“Deaf Employees During COV19: Strategies for Success” Video

Video Description:

A Chicanx person wearing a short-sleeved black shirt stands in front of a white background, is using sign language.

Speech:

Barriers and challenges for deaf employees of all trades have been identified even before COVID-19 came along. With the pandemic, they became magnified.

We recently hosted live panels where panelists shared with us how they remain resilient and find creative solutions to advocate for themselves while coping with major changes in their lifestyles.

From my perspective as moderator, I noticed how experiences and solutions are often a

combination of different: as being flexible with yourself and your schedule, using technology, and an optimistic attitude.

Nearly all panelists shared that they have seen an increase in productivity, but also shared sentiments of how exhausted they are.

Panelist DT Bruno reminded us that it is not “business as usual” to be working through a global pandemic and it’s not an easy thing to do.

We did some audience polling at both panels and many shared they needed changes in

accommodations when working at home or onsite.

Video Description:

Text appears: “More than 73% needed changes in accommodations.”

Speech:

Some said their employers did not provide these accommodations. If you want to learn more about the Deaf at Work live panels, check out the summary on NDC website.

The first reads “IDEAs that Work” with an arrow drawing a circle from “IDEAs” to “Work” and the words “U.S. Office of Special Education Programs”. The second logo shows a red-and-blue star with text next to it that reads “TA&D”. The third logo shows a blue circle around a tree. In the blue circle are the words “U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.”
