of the club container.

A toilet is located at the rear of the club container.  Public toilets are also available at the far eastern end of the lake.

Keep Our Waterways Pest Free

The quality of our lake water is pristine and we’d like to keep it that way. Some of New Zealand’s fresh waterways have been contaminated with pests. Once established, they can spoil the recreational use of a waterway, and it’s appearance. We ask that all skippers follow the MPI recommended practice prior to travelling:

Registration and Measuring

Registration and measuring will be available at the sailing venue on Friday morning prior to the briefing.  Please present your boat and sails in dry condition.  Don’t forget to bring your boat Certificate and PN Certificate if applicable.

Practice Session

We are not able to run a practice session on Friday during quarry operating hours.  Skippers may launch boats on Friday after 1630.  Boats can be launched at any time before and after racing on competition days.

Interim and Final Results

We will post interim results on the venue noticeboard and the Race Results page of the KRYC website.  End of day results will also be sent to the NZRYA webmaster.

Social Stuff

A casual pizza and drinks catch-up is planned for Friday evening. The venue is Long Beach Tavern, situated at 40 Tutere Street, Waikanae Beach. We have booked for 1730.

Weather permitting, we will fire up the BBQ for a sausage sizzle after racing on Sunday afternoon.
