Unit 1 - Exploring Fine Art

Week 1 - Alternative Compositions

Due Date: Fall - 8/24 | Spring - 1/11
Assignment 1 - Not the Rule of Thirds
Description - Students will compose images using alternatives to the Rule of Thirds.

Week 2 - Finding Abstract Beauty

Due Date: Fall - 8/31 | Spring - 1/18
Assignment 2 - Fine Art Abstracts
Description - Students will create abstract compositions from everyday items/locations/etc.

Week 3 - Taking Portraits to the Next Level

Due Date: Fall - 9/7 | Spring - 1/25
Assignment 3 - Fine Art Portraits
Description - Students will take their portraiture to the next level by creating fine art portraits.

Week 4 - Exploring Personal Artistry

Due Date: Fall - 9/14 | Spring - 2/1
Assignment 4 - Personal Project
Description - Students will create a short series of photos according to: A) a theme listed in the assignment, B) an assignment from a different level of Photography, or C) or their own theme that has been submitted and approved by the photography instructor.    

Week 5 - Photographing Strangers

Due Date: Fall - 9/21 | Spring - 2/8
Assignment 5 - 50 @ 50mm
Description - Probably the most challenging assignment of the semester, students are to create portraits of 50 strangers using only a 50mm equivalent prime lens in ambient light (no flash).

Week 6 - Learning to Analyze and Replicate Lighting Setups

Due Date: Fall - 9/28 | Spring - 2/15
Assignment 6 - Deconstructing Light
Description - Students will analyze the lighting in several photos of their choice and then attempt to recreate them.

Week 7 - Shooting at the Edge of Light

Due Date: Fall - 10/5 | Spring - 2/22
Assignment 7 - Sunset/Sunrise Photography under construction
Description - Students will capture landscapes at the beginning and the end of the day, at the edge of light and dark, the beginning and the end of the golden hour.

Week 8 - Shooting in Tough Light

Due Date: Fall - 10/12 | Spring - 3/1
Assignment 8 - Low-Light Event Coverage
Description - Students will photograph a low-light event of their choice, such as a play or concert.

Week 9 - Shooting Difficult Materials

Due Date: Fall - 10/19 | Spring - 3/8
Assignment 9 - Metal & Glass Photography
Description - Students will create product photos of two of the most notoriously difficult materials to shoot, reflective metal and glass.

Week 10 - Long Exposure Advanced Techniques

Due Date: Fall - 10/26 | Spring - 3/15
Assignment 10 - Still life Light Paintings
Description - Students will use advanced light painting techniques to create still life light paintings.    

Week 11 - Blending Still Photography and Videography

Due Date: Fall - 11/2 | Spring - 3/22
Assignment 11 - Cinemagraphs
Description - Students will combine video and still images to create hybrid “cinemagraphs.”

Week 12 - Creating Motion from Still Photography

Due Date: Fall - 11/9 | Spring - 3/29
Assignment 12 - Hyperlapse
Description - Students will combine a series of still images into a motion graphic.

Week 13 - Real-World Portrait Work

Due Date: Fall - 11/16 | Spring - 4/12 (4/1-4/5 is spring break)
Assignment 13 - Senior Portrait Session
Description - Students will complete an on-location senior portrait session.

Unit 4 -

Week 14 - Themed Portrait Shooting

Due Date: Fall - 11/23 | Spring - 4/19
Assignment 14 - Portraits w/ Props
Description - Students will complete an on-location portrait session where a prop (or props) are seamlessly integrated and feature prominently in the photos.

Week 15 - More Real-World Portrait Work

Due Date: Fall - 11/30 | Spring - 4/26
Assignment 15 - Family Portrait Session
Description - Students will complete an on-location family portrait session.

Week 16 - Photographing Animals

Due Date: Fall - 12/7 | Spring - 5/3
Assignment 16 - Pet Portraits or Wildlife Photography
Description - Students will create either pet portraits or practice wildlife photography.

Week 17 - Expressing Yourself

Due Date: Fall - 12/14 | Spring - 5/10
Assignment 17 - Open Project II
Description - Students will create a short series of photos according to: A) a theme listed in the assignment, B) an assignment from a different level of Photography, or C) or their own theme that has been submitted and approved by the photography instructor.

Week 18 - Shooting According to a Theme

Description - Students will create a short series of photos that all adhere to a singular theme.

Assignment 21 - Honors Credit
Description - If a student successfully completes all previous assignments, they can attempt to upgrade the credit the receive from this class from a CP weighting to an Honors weighting by successfully completing and submitting two additional assignments. Honors credit is subject to approval by both the photography instructor and the Registrar.
