POST-RHINOPLASTY SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS

***PLEASE NOTE***These instructions are to be followed as a general guideline.

Any change to these instructions will be discussed with you by Dr. Petersen

  1. FILL PRESCRIPTIONS specified by Dr. Petersen or his staff. Make sure you inform Dr. Petersen of any prescriptions or over the counter medicines that are taking to prevent interactions.

  1. Do not take any aspirin or aspirin like medications (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, etc.) for two weeks post-op.  These drugs may increase bleeding. If you have any questions concerning any medications, contact Dr. Petersen.

  1. Smoking causes wound healing problems.  It can cause significant breakdown of the incisions and also a loss of skin.  It is REQUIRED that the patients stop smoking 6 weeks following any surgery.

  1. All dressings should be left in place until post-operative examination or as directed by Dr. Petersen.

  1. The splint will be removed in 5-7 days.  These will be removed at a follow up visit at Dr. Petersen’s office.  Splints should be left in place, if any should come loose, adhesive tape can be used to reattach them in position.

  1. Application of ice packs to the face and nasal area can help for the first 24-48 hours post-op.  This may help to reduce swelling, bleeding, and discomfort. You should ice for 20 min. on and 30 min. off.

  1. Have someone assist you with ambulating and going to the bathroom for 1-2 days post op. This will reduce any risk of injury if dizziness or fainting should occur. We encourage frequent ambulation and moving of the legs while in bed to reduce blood clots (DVT’s).  For the first few days you will need to get up every 2 hours and walk around your home for about 5-10 min. including the first night after surgery. If given leg pumps, You are to have them on your legs AT ALL TIMES.

  1. Sponge bathing is permitted for the first 5 days, after that time showers will be permitted.

  1. Should active bleeding occur, the patient should immediately place themselves in a reclined position and apply ice and pressure to the nasal area.  This bleeding usually stops within 10-15 minutes but may re-occur intermittently.  Should there be any problems with breathing or persistent bleeding, Dr. Petersen should be notified immediately.

  1. A humidifier should be used to decrease the dryness of the air that the patient is breathing through their mouth, and also enhance the comfort of the patient.

  1. The patient should keep their head elevated on at least two pillows for the first 48-72 hours following the surgery.  This will help to reduce swelling and bruising.

  1. If you were not given an appointment time, please call the office next day to schedule your follow-up visit.

  1. The patient is not to blow their nose while the packs are still in position.  The nose should not be blown with any force during the first two weeks after the surgery.

  1. If for any reason the patient becomes unresponsive, delirious, or you feel something is seriously wrong and needs immediate attention, call 911 and/or go immediately to the nearest ER.

***PLEASE NOTE***

During the 48 hours following surgery, the swelling will become more apparent, and there may actually be some differences of swelling on the two different sides of the nose.  Bruising is extremely common during this period and will become more apparent during the 48 hours post-operatively.  These post-operative conditions will gradually disappear.  Pain is usually noted but is usually tolerated with pain medication.  It is common to see more swelling 2 days after the surgery than the day of the surgery.
