Extended Step Outline - Music Video Narrative
Song Title | Band | Genre | |
Rango | Catfish and the bottle men | Indie rock
Characters in narrative - will performers appear? | Singer (Jack Reed), will perform in the narrative as it makes sense, this will allow us to add impact through the lyrics as they can be sung in the narrative as well . We need a girl to play the role of a manipulating woman who is portrayed metaphorically through a voodoo doll idea. This illustrative performance we believe to be appropriate.
Structure - key moments - doesn’t have to be in that order or have all of these elements | We need Jack to be walking to a location (bunker at Pleinmont), as he goes there he gets progressively more injured. This will be portrayed through the voodoo doll as the girl progressively stabs it and throws it around. In this case Jack is the voodoo doll so as he gets closer to the location he becomes more injured which relates to the lyrics and themes of the song, which are coming back to a manipulative girl. We need Jack to hurt his chest and leg and we need him to be thrown around. As he gets closer he will start running and when he arrives he will walk into the bunker. He will pick up a guitar and walk in which relates to the performance aspect but once he is inside the voodoo doll will be lying on the floor but the girl wont be there. We will then have a longshot of the bunker and cut to black.
Type of narrative | Illustrative : The narrative and performance are very close together. The lyrical content of the song is heavily implied through the narrative performance but there is also a correlation to the performance aspect.
Conflict - subject matters, themes - binary oppositions | Manipulative woman/Relationship, coming back to something unhealthy
Ending / central question | Episodic and linear
Key MES - costumes, props, colours etc | Performer in same clothes as performance shoot. Guitar prop for end (walk in bunker), Doll of some description for narrative purpose (Voodoo?), Smoke grenade potential;ly for the end shot in the bunker for dramatic effect (could be done in post).
Locations | Pleinmont area
Scene description: Jack walks back to the girl who is shown to be in the bunker. He progressively gets closer and gets more injured through the voodoo doll. The implications are that the girl is injuring him. The fact that she is not physically hurting him reflects the lyrics of the girl manipulating you to make mistakes. As Jack reaches his destination he finds her not there anymore, implying the end of the road or perhaps that he has moved on. |
